The Japanese Music Program at YIS was established in 2003 and is the only English language based in-class curriculum and certified Japanese music education program in the world. The program offers an eclectic musical education in Japanese music theory, music history, music composition as well as instruction on several Japanese musical instruments, including the 13-string koto, 17-string bass koto, shamisen and the shime-daiko. Courses begin in Grade 4 and continue through the Middle School where students can focus more intensely on their respective instruments. In high school, students continuing in the program may enhance their studies by pursuing a “Junshihan” Japanese music teaching certificate. In 2011, YIS will have the first ever IB music students completing their diploma performing on a Japanese musical instrument. Throughout the year there are many performance opportunities in various settings, including local temples and concert halls, as well as other special events and concert tours in Japan and overseas.
