I remain a little nonplussed at the news of Volkswagen buying a stake in Suzuki. Just as they're on the verging of completing an inexplicably complicated deal with Porsche (don't mention the takeover, I did it once but I think I got away with it...besides, I think VW won) they blindside us with this little Monopoly manoeuvre. Has no-one told them there's a recession on? Did they land on Free Parking whilst I was in the toilet?

I have a theory they were after a different sort of cappuccino maker. So, they have connections to car sales in Japan and India, but are VW really that desperate to climb the rankings? They're already the biggest car seller in China - maybe this deal is a shot across the bows of Renault-Nissan, poised to take over the world with their cheap cars from Dacia.

Quite where Suzuki will fit into the Volkswagen family is another matter altogether - perhaps VW have a taste for dodgy-looking 4x4s now they've got the Cayenne amongst the relations.

The full story (as it is) is on the Car magazine website - but the VW Polo? I don't always understand the European Car Of The Year judges - are they all so divided that a conservative 3rd or 4th choice steals through for the win? Personally I think the iQ or the Yeti or even the C3 Picasso should have got it - Polo for EU President?

Follow the link to Car online. I can't get my head round this Porsche/VW business, but Herr Kacher certainly helps...

I've posted on this before but it is so good I'm going to share it again. The idea that you can use fun to influence people is fantastic. Think of the possibilities for brands and other organisations in getting people to use the stairs, be more responsible with waste etc?

It's also a first-rate piece of communications from VW as it engages consumers in a way that is completely on-brand without having to push any commercial message.

Less selling, more fun!

...and it is telling you to buy a new car. ;-)

Not sure if this is legal... But I certainly appreciate the idea: DDB, Berlin lets people see exactly how far the money in their pockets could get them in a new VW Golf BlueMotion.
