So there's a new kid on the block in the ruby server world, Unicorn. The guys over at github have a good writeup on their blog about what it is and how to user it, that also posted a god config file to monitor it. Also if you want a good explanation of why unicorn is cool, check out Ryan Tomayko's article "I like Unicorn because it's Unix". One important note on both their unicorn config and their config, the paths they have are very specific to their setup. If you're running a normal capistrano setup, you'll want to store the sockets and pids in the shared directory rather than the current. So now the only part is the front end web server. This typically tends to be nginx(pronounced engine x) or apache these days, though litespeed and lighttpd are good as well. My personal choice is nginx, installing it and getting running is pretty easier and straight forward. All that's left to do is tweak the nginx.conf file. I used a modified version of ezra's nginx.conf file. Here's the conf with my optimizations:

Note if you're not using a socket just set the server in the upstream block to 127.0.0.1:<%=@port %>

When I was a youngster, before most of the hope was beaten out of me by the stubborn banality of life, average was OK. Getting an average mark in school was OK, getting an average job was OK too and doing any better was very good indeed. Average has somehow received a bad name. It has been murdered in the night and a new impostor awesome (often followed by an ugly exclamation mark) has taken its place like some pixie changeling.

Awesome is the end of the rainbow where unicorns dance. It's ephemeral and trying to get there is disappointing. It's disappointing because it's a mythical place not suitable for regular folks. It's reserved for the delusional. Those people who've been touched and have wide bright shining eyes that see their special angels and unicorns guiding them to their awesome paradise.

Some of this neurotic need to be wonderful is inspired by ignorance of how averages work. Usually there are a few folks who do really well, a few who do really badly and a great big clump of beige average people in the middle. That beige clump is most people. That's where most of us are most of the time. Some of us get to be down the crappy end of the scale sometimes that's not so much fun but it happens. Some of us get to be up the good end of the scale sometimes. This almost only ever happens to those people who knuckle down and work hard. Most of us are somewhere in the middle. The middle is OK. It's where most of us are. At least you have some company.
