This weekend's Better World by Design conference has been organized by Brown and RISD second year in a row. It was an inspiring weekend where students and professionals of all fields came together to inspire one another. More than 500 people showed up in Providence, Rhode Island with a mindset that there is a movement happening in the world, a movement in which creative people from all walks of life see the opportunity to change the world for the better. Designers, architects, engineers, artist, journalists, researchers, entrepreneurs and educators saw eye to eye in the urgency of the world's problems and that we didn't have to wait for the government to lead but to have grassroot organizations, non-profits and forward thinking companies to lead the way from bottom up. A couple of highlights from '09 Better World conference:
Jan Chipchase, Nokia, showing us the importance of immersing oneself into a culture and understanding people as who they are. Spending most of his time traveling and research, he have discovered fascinating things about cultures around the world. |
Emeka Okafor, TED, who inspired us with his formation of TED Africa and the Maker's Faire Africa, that brought together the untapped creatives and potential that the continent possesses. |
Teddy Cruz, architect and professor, who explored the Urban osmosis taking place between the American-Mexican border in San Diego, where the movement of materials, houses, urban practices provides different challenges and opportunity culturally. |
Jaime Lerner, architect, urban planner and former mayor of Curitiba, showcased the impact of a good transportation system that transformed Curitiba. |
Emily Pilloton, Project H design, sharing with us how to make a better world by applying product design and creative approaches. |
William Drenttel, Winterhouse and Design Observer, outlined the future for designers and how we have and will continue to shape and change the future in an exponential way. |
Kigge Hvid, INDEX:, spoke about her commitment in promoting the value of design throughout the world. |
John Maeda, RISD, talked about the importance of creative thinking and the power of art and design, where he talked about the value of having Brown and RISD students put together such a powerful and world changing conference. |
