SuperDuper backup
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!

What in the world is up with the FreeAgent Desk Seagate Drive? It seems that the external HD has some files or software in there that messes things up when wanting to format the drive for Mac OS extended (journaled). Bizzarro. Here's a tiny time line of my day with sprinkles of troubleshooting along the way.

10 am Up, exhausted (I know LATE, but the mighty Hunter decided to nurse basically throughout the night....non stop almost....I know)

10:30-11:30 am Breakfast for Hunter and I. Hunter clean up.

11:30-12:30 Erica, our lovely babysitter came over to watch Hunter while I interviewed Michael Londra. Was able to read comments and tweets regarding my rant yesterday

1 pm- 2:30 pm Hunter fell asleep!!!! At this time, I got a chance to email Victor Cajiao and Dave Nanian from SuperDuper. I also got on the phone with a new journalist/documentary producer that I'm going to be working with and had to meet today. Finally was able to get into SuperDuper and begin to see that the trouble was all about the HD. The fabulous Victor called me and he talked me through what needed to be done. Right as I was about to attempt to do what Victor told me to do, Hunter woke up.

2:30-3:30 pm Had to get Hunter and myself ready to go out in the mid forties windy weather to meet with journalist at the Co-op, and walked to the Co-op.

3:30-5:30 pm Meeting at the Co-op + Lunch

5:30-6:30 pm Was finally able to focus a bit on the formating issue at hand as Hunter's Daddy had gotten her some new Elmo DVD's and I put one on as I dove into disk utility. I found that there were still troubles and decided to call Victor to speak with him. We had a productive conversation solving the problem.

6:30 pm Finally backed up with SuperDuper!

What was the problem: After partitioning the ext HD, only one partition formatted properly, the other one was unable to be verified or repaired:

Disk Utility error message
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!

I ended up having to erase the entire drive and repartion again. The second time the first partition formatted properly to for Mac OS extended (journaled) but the second one 'refused'. It would only accept being formatted as a FAT32.

What solved the problem? I erased the drive again and this time partitioned it into 3 partitions. I made the 3rd partition as small as I could make it. For whatever reason this solved the problem. So now I have 3 partitions....Not exactly what I wanted but am just happy that I was able to back up, back up and back up!

I'm still not sure what in the world was going on. It just makes me wanna back up on the cloud...I just didn't want to keep spending more money!

SuperDuper and External Hard Drive Rant from Elsie Escobar on Vimeo.

So as of this moment as I'm hastily writing this post I have not addressed any of the issues that I speak of in the video. Welcome to Day 4 of NaVloPoMo (November video blogging month!)

*sigh*

Troubleshooting is for people who aren't mothers to a one year old.

Upon coming home from teaching I:

  • Cleaned up after Hunter's dinner
  • Cleaned up Hunter's play area
  • Hunter shower time
  • Hunter put to bed
  • Swept and tidied up the homestead (while quickly editing video above and uploading it. iMovie rocks for that)
  • Final preparations for interview tomorrow with Michael Londra for iProng Mag

Yea, no time to even attempt to launch SuperDuper again...Before shutting down computer I attempted to launch it 3x and not once did it actually load...regarding the external HD, no clue what's going on. It's a 1.5 TB Free Agent Desk External Drive by Seagate. Boo

****EXTRA EXTRA**** update, it seems all the trouble was due to the external HD and nothing to do with SuperDuper. Read the full update here

I have finished my podcast but ran into a little problem. I saved when I was making it and at the end. I then closed it. When Iopened it up I had lost most of my audio, is there a simple way of restoring or do I have to put it all in again?

Cindy

Cindy,

A couple of questions for you. Are you sure that when you saved, you didn't do a "Save As..." and save the completed project in a different folder or in another name? One thing to check is to open up Camtasia and in the File menu, look for an option to "Open Recent..." If you did have more than one version of your podcast, it may show up in that list.

If that does not help, just remember that each time you do a voice narration in Camtasia, you are prompted to save that bit of audio as a file. Any voice narration that you have done, whether it is in your timeline/podcast or not, should be saved somewhere on your computer. Hopefully, all of your voice narration files are in your project folder and all you have to do to get them back into your project is to click on "Import Media" on the left side of the Camtasia window, browse to your voice narration files, and then drag them into the appropriate place in your podcast timeline from the clip bin.

If they are not in your project folder, or you didn't take the time to create a folder and organize all of your resources there, then you'll have to do some digging to find those audio files. This is why we stress organizing all of your project media into one place - it does take a little bit of extra time and effort, but it is WELL worth it if something like this does happen. If you can't find the files, try to do another short voice narration and when you save it, pay close attention to where Camtasia tries to save it - the rest of your files are probably there.

If all of that fails, then either Paul or I will spend some time with you on Friday at the conference to see if we can help. Good luck, and we'll see you tomorrow!

Clint

I've been fighting with Mac problems ever since shortly after I moved it from Troy to Ann Arbor. The 10.5.8 patch I tried to install after getting it set up froze during install and, after waiting a good half hour, I gave up and shut it down.

Big mistake #1.

Something got screwed up so badly by doing that, it couldn't even find the OS during bootup. After five failed attempts at restoring from Time Machine backup, three format-and-reinstalls, two calls to Apple, and one dire threat from Aaron to send it to the Apple store, it finally seemed to be behaving normally, if still lagging a bit during disk operations. Spotlight seemed to be the last culprit, endlessly indexing my hard drive and backup drive, until I forced it to stop and rebuild the index from scratch. It was much better, but still didn't feel quite stable.

Then, last night, I was trying to update WoW addons and ran into permission errors. I used Privilege Fix, which had worked perfectly at mass-correcting my file permissions after restoring from backup (bless you, whoever made this program), on my entire Applications directory. It was chugging along fine until it got about halfway through the 217,000 files, then froze. I waited about a half hour while it did nothing, then gave up and shut it down.

Big mistake #2.

When I turned it back on, I got the dreaded grey circle-slash of "no OS found". I booted from the install disk, ran Disk Utility, and finally saw the message that validated what I'd suspected from the very beginning of all my troubles with this:

-----
This drive has reported a fatal hardware error to Disk Utility.

If the drive has not failed completely, back up as much data as you can and then replace it with a working drive.
-----

Glorious. Well, now at least I could call Apple, show them proof of hardware failure (I took a pic of the screen), and get a new drive. I shut it down and went to bed. I got up early this morning, hoping to prep and ride Stormshadow to work, but got rained out. Just for the hell of it, I flipped on the iMac to confirm it was still dead.

It booted.

Not only did it boot, it booted flawlessly, with none of the delays I'd been experiencing for the last three weeks. Every program set to run automatically ran normally. Every program I started manually started immediately, without bouncing in the dock for 30 seconds first. It finally feels stable, with none of the split-second delays and hesitations that, taken together, told me something was wrong.

I'm totally floored. I have no idea how it could have gone from "fatal hardware error" to perfect operation, overnight, while shut off.

"When you do a Google search, some sites suggest using the command line utility fsck_hfs with the -y option (assume Yes to every question.. if you run an fsck on a damaged filesystem you’ll usually see why this is a good idea).  That didn’t work for me, it would just crap out again the same way Disk Utility had.  What DID work was the following.. (after a sudo su -)

# fsck_hfs -rf /dev/disk1s3"

From Devlab

My 250GB Freecom external drive suddenly won't mount this morning. Just so happens it housed both my Time Machine backups and my iTunes library. I can deal with losing the backups but the library consisted of songs and videos I've collected since almost ten years ago. The iTunes library is actually also backed up in another hard drive but apparently that drive is failing, so it was imperative that I save this library at least until I can buy another drive.

Disk Utility diagnosed the failure as being, "Invalid node structure," which essentially means it's not necessarily physically damaged, it just has a busted file structure . Generally a reformat would fix it. My problem was it needed to be backed up while at the same time the drive volume wasn't mounting.

After leaving the drive unplugged for 10-15 minutes, I reconnected it using its built in Firewire cable and suddenly it sprang to life. Except it became read-only. I couldn't change anything inside but it didn't matter because I was going to transfer the contents out, not modifying it.

Luckily I had an empty identical drive sitting around at the office. Using a USB cable, I plugged that in and used it to temporarily store the contents of my failed drive. Didn't occur to me to use CarbonCopyCloner until I was halfway through the backup even though I had it ready. It would have made things a lot easier. Disk Warrior would also have helped except the CD was at home.

I ended up copying everything except the Time Machine backups to the second Freecom drive, reformatted the damaged drive, then putting all the previous contents back in to it. Not sure how it got damaged but the last thing I did was stop a Time Machine backup from completing. Something I've done many times before without any negative side effect.

The above excerpt from Devlab might have also helped had I found it before I went through all this trouble. Hope it's useful to you.
