This 2 hour talk is basically the essential primer/guide to product management. I have never seen a single deck/resource be nearly as comprehensive. This is so incredibly essential, I think anyone who is even remotely connected to building products should sit down and at least flip through the slides, if not watch the whole thing.

It took me 10 years of working on product of all kinds (web, desktop, mobile, consumer, enterprise) in all kinds of roles (engineer, designer, PM) to come to understand the concepts explained in this deck in 2 hours.

This is my favorite slide out of this whole thing. There's a lot more to designing products than the visual aspect. There's much more, and it's all connected.

Dave McClure's fbFund is bringing together some seriously valuable startup knowhow and resources.

Review this chart to help you determine the best Sleep Discipline for you. Notice that the more naps you take during the day, the less sleep you will need at night. Conversely, the shorter your core sleep, the more strictly you will need to follow your schedule. The less Total Sleep you get, the more severe the sleep deprivation in the adjustment phase will be, however the more sever the sleep dep., the quicker your body will adjust to the Discipline.

# 20 min Naps Core Sleep (hrs) Total Sleep (hrs) Net Benefit (vs 8 hrs) Nap Sched. Flexibility Nickname
0 8 8 0 n/a Monophasic
1 6 6.3 1.7 +/-3 hr Siesta
2 4.5 5.2 2.8 +/-2 hr Everyman
3 3 4 4 +/-1 hr Everyman
4 or 5 1.5 2.8 5.2 +/-30 min Everyman
6 0 2 6 +/-30 min Uberman

This is actually fascinating. I've never seen so concisely laid out with the actual options you could go with.

Ten people are bidding on a stock at 90, while 100 people are offering to sell it at 91. What price is the next trade?

Interviewees often say that since there are more sellers than buyers, the sellers get to determine the price. That logic usually yields an answer between 90 and 91. That's exactly wrong. "They're not thinking about what's going on in the real world," says Rubczyk. In reality, when there are more sellers than buyers, the price falls. So the next sale would probably be in the mid- to low 80s.

Gotta stay up? Here's what has been working for me the past few weeks:

  • Push ups. No really, do 10 pushups and really get the blood pumping.
  • Turn up some angry Alice in Chains or Nirvana. Even 30 seconds of headbanging will wake you right up. Draw on that long forgotten and locked away teenage angst from the early 90's.
  • Chug a red bull. Sugarfree ideally. Fast and effective.
  • Sit up straight. Slouching in your chair will make you lazy and you'll end up watching hulu.com for half an hour. Sit up straight, and your whole mindset will be different.
  • Don't forget to eat. Eating is the #1 driver for energy. Have some nuts or wasabi peas around. Eat them a handful an hour.
  • Drink more water. If you're thirsty at all, it will affect your ability to think.
  • Take a nap. If all else fails, take a 20 minute nap. It's easy to be a zombie and waste time, so know when to say when.

Whether you need to cram for your next final, watch one more hour of Gossip Girl, or code to obliterate your competitors, I've found these simple actions can go a long way. You got any tips to share? Would love to hear it in the comments!
