The BBC and MIcrosoft aren't exactly seeing eye-to-eye at the moment, with the British broadcaster unhappy with the way Microsoft charges users for much its online content.

The dispute is centred around BBC's iPlayer, a service that allows people in the UK to watch BBC programs from their computer, PS3 or Wii. There were also plans to include the iPlayer on the Xbox 360, but because Microsoft insisted on restricting access to the player to paying, Gold subscribers, the BBC are withholding it.

Why? Because the BBC can't charge the British public for access to BBC programs, as use of the iPlayer is already covered under the TV license fee the Brits have to pay (Americans may wish to read this before continuing).

"Microsoft only wants to offer its users access to platforms it can charge for as this is the model it is pursuing" a BBC source told The Telegraph.

"This does not fit with the BBC's model and Microsoft will not budge at the moment. It is really frustrating for those involved on the BBC side who want to make sure iPlayer is rolled out on as many popular entertainment platforms as possible".

A more subdued, official statement from the BBC reads "BBC iPlayer has been extremely successful on PS3 and we recently re-launched on Nintendo Wii, from which the public response has been fantastic. People clearly want the BBC iPlayer on their gaming consoles, and we don't think Xbox users are any different, so we've had discussions with Microsoft about bringing the service to the platform."

Last week Microsoft launched their Xbox Live platform - integrating the Xbox consoles to social networks like Facebook, Twitter and the streaming music community Last.FM.

Now Last.fm is indicating that they added an extra million users via Xbox Live.

Wow!

I'm not sure how the revenue streams are going in this partnership, but an extra million users will end up generating both extra revenues and extra costs.

The growth numbers, calculated by Mashable are amazing, if true:

In a week - 1 million added users boils down to 300 new users per minute last week. 120 million minutes of music streamed from Last.FM over the consoles. All in adding 5% of the total of 20 million users Xbox Live users that is out there. Now that is potential!

Now all we have to do is integrating all the other social networks to all the other devices. Starting today!

They're really freaking annoying on Xbox Live. I swear, they curse like sailors, make a symphony of irritating noises and call anyone and anything "gay" for apparently no reason.
Worse yet? They absolutely slaughter me in Modern Warfare 2. How ultimately humiliating. And, this is supposed to be fun.

Clever idea this. Get the early adopters going crazy for it which in turn empowers them to become advocates for the brand and at the same time extends the reach to places Microsoft may not be able to touch.

This whole "social web" thing is crazy. I've just picked things that are different enough from each other to serve different purposes, and I've already stacked up 9.

I even have a social site to keep up with my social sites. This is ridiculous.
