kahunka-improve-eyesight-naturallyHow to Improve Your Eyesight Naturally with an Eye Wash Cup

In this article I’m going to share with what I feel is an amazing way to improve your eyesight naturally with an eye wash cup and a dash of cayenne pepper. It may just offer you a chance at better eyesight without the need for glasses.

This simple little centuries-old trick has been known to improve all types of eye problems, the procedure is amazingly simple and just makes sense.

Let me explain.

One day in early 2009 I went to the kitchen and grabbed my bottle of super resveratrol to read the ingredients.

To my astonishment the tiny words on the label were blurry and as much as I tried, I could not focus on them.

I had noticed recently that it took a little more effort to focus on smaller print but this time I was concerned after all this year I would turn 43, a time in one's life when we should expect steady deterioration of our bodies, right? Fortunately, I don't buy into this popular myth.

Having experienced a lifetime of perfect vision I never really thought about my eyes which goes without saying sometimes we don’t appreciate the gifts we have, until they’re gone.

Because I take a proactive approach to health I immediately dove into researching eye problems and their remedies.

It’s scary when you start researching an ailment because you discover just how many things can go wrong with the human body, conditions with names I couldn’t even begin to pronounce.

Not surprisingly, none of the mainstream medical sites offered any information of much value to someone like me searching for a way to improve my blurred vision aside from recommending a visit to the local optometrist which I wasn’t quite ready to do just yet.

Then in the midst of one of my searches the words “eye bath” on a site that sold antique "eye cups" caught my eye which ultimately led to my discovering a cure for my blurry vision.

Yes I said cure.

I had blurry vision and eye bathing completely restored my sight and while it may or may not help you, here is what I discovered.

Imagine for a moment what your eyes are potentially subjected to on any given day:

  • Pollen
  • Dust
  • Pet dander
  • Car exhaust and pollutants of all kinds
  • Bacteria
  • Viruses
  • Microscopic particulates of all kinds

Unless you cry all the time and your tears flow often, how do expect that all of these pollutants are removed from your eyes?

The simple answer is that they are not.

We practice good oral hygiene every day brushing and flossing our teeth so why not practice good eye hygiene?

Come to find out that is exactly what people used to do before the invention of antibiotics and eye drops which unfortunately cannot and do not achieve the same outcome when it comes to keeping eyes healthy.

While eye baths and eyecups can be traced all the way back to the Jin Dynasty in China, from what I’ve learned the West discovered eye bathing as far back as the 16th century.

In the early twentieth century Wyeth Laboratories of Philadelphia made and sold "eye bath kits" that contained eyewash solution and a glass eye wash cup.

Eye bathing was very popular because it worked.

So popular in fact that fortunately there is an abundant supply of antique eye wash cups available for sale online left over from an area when prevention was preferred over treatment.

What would happen if you bathed your eyes daily in a natural solution that provided nutrients, cleaned, soothed, cooled and increased circulation to them?

Your eyes would become healthier, naturally.

Eye bathing is just what it sounds like. You bathe your eyes in a nourishing, cleansing solution that helps remove contaminants and increase the circulation to your eyes.

This can be done by placing your face into a bowel of solution and opening your eyes just like you do when swimming in a river or a lake.

The face-in-bowel method uses a lot of solution so a more practical way is to put the solution into a tiny cup that is shaped to fit tightly into your eye socket so that it makes a tight seal.

Lean your head back allowing the solution to cover your eye and then you open it looking up, down and then side to side.

I do this anywhere from 30 seconds to a minute at a time and then switch eyes.

eye-brightThere are many different solutions you can use for eye bathing the one I chose is made by Dr. Schulze and contains cayenne pepper which helps stimulate circulation.  After just a few days eye bathing my sight returned to normal.

If you decide to try eye bathing buy one of the old antique glass eye cups instead of the new plastic kind simply because they are easy to clean and there is no issue with the possibility of chemicals leaching from the plastic.

Just like teeth, hair and skin it just makes sense that your eyes will respond positively when given daily attention.

Here is a quote from respected eye surgeon William Bates (1860-1931) who was alive during the time eye bathing was popular.

These eye baths should have the effect of strengthening and stimulating the eyes in a wholesome, hygienic manner, without irritation. Cases of weak and dull eyes are especially helped by them, and they are helpful in practically every case of eye disease and defect, where they are not distinctly contra-indicated” - William H. Bates, M. D.

As with all things in life there are no guarantees that this will work for you like it did for me but eye bathing is something you should consider bringing into your experience if healthy eyesight is important to you.

Eye bathing solution is free or cheap and an antique cobalt blue eye wash cup can be purchased for less than $15 on eBay as you can see below.

Please do your own research before attempting any new procedure.

What an interesting week in health! My office is very busy with flu infections, pneumonias, ear infections, etc, plus questions about flu shots and the new H1N1 shots. Now I see in the news that a major medical task force is suggesting a change in mammogram screening frequency, and I saw a headline that pharmaceutical companies have continued to raise the prices of name-brand medicines. A cornucopia of interesting and relevant stuff to ponder and discuss!

But, of course, my priority has to be the office, so I will keep this simple, and I promise to post about those other issues later -- some of which deserve more than a little thought.

I have mentioned before that I often enjoy the Well Blog by Tara Parker-Pope in the NYTimes and how often she comments on useful and interesting health information. Yesterday was not unlike many other days as one of the blog posts was about Vitamin D and research that found an association of higher blood levels with less heart disease. The piece, actually authored by Roni Caryn Rabin for the blog, can be found here -- http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/11/16/vitamin-d-shows-heart-benefits-in-study/?em

Almost two years ago, a very good, and succinct, review of Vitamin D and its possible health benefits, authored by Jane Brody, was in the NYTimes and can be found here -- http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/19/health/19brod.html

Over the twenty years I have been in the medical field, many nutrients have surfaced as potentially healthful beyond anyone's prior imagination. Most fade after further research does not replicate the association, or proves the original theory wrong outright.

But Vitamin D seems different. Over the last five or ten years research has continued to point to its benefits. Because the current report only points to a possible association we can not say yet that more Vitamin D decreases heart disease. Additional research is needed to find possible cause and effect, and to study if increasing the Vitamin D in patients with low levels will lessen their heart disease risk later. But the current report, added to all the others, only bolsters the apparent positive benefits of getting sufficient Vitamin D.

For me personally, thinking about Vitamin D reminds me of the spring of my first year of residency and diagnosing a one-year old child with rickets. The African-American toddler was being admitted overnight for some other issue, but on exam I noticed her rickets rosary, small bumps on her ribs, which pointed me to her diagnosis -- as a young doctor at the time, the physical exam finding and diagnosis was a proud moment, and a step forward in my training as well as in the health of the patient. Interestingly, in northern climes, like here in Rochester, after long winters, children can have rickets due to lack of sunshine on the skin if they are not supplementing Vitamin D well enough. To me it was astounding as I thought rickets was a condition only from long ago, but there I was, in modern America, in a high-tech hospital, with a small child suffering from a preventable nutritional deficit. The experience has affected how I approach health and nutrition, though the questions and uncertainty remain in many areas of the subject.

Considering my patients today, I currently recommend adults get at least 800 IU (international units) of Vitamin D daily, and I would not be surprised if that minimum suggestion goes up in the future. Generally we suggest that calcium and vitamin D be taken with a meal. Interestingly, a patient's comment recently helped improve my recommendation on how to take the Vitamin D (I learn something new everyday, and, frequently enough, it comes from my patients): the Vitamin D should be taken with a fat/oil source as well. So, if taking it with a meal, be sure the food has some kind of fat or oil in it, and not be a low-fat meal. Or, take the Vitamin D in a capsule form in an oil base. Or take a Vitamin D tablet with an oil-based supplement such as fish oil capsules. Your skin also makes Vitamin D with exposure to the ultraviolet rays of the sun, but since I am writing this from upstate New York as the winter approaches and we are all covered head-to-toe, I want people to think about the oral supplementation options as those may be more applicable to many of us.

I will leave it at that for now. Keep watching for news about Vitamin D's benefits. Keep trying to get sufficient Vitamin D supplementation. If using the sun to make your own Vitamin D in your skin, please be careful about possible sun damage and skin cancer.

And please watch for later posts about many interesting, and relevant, issues worthy of discussion this week.

The Amazing Cucumber

This information was in The New York Times several weeks ago as part of their "Spotlight on the Home" series that highlighted creative and fanciful ways to solve common problems.

  1. Cucumbers contain most of the vitamins you need every day, just one cucumber contains Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, Vitamin C, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium and Zinc.

 2. Feeling tired in the afternoon, put down the caffeinated soda and pick up a cucumber.  Cucumbers are a good source of B Vitamins and Carbohydrates that can provide that quick pick-me-up that can last for hours.

  3. Tired of your bathroom mirror fogging up after a shower?  Try rubbing a cucumber slice along the mirror, it will eliminate the fog and provide a soothing, spa-like fragrance.

   4. Are grubs and slugs ruining your planting beds?  Place a few slices in a small pie tin and your garden will be free of pests all season long.  The chemicals in the cucumber react with the aluminum to give off a scent undetectable to humans but drive garden pests crazy and make them flee the area.

  5. Looking for a fast and easy way to remove cellulite before going out or to the pool?  Try rubbing a slice or two of cucumbers along your problem area for a few minutes, the phytochemicals in the cucumber cause the collagen in your skin to tighten, firming up the outer layer and reducing the visibility of cellulite.  Works great on wrinkles too!!!

   6. Want to avoid a hangover or terrible headache?  Eat a few cucumber slices before going to bed and wake up refreshed and headache free.  Cucumbers contain enough sugar, B vitamins and electrolytes to replenish essential nutrients the body lost, keeping everything in equilibrium, avoiding both a hangover and headache!!

   7. Looking to fight off that afternoon or evening snacking binge?  Cucumbers have been used for centuries and often used by European trappers, traders and explores for quick meals to thwart off starvation.

   8. Have an important meeting or job interview and you realize that you don't have enough time to polish your shoes?  Rub a freshly cut cucumber over the shoe, its chemicals will provide a quick and durable shine that not only looks great but also repels water.

   9. Out of WD 40 and need to fix a squeaky hinge?  Take a cucumber slice and rub it along the problematic hinge, and voila, the squeak is gone!

   10. Stressed out and don't have time for massage, facial or visit to the spa?  Cut up an entire cucumber and place it in a boiling pot of water, the chemicals and nutrients from the cucumber with react with the boiling water and be released in the steam, creating a soothing, relaxing aroma that has been shown the reduce stress in new mothers and college students during final exams.

  11. Just finish a business lunch and realize you don't have gum or mints?  Take a slice of cucumber and press it to the roof of your mouth with your tongue for 30 seconds to eliminate bad breath, the phytochemcials will kill the bacteria in your mouth responsible for causing bad breath.

  12. Looking for a 'green' way to clean your faucets, sinks or stainless steel?  Take a slice of cucumber and rub it on the surface you want to clean, not only will it remove years of tarnish and bring back the shine, but is won't leave streaks and won't harm you fingers or fingernails while you clean.

   13. Using a pen and made a mistake?  Take the outside of the cucumber and slowly use it to erase the pen writing, also works great on crayons and markers that the kids have used to decorate the walls!!

Pass this along to everybody you know who is looking for better and safer ways to solve life's everyday problems..

From the National Health Federation

This week of November 2-6, 2009, the 31st Session of the Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses (CCNFSDU) met in Dusseldorf, Germany to continue its work in developing standards for global nutrition. Some 260 delegates were in attendance, comprised of various countries’ functionaries and international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) representatives. Never one to disappoint the crowd, Dr. Rolf Grossklaus returned for his final, farewell performance as the CCNFSDU Chairman.

The Committee covered various topics, among them methods of assaying fiber and the establishment of Nutrient Reference Values (NRVs) for Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD)./1 At the special Saturday meeting of the CCNFSDU Working Group on Nutrient Reference Values for Non-communicable Diseases, the NHF was represented by its president Scott Tips and was very active in making its pro-freedom views known. (See our previous release athttp://www.thenhf.com/press_releases/pr_01_nov_2009.html.)

At both meetings (that of the Working Group and the Committee), NHF especially took to task the God-like aura given to the “expert consultations” of Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and World Health Organization (WHO). These are pre-selected groups of experts with a pre-determined outcome to their “consultations” and are hardly scientific. Along with other delegations, the NHF succeeded in retaining language in Codex standards that ensured that Codex would not just look to FAO/WHO expert consultations for scientific knowledge.

Amazing Victory

But the real battle and amazing success took place on Tuesday, November 3rd, during the general session, when the two agenda items covering the NRVs for non-communicable diseases, including the “Proposed Draft Additional or Revised Nutrient Reference Values for Labelling Purposes in the Codex Guidelines on Nutrition Labelling,” were discussed by the Committee.

The CCNFSDU was all prepared to rubber-stamp its approval on the “Proposed Draft Additional or Revised Nutrient Reference Values for Labelling Purposes in the Codex Guidelines on Nutrition Labelling,” which had been pushed by the delegation of the Republic of Korea and others.l

This document was so astoundingly anti-vitamin and mineral it infuriated the NHF representative, who had to restrain himself from using harsh and insulting words when it came NHF’s turn to speak. Appendix 2 of the document is only two pages, but contains already-low values for each of the Vitamins and Minerals listed in the Appendix (except for Fluoride, which of course has an excessively high value). (To see the document, go to www.thenhf.com/press_releases/Appendix2photo11-09.pdf)

For example, the “scientific” values assigned to Vitamin C were being reduced from an already-low 60 milligrams to an even-lower 45 milligrams! The NRV for magnesium was to be cut from 300 milligrams to 240 milligrams. Niacin’s value was to be chopped from 18 milligrams to 15. These were, and are, absurd numbers, based upon nutritional ignorance.

Over a one-hour period, the NHF took the floor repeatedly to lambast the document and to insist that its adoption would be a public-relations nightmare and make Codex the laughingstock of the World. If anything, NHF said, these numbers must be drastically raised. The argument swirled around the room with the NHF holding firm against comments from many other country delegations, especially Australia (which calls harsher standards "an extra bit of comfort"), all of whom thought that these numbers were perfectly normal! Had NHF not challenged the document, there would have been no sustained opposition to its passage.

Instead, NHF kept unrelentingly hammering at the points it had first raised and answered at every chance the counter-arguments of the document’s proponents. Finally, the Chairman, perhaps in exasperation, suggested that the Committee not advance the document to its next step because there was no consensus! This “compromise” was supported by NHF but opposed by others until, with it still hanging in the balance, the Indian delegation firmly stated its support for NHF’s position and against it advancing. India’s timing was impeccable. That was enough for the Chairman, who quickly concluded the debate and held the document back.

But for the National Health Federation, India, and also Costa Rica and Iraq, this document would have advanced towards a more final, fixed form. Now, it remains in a malleable form that will let it be corrected at next year’s CCNFSDU meeting.

Increasingly recognized at these Codex meetings, NHF appreciates the support it has been given by other country-member and INGO delegations. Most of all, though, NHF appreciates the support its membership has given it, financially and morally, that enabled this victory to happen at all.

********************

1 Not to be confused with Maximum Upper Permitted Limits, Nutrient Reference Values (“NRVs”) are nothing more than souped-up RDAs. These are numerical values assigned to each nutrient so as to reflect the mythical typical person’s nutritional needs for that nutrient. By referring to the NRV for, say, magnesium, the consumer is supposed to get an idea of whether he or she is getting an adequate (or in European bureaucratic eyes, an excessive) amount of magnesium. If a consumer, for example, sees that he is getting 100% of his daily requirement for Vitamin C, he will almost certainly mistakenly think that he need look no further to supplement his diet.; he is, after all, getting his full needs met, even though 100% will be defined as 60 milligrams! These values are supposed to be set according to rigorous scientific evidence; but, as NHF has long contended, “science” at Codex levels is far more political than scientific.

A small Alberta vitamin and mineral company called Truehope will finally have its day in court beginning Monday, November 2 when the Federal Court in Calgary will determine the legality and constitutionality of Health Canada’s 2003 seizure of a vitamin and mineral combination (EMPowerplus) being used by thousands of Canadians for the prevention of bipolar symptoms.

Years of court battles over the seizure that left hundreds of desperate Canadians caught in the middle of a regulatory battle have, thus far, amounted to nothing but a huge waste of tax payer dollars. In 2006 Health Canada charged Truehope owners with the illegal sale of a drug, but the courts found them innocent of all wrong doing and demanded the Truehope vitamin and mineral supplements continue to be made available to Canadians.  Furthermore, in his final judgment, Judge G.M. Meagher concluded that even as Health Canada agents were denying access to the supplement they were fully aware that their actions would result in harm or danger to those who depended on the product for their health.[1] In the 2006 Alberta Court case the Canadian Mental Health Association’s, Alberta Director, Ron Lajeunesse bore witness that because of Health Canada’s actions in removing the supplement innocent Canadians lost hope and committed suicide.

Truehope co-founder Anthony Stephan claims that if the constitutional challenge is successful Health Canada will no longer be able to remove a product from the market without first proving in court that the removal will not harm Canadians who use it for their health. “Canadians are harmed when viable natural treatments or preventions are taken away. Drugs should not be the only option for Canadians who choose health. The judgment will extend protection to all Canadians and to all natural health products.”

Current Health Canada regulations allow bureaucrats to remove natural products at will without any accountability to Canadians for their actions.[2]  “We think this kind of unconstitutional free-for-all opens the door for corruption and for big pharma lobby, and closes the door on individual freedom and choice in personal health care,” says Stephan.

The Federal Court Review is open to the public daily from 9:30 – 4:30 and commencing November 2-20 at the Calgary Federal Court 635 8th Ave. S.W. Calgary, AB.

Truehope Challenges Health Canada in Federal Courts Claiming Constitutional Breach

Calgary, AB

Meagher concluded that even as Health Canada agents were denying access to the supplement they were fully aware that their actions would result in harm or danger to those who depended on the product for their health.[1]

In the late 1990s, Anthony Stephan and David Hardy, the gentlemen who later formed Truehope Nutritional Support Ltd. (Truehope), began successfully treating persons suffering from bi-polar disorder with a wide spectrum of vitamins and minerals. The success of their protocol attracted the interest of researchers at the University of Calgary, which subsequently ran two case series on bi-polar patients. These studies showed that eight out of 10 study participants experienced dramatic improvements.

In addition to being published in peer-reviewed journals, the results of these studies impressed the Alberta government, which decided to use taxpayers’ money to fund a large trial. Halfway through the clinical trial, however, Health Canada took steps to shut it down, stating that the mineral germanium posed too much of a risk. Health Canada now admits that it was incorrect about the risk factor of germanium.

Health Canada then turned its sights on Truehope and demanded that it stop selling its nutritional supplement EMPowerplus, even while thousands of Canadians with significant mental illness were being effectively treated with the supplement. Truehope refused to comply with Health Canada’s demands and clearly communicated to Health Canada that if it were to stop selling EMPowerplus, it would result in deaths and hospitalizations.

Health Canada subsequently took a number of actions to enforce Truehope to remove EMPowerplus from the market, which included the seizure of EMPowerplus at the Canadian border and instructing Canada Customs to turn away other shipments as they arrived. These enforcement actions created a literal panic for people who depended upon EMPowerplus and they reacted by doing everything they could. They wrote letters, protested, held news conferences, advertised their concerns and made repeated phone calls. Health Canada implemented counsellors to take note of the numerous calls from people who made it clear that their lives depended on EMPowerplus. The most troubling communications came from the Alberta Branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association. CMHA director Ron LaJeunesse publically warned Health Canada that its actions would lead to suicides and then later publically blamed Health Canada for the deaths of CMHA members.

Despite all the warnings to Health Canada that it was putting Canadians at risk, Health Canada did not relent. It pressed on, eventually charging Truehope in an effort to force the company to stop selling its supplement. However, Truehope was acquitted of these charges because the Court found that if the company had stopped selling EMPowerplus, deaths and hospitalizations would have occurred as a result. The Court further found it was necessary for Truehope to ignore Health Canada. Ironically, EMPowerplus is now licensed for sale in Canada.

At the time that Health Canada seized EMPowerplus, Truehope initiated a Federal Court action to have Health Canada’s seizure powers declared unconstitutional. Truehope’s basic premise is that the state cannot take away health products that Canadians rely upon, without taking into consideration the risk of removing the products and without giving Canadians the opportunity to be heard on the issue. This may seem like common sense, but Health Canada is vigorously trying to protect its seizure powers. This, in itself, is very instructive.

When Health Canada ignored the pleas of Canadians for access to EMPowerplus, it declared that the product – like most natural health products (NHPs) at the time – did not have a licence. It did not matter to Health Canada that people’s lives depended upon the product. Indeed, at the trial, Health Canada inspectors told the Court that things like news of suicides were not relevant. All that mattered to Health Canada was that the product was not in full compliance with the regulations at the time.

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated example. I am not aware of any instance where Health Canada ever considered the risk of removing a natural health product it was attacking or took into consideration input from the Canadian public. I think the mindset of Health Canada has been a major factor in Canadians resisting recent attempts to increase that agency’s seizure powers. Many readers will recall that, prior to the last election, there was a citizens’ revolt against Bill C-51, which would have expanded Health Canada’s seizure and detention powers. There was also concern about Bill C-52, known as the Consumer Products Safety Act, which would have expanded Health Canada’s seizure and detention powers in the area of consumer products.

Interestingly, after the election, Bill C-52 was quietly re-introduced as Bill C-6 and has already been passed in the House of Commons. It is now in the Senate. Most Canadians are not even aware of Bill C-6 and the dangers it presents to some of our fundamental rights and freedoms. For example, Bill C-6 exempts Health Canada inspectors from the law of trespass. These inspectors can come onto your private property and remain there. You cannot make them leave. This is curious because if you instruct members of the regular police force to leave your property, they must do so, unless they have a warrant or there are special circumstances. The regular police force cannot search your property without a warrant.

With this legislation, however, Health Canada will be able to inspect any business, garage or shed on your property, without a warrant. The only place it will not be able to search without a warrant is your home. Whereas the regular police force has to convince a justice it is likely to find evidence of a crime in your home to be able to obtain a legal warrant, Health Canada inspectors need only show the likelihood of a consumer product being found in your home. In effect, under the new law, it is possible for the state to intrude into our homes without evidence of wrongdoing because everyone’s home contains consumer products.

Bill C-6 also allows Health Canada to seize, destroy and/or keep private property without court supervision. This is a move away from the rule of law and it presents a significant danger to our way of life. To appreciate the importance of this, it is necessary to understand why the rule of law is so fundamental. In the past, when rulers wanted to imprison or kill people, soldiers were sent to do the deed. When rulers wanted people’s property, soldiers took care of that as well. After a while, our ancestors decided they did not appreciate tyranny and fought for the rule of law, which simply means that the law is above everyone and it applies to everyone. No one is above the law, no one is exempted from the law, and no one can grant exemption to the application of the law, and there is an independent court between the state and the citizens. Under the rule of law, if the state wants to imprison you or seize your property, it can only do so with court supervision. The courts ensure that people can only be imprisoned or lose property, according to the law.

The importance of the rule of law should be immediately obvious. Without it, our freedom and our property are subject to the “good will” of the state. This is tyranny, whether we expect it to be benign or not. No good has ever come from citizens giving up the rule of law. Indeed, this is the most disconcerting development I have ever witnessed. The state is currently attempting to undermine the rule of law, which is the core philosophical underpinning of our freedoms. We are allowing this to happen because the state is telling Canadians it is necessary that it have these powers to protect our safety. It is time for us to consider the old adage that those who trade their freedom for security will have neither.

Bill C-6, now a deadly few weeks away from seeing royal blue ink, will see us who live in this homeland called Canada descend into civil hell in the cloak of media silence, like a thief in the night, legalizing the barbaric self-righteous seizures they have already committed and that has taken the lives of dozens of people in order to further their eugenics agenda, spearheaded by Globalist leaders Michael Ignatieff., and Steven Harper, who is more of the same. Isn't it a coincidence they are doing all this just in the nick of time for the Supreme Court case Health Canada V. Truehope as well as Health Canada trumpeting in Codex Alimentarius by the December 31, 2009 Codex Alimentarius Compliance deadline?

CODEX ALIMENTARIUS BACKGROUND

Canada is a member of the United Nations/World Health Organization subsidiary called the Codex Alimentarius Commission. Codex Alimentarius means "food code". The Commission, composed of member governments, is mandated to set international reference standards for trade in all kinds of food products such as raw and processed foods, pesticide residues, contaminant levels, labelling, nutritional content, etc. It met in Germany in October 1996 to create binding new global trade rules for health supplements. In June 1999, Codex members will vote on the following laws proposed by the Germans, and supported by the drug giants Hoechst, Bayer and BASF. These are the three daughter companies formed when the Nuremberg War Trials disbanded the notorious IG Farben Cartel of Nazi Germany. These companies are the ones now pushing the hardest to prevent access by the public to nutritional supplements.

Proposed Draft Guidelines for Dietary Supplements:

1. No dietary supplement can be sold for preventive (prophylactic) or therapeutic use;

2. No dietary supplement sold as a food can exceed potency (dosage) levels set by the

commission. Dietary supplements of higher potency will be sold as drugs and sold by

the pharmaceutical or phytopharmaceutical companies. Supplements without an RDA

(e.g. Coenzyme Q10) would be illegal to sell because they would all become drugs;

3. Codex regulations for dietary supplements would become binding (the GATT escape

clause would be eliminated);

4. All new dietary supplements would be banned unless they go through extensive Codex

testing and approval.

How else will they monopolize unpatentable botanicals?

These proposals (which would "harmonize" food and drug laws of all member countries to international standards) are already on the agenda at Codex waiting to be passed. This will automatically restrict access and elevate prices. Expensive prescription only or expensive over the counter drugs will replace the present inexpensive general free availability of herbs, botanicals, vitamins and minerals.

Canada plays a strategic role in Codex. Both of the two big trading blocks (United States and Europe) want Canada's backing because they have opposing positions, with Europe pushing the proposals, and the U.S. remaining opposed to the guidelines, but willing to consider upper safe limits of vitamins and minerals.

ZOLTAN RONA, M.D.

Dr. Rona is a member of Physicians' Committee for Responsible Medicine and a consultant to the Motherisk Program at the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children. He is a columnist for Alive magazine, Health Naturally and the Toronto Star. He has written several books on health, including Return to the Joy of Health and is medical editor of The Encyclopedia of Natural Healing.

Codex meets every two years, usually in Rome. The Codex process is secretive, documentation is generally unavailable to the public, and there is little coverage in the media. Four steps have already been taken in the Codex process over the past few years on the German "Proposed Draft Guidelines for Dietary Supplements" (outlined above), and voting in favour of adopting these German proposal has been overwhelming. The Codex process could jump to step 8 at the next meeting in June, 1999 which would finalize these restrictions.

If Codex Alimentarius has its way, then herbs, vitamins, minerals, homeopathic remedies, amino acids and other natural remedies you have taken for granted most of your life will be gone. The name of the game for Codex is to shift all remedies into the prescription category so they can be controlled exclusively by the medical monopoly and its bosses, the major pharmaceutical firms. Predictably, this scenario has been denied by both the Canadian Health Food Association and the Health Protection Branch of Canada (HPB).

The Codex proposals already exist as law in Norway and Germany where the entire health food industry has literally been taken over by the drug companies. In these countries, vitamin C above 200 mg is illegal as is vitamin E above 45 IU, vitamin B1 over 2.4 mg and so on. Shering-Plough, the Norway pharmaceutical giant, now controls an echinacea tincture which is being sold there as an over the counter drug at grossly inflated prices. The same is true of ginkgo and many other herbs, and only one government controlled pharmacy has the right to import supplements as medicines which they can sell to health food stores, convenience stores or pharmacies.

The Codex proposals have the backing of Canadian Codex Commission representatives. Further evidence of Canadian involvement is the position of the Canadian Health Protection Branch (HPB) on what is, or is not, a food or a drug. For example, garlic, ginger, liquorice and peppermint are considered to be foods when sold as spices. If a grocery store manager makes claims for their therapeutic effects, they then become drugs via an HPB mechanism which remains to be defined.

Stop Codex human rights violations by banding together to demand health freedom and an end to Codex.

SUZANNE HARRIS

Suzanne Harris holds a juris-doctorate degree in law and an honours degree in

political science, specializing in international organizations. She has been an

arbitrator for the International Chamber of Commerce in Paris and is co-founder of

the Law Loft, an independent think tank, and co-producer of the Law Loft Report, a

nightly news analysis and broadcast from KCXL in Kansas City. She is the leading

expert on how international organizations affect health freedom in North America.

VIOLATIONS OF OUR HEALTH FREEDOMS Health freedom along with many other freedoms are disappearing in the United States and Canada. At the Law Loft, we disregarded everything already written about our current problems with health freedom, and worked strictly from original documents to determine why our health freedoms and other freedoms are disappearing. We ultimately discovered that there is an international movement in progress aiming to destroy health freedom in every country on the planet. This movement does not begin at any particular parliament or congress. It appears to start on the drafting tables or conference tables of the transnational corporate board rooms. It is not exactly for the purpose of destroying health freedom as such; it is rather for the purpose of stealing what is yours and making it theirs, and very possibly, having long term control of everybody's access to most of the health products that you and I buy today and take for granted. This is being done to us through a variety of mechanisms in the very sincere hope that we won't catch on until it's too late. The first mechanism is a new matrix of international organizations that are taking shape generally outside of the United Nations and are removing sovereignty from all of the individual nations which are members of these organizations.

HARMONIZATION Everybody, United States, Canada, the Europeans, Japan, most of Asia, S. America have signed agreements pledging total harmonization of their laws including food and drug laws to international standards in the future. And that is being achieved through different vehicles including interim agreements such as the one that was agreed to last year between the U.S. and the European Union. So you need to think in terms not only what is of immediate benefit to you in Canada, but what will have long term benefits.

CODEX ALIMENTARIUS LIMITS NATIONAL SOVEREIGNTY In the health freedom movement, the organization at the moment which presents the greatest challenge to you is the Codex Alimentarius Commission which is a joint program of the World Health Organization and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Codex's history is extremely interesting because it is a kind of model for this type of transnational takeover. Codex seemed benign in the beginning, as most of these things do because they seem to have no discernable forceful impact on regulations at home. That all changed with the adoption of NAFTA and GATT because each of those agreements contained within them Sanitary (Health) and Phytosanitary agreements. Suddenly the harmless old Codex became enforceable. Nowadays Codex guidelines carry a lot of weight because they are enforceable through the World Trade Organization, whereas before you had the choice whether or not to accept its international guidelines. Enforcement is carried out by withdrawing other trade privileges conferred by the trade agreements. I have been saying this for several years now, and in some quarters it has provoked a fair amount of laughter and comments like, "That can't possibly be true, because the trade representative told us it wasn't true". Read the documents, you will get a nasty shock. The detractors have now pretty much disappeared into the closet because the World Trade Organization has issued its final decision on the European beef hormone case.

CAN CODEX FORCE US TO BUY WHAT WE DON'T WANT? In the interest of public health, Europeans refused to have beef and beef products from cattle given artificial growth hormones imported into the European Union. The United States and Canada then filed actions against the European Union at the Dispute Settlement Body of the World Trade Organization. The initial opinion was private, and it basically gave everybody a minor heart attack because it said, "If you don't follow Codex regulations on health and safety issues, what you do is illegal under these new international agreements". In their final decision, the World Trade Organization has backed off a bit from this original position and said they would leave it to the committees of the WTO to harmonize, but they maintained that in the case of beef hormones, what the European Union did was illegal and they have to conform to the international rules.

NEW GLOBAL RULES FOR HEALTH So here we are affected not only by what happens in Ottawa or Washington, but by what happens at these Codex meetings as well. Unfortunately, the Codex meetings take place all over the world in little committee meetings with the major meetings occurring in Geneva or Rome every two years, and the documentation is not generally available. That makes it very difficult for us to know what they are up to. So over the last couple of years I have followed them around to pick up the documentation, and in general terms this is what they are up to: ***They want to limit internationally and nationally, access to vitamins and minerals and all kinds of dietary supplements. They want to limit potencies and combinations. In the case of potencies, they want to limit them to useless levels, reserving the right to sell and produce the higher potency products to the drug companies and the big phytopharmaceutical companies, principally of Germany and France (which are also connected to the big drug companies). ***They want to pass off genetically engineered foods around the world in every market without labelling. ***They want to speed up the process of approval of food stuffs so as not to impede international commerce, and their solution is to let the corporations police themselves. ***They want to gut the powers of all the regulatory agencies such as Health Protection Branch in Canada and the Food and Drug Administration in the U.S. and leave the shells in place, but take the power away and transfer those powers to the international level. This is already in progress!

HEALTH PROTECTION BRANCH (CANADA) This gives you one important lesson that is not obvious. You don't want to support anything that would dismantle the Health Protection Branch, but understanding that, you have to help the Health Protection Branch to do the right thing. You want to limit them at the parliamentary level to do the job as you define it. For information about the dismantling of the HPB which has already begun see the insert by the National Coalition for Health Freedom.

WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION (WHO) Codex is simply one among many international threats. Other threats include the World Health Organization which has international reference agency status under both the GATT and NAFTA under the technical barriers to trade agreement, and the WHO has a complete plan in mind for the sale of botanicals as well as controlling of your family doctors (making them into robots).

MULTILATERAL AGREEMENT ON INVESTMENT (MAI) In addition, we have MAI on the horizon. It has been called "NAFTA on Steroids". I agree with Mr. Clarke's characterization of this proposed international agreement as "corporate rule treaty". In other words if it passes, they win and we all lose.

As outlined by Paul Hellyer in his book, The Evil Empire, "The Canadian government has been aggressively promoting this treaty which has been negotiated in great secrecy by the 29-nation Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in Paris, France. It was originally slated for signature in Spring of 1997, but has been delayed. You may think it has disappeared, but secret negotiations are continuing behind closed doors, and MAI will be reactivated at some future date. It is supported by international banks and multinational corporations including some in Canada, and is in reality a bill of rights for these banks and the corporations they control. It will hand over our sovereign rights concerning who may or may not invest in our countries to an unelected world organization run by big business. The treaty would make it impossible for Canadian legislators either federal or provincial to alter or improve environmental standards for fear of being sued by multinational corporations whether operating in Canada or not. This will create a world without borders ruled by a virtual dictatorship of the world's most powerful central banks and multinational companies. This world is an absolute certainty if we all sit on our hands and do nothing." (Ed.)

CODEX AIMS TO PROFIT THE MULTI-NATIONAL PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANIES Companies look for a regulatory framework that will maximize their profits. They don't really care about what happens to you or me. Profit margins are believed to be highest when you take things like vitamins and minerals in high potencies, and herbs and botanicals, and turn them into over the counter drugs because in that class you can limit competition by setting the obstacles high enough that the small companies can't compete, and you can charge a great deal more money for your product. At the same time you can also make therapeutic claims for your product. If your bottle of garlic says "ancient anti-inflammatory and anti-infectious cure", it will sell better. So the bigger companies, especially the ones with the German and French connections, all see this as a golden opportunity to make more money by turning these products into over the counter drugs, whether you call it a third category (a separate third category, "neither food nor drug") or a drug. From the consumer point of view this approach is disastrous because it means low potency product at high price. All of the pharmaceutical companies have already begun a massive buyout of the German phytopharmaceutical companies, so a herbal company in Germany is likely to be owned by Monsantos etc.

OUR OBJECTIVES You have to define your objectives now, which is maximum availability of multiple combinations, unlimited combinations of herbs, vitamins and botanicals in high potencies without government limitation on potency, but with cautionary labelling.

STEPS YOU CAN TAKE TO RESTORE YOUR HEALTH FREEDOM Sometimes it is better to do nothing than to do the wrong thing like blindly following a leader. You shouldn't follow any leader until you have personally convinced yourself, not that he is a nice man, but whether or not his philosophy and what he is doing is in your best interest. You have to ask yourself, what forces out there are against my best interests? In the health freedom field they are: drug companies, dietary supplement companies that are linked to drug companies and producers of novel and genetically engineered foods.

In terms of this international contest, you would be better off if you keep your dietary supplements as food. You would be better off if you can form a coalition between the Japanese drug act which is flawed, the American drug act which is flawed and the Canadian drug act which is also very flawed and try to create something that is better than what you have already got and will help the Americans and Japanese in a better direction. Then with that three-part coalition, you can then confront the European Union and the South Americans. If you don't do that, if you don't think in terms of the international picture as well, you will ultimately lose, because in the harmonization meetings between the different regional blocks, your position will simply just get out-voted.

JOHN HAMMELL

John Hammell is a legislative advocate and the founder of International Advocates

for Health Freedom (IAHF) located in Hollywood, Florida. Their main goal is to

gather and disseminate information so that we will be in a better position to fight

back. He works along with health freedom fighters world-wide like Citizen's Voice

GERMAN PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANIES BEHIND CODEX PROPOSALS Around the world, the pharmaceutical industry is attempting to get safe herbs and supplements classified as drugs just as they have here in Canada. They are trying to impose stricter regulations in order to have control of the market. They are trying to set things up to the advantage of these German phytopharmaceutical companies and their American partners by raising the hurdles so that the smaller companies can't clear them. This seems to be a theme that is constant throughout the world. In June 1997, a Canadian Codex proposal which threatened to create a "no trade" list of herbs was abandoned due to massive consumer protest which drove former Health Minister David Dingwall out of office. IAHF and other consumer groups brought this about. At the same time, the German Codex proposal backed by German pharmaceutical companies actively seeking to control the dietary supplement business threatens to block consumer access to vitamins and minerals within the therapeutic range (megadoses). This proposal was knocked back from step 5 to step 3 when the Germans attempted to advance it from step 5 to step 6 at the 1997 Codex meeting.

In a recent conversation, John Hammel mentioned that tremendous grass roots opposition all over the world has helped to delay the passing of the German Codex proposal. One of the delegates commented at the meeting "These people seem to think they have a right to these things". Most recently, at the September, 1998 Codex meeting in Berlin, Dr. Matthias Rath, M.D. formerly with the Linus Pauling Institute, staged demonstrations, and plans to file a formal legal complaint to the International Court of Justice against international pharmaceutical companies including Hoechst, BASF, Bayer and Merck (see website www.rath.nl).

The next Codex meeting will be held June 28, 1999 in Rome, and the Germans will again attempt to advance their proposal to step 5 or push it all the way through. The stage has been set for them to move beyond step 4 using the "Risk Assessment Document" which is presently being circulated to all the delegates for review. This document sets supplement limits, "although there is in fact no clear scientific agreement that most humans require nutrients at the same level, and the entire concept of a one-size-fits-all balanced diet may, indeed, be fatally flawed" (S. Harris). This document was generated by the National Academy of Sciences, composed of scientists paid by pharmaceutical grant money. Health Canada also helped fund this study but with no input from consumers.

GREEN PAPER ON HERBS In January 1998, at the request of the European Commission, the European Medicine Evaluation Agency released a draft report called the "Green Paper". This report proposes that if a herb is medicinal or affects physiological functions in any way, it is a medicine and should be exclusively sold as a drug. It is now a criminal offence in Europe to sell herbs as foods which makes it the same as selling other illegal drugs. This was all brought about by EEC6565.

ENGLAND In England, the Health Minister sent a legal document to the European Union to be rubber stamped which would ban vitamin B6 to the untherapeutic dosage of 10 mg. They totally ignored the scientific evidence behind the safety of B6. It was then scheduled to go before the British parliament; however due to very strong objections by a large consumer lobby, it was not passed.

FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION (FDA) IN THE U.S. In the U.S. we are trying to pass a bill called HR2868 which inserts the words "other than foods" into the current statutory definition of drug (i.e. defines a drug as "other than food") which would stop the FDA from regulating supplements as drugs and would allow therapeutic claims to be made on dietary supplements as long as they are true.

BEWARE OF SUPPLEMENT COMPANIES WHICH SUPPORT CODEX There are some health companies out there who are selling vitamins, minerals, herbs etc. who are supporting Codex. There is an entity called the European-American Phytomedicine Coalition which is at work on both sides of the U.S. Canadian border. It is comprised of American and Canadian herb companies like Quest, Nature's Way and NuLife) which have formed alliances with German phytopharmaceutical companies. Over the last decade or so, the multinational pharmaceutical companies have been buying up smaller phytomedicine and supplement companies (see Gen Eng News, Apr 15/97, Vol.17,No.8 and also see figure 6 of Herbalgram at www.healthy.net/hwlibraryjournals/herbalgram/1995/summer/features/

phytomed.html). It is in their best interest to sweep their smaller competition off a cliff. We know who these groups are through their stands on these issues. It is to their advantage to present a lot of disinformation which they have been doing. They really want supplements categorized as drugs. Here in Canada any company which is behind the third category (which stipulates that herbs and supplements should be a separate third category, "neither food nor drug") is a company that you cannot trust (see Dr. Rowland's section). In the States, any company that is not in favour of HR2868 is a company that we can't trust.

NOT ALL CONSUMER ADVOCACY GROUPS ARE GOOD FOR THE CONSUMER There is a fake grass roots organization called Citizens for Health which has chapters which have been actively promoting the concept of herbs as drugs through the German phytopharma-ceutical companies. These groups have diverted attention away from problems with Codex Alimentarius and have stifled dissent to Codex by expelling members. In the U.S., they do not endorse HR2868 which aims to remove food from the current overly-broad statutory definition of drug and this group is likely heavily influenced by American companies which have formed partnerships with German phytopharmaceutical companies. We have the same suspicion about the Canadian Coalition for Health Freedom (not the National Coalition for Health Freedom) which is actively pushing the third category which would give a monopoly to the largest herb and vitamin companies so they could do away with their smaller competition through unnecessary regulations. They try to create the impression of being consumer groups, but they are organized and funded by industry and industry driven concepts. I would urge you to oppose this very strongly. In the U.S., Canada, Europe, South Africa and Australia, herbal advisory panels have been convened and in each case these panels were thinly disguised pharmaceutical front groups designed to steer things in the direction of more stringent regulations.

CANADA'S HEALTH PROTECTION BRANCH The government and the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health wants to regulate substances like herbs and vitamins, now considered foods under the Food and Drugs Act and put them into a third category. The first category would be for food, the second category for drugs, and the third category for supplements (separate from food or drugs). We don't need a third category. This will effectively destroy smaller competitors, and keep these products out of the public domain (that is make them available only by prescription), and there is absolutely no reason to do it because existing regulations in Canada's Food and Drugs Act gives Health Canada all the power it needs to protect us from harm and fraud in the sale of dietary supplements and natural health products. )In fact Health Canada and the Standing Committee on Health are in violation of the Constitution Act on some of their recommendations. The Constitution Act gives the provinces the exclusive powers to regulate health. It is not federal jurisdiction. If a substance is safe for human consumption, the feds have no business restricting it in any way. And they restrict it in insidious ways by charging suppliers licence fees, product registration fees, pre-approval of health claims etc.OMIT?) In Canada it is illegal to say on a bottle of vitamin C that it prevents scurvy. The Food and Drug Act prevents it. That is a violation of the charter of Rights and Freedoms. It is also idiocy and we accept it. We let them get away with it. One by one, they are taking things off the market such as amino aids tryptophan and L-carnitine. Both tryptophan and L-carnitine used to be sold in health food stores for about $14 a bottle for 100 capsules. Now they are only available by prescription for $120 to $190 a bottle. So you see what the motive is. Health Canada is participating in the take-over of this industry. There are vested interests everywhere, but what gives them the power to do this? In Canada, by definition in section 2 of the Food and Drugs Act, a drug includes any substance which is used in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of a disease or disorder. This means that the nature of the substance and its safety are irrelevant to the definition. The only thing that matters is what you are using it for. So the moment you make a claim that it improves health in any way, it becomes a drug.

The Codex Alimentarius is an effort to regulate healing herbs and botanicals which really make people well. In my opinion, based on massive evidence and documentation, it is linked to a population control agenda for controlling people from birth through the health care system to death. In the 1920s the Rockefeller family established a virtual monopoly over American medicine and largely funded the pharmaceutical companies that control world pharmaceuticals. They set the standards for pharmaceuticals, drugs and vaccines throughout the world. They also created the cancer industry, Rockefeller Foundation and the Sloan-Kettering Memorial Cancer Institute. These people have controlling interests over the world's pharmaceutical and chemical industries. It is no coincidence that the United Nations was predominantly built by the Rockefellers, and all of this represents the New World Order, a phrase made famous by George Bush. Before I began my research, I had no idea that the Rockefeller family and a handful of other wealthy families stand behind this agenda. In my opinion, this agenda that is unfolding is consistent with virtually every prophecy made. What happens when the multi-nationals have got all the money, there is maybe only one or two wealthy families in power, and United Nations and NATO-UN peacekeeping forces dominate the planet, and there is one world economy like the European Union. That is where the population agenda fits in. (For more information on this topic see Consumer Health newsletters by Len Horowitz, Sep. and Oct. 1998.)

One of the best books I could recommend to you is The Science of Coercion by Christopher Simpson who studied psychological warfare methods used on leading scientists throughout the world including health care professions, since 1945 until virtually the present. Christopher Simpson concludes that it is predominantly the Rockefellers who are literally behind this entire medical-industrial complex and the World Health Organization.

Codex is part of a symptom and we have to get at the root of the problem. They are hitting us from so many sides that the alternative health care movement has constantly been on the defence, decade after decade, because of the Rockefeller led military/medical industry. The best defence is a good offense. Now that we have the documentation, the evidence to legally attack these people, it is up to us to do that.

We don't want to get overwhelmed by thinking that we are going to save the planet. Share information with family and friends and get them involved. Give them the knowledge that they need to make healthier choices. If you have a little extra energy, make phone calls, send faxes and tapes, produce educational symposiums and workshops. Set up your own non-profit educational organization, produce educational literature; you can also develop your own network. You can deliver political messages about how nutritional supplements are being jeopardized, how we are being attacked from all sides, not only by the WHO and Codex but also from corporate levels.

I would encourage you to get involved politically by working with many of the consumer advocacy groups.

Read the information on Codex, share it with people you know, talk to your media, talk to or write your Members of Parliament, have educational meetings about Codex at your clubs. Make people aware - it's amazing how many people still don't know what's going on. Initiate legal suits, support your advocates who are attending the Codex meetings and write Canadian Codex delegates before the June 1999 Codex meeting.
