Below is a little piece written by Tarun.  @i_am_teee on twitter.

Tarun is preparing for his first Sovereign Series Ocean Swim across Auckland Harbour.

On Saturday 14th November 2009 he swam long distance in open water for the first time.

Here is his story.

My First Ocean Swim

Sure we’ve all had that one off splash in the sea, sure we’ve all had that one swim where we congratulate ourselves for crashing through some waves, but I recently went for my first ocean swim. Last Saturday at 7.30 in the morning I rocked up all wet suited and goggled at Kohi beach. I introduced myself as a first timer and joined the Waitakere Triathlon group that was willing to let me tag along. Now in a pool, sure I could swim the distance and even add an occasional burst of speed, I wanted to prove myself, well couldn’t really afford to wuss out could I?

So I walk up to the water and walk in, the first thing you notice that even in the gentle sunshine, its cold, bone shattering kind of cold, but obviously that turned out to be the least of my worries. Everyone around me dove in, got comfy and set off, I didn’t really think much of it, I mean water is water is water is water, how much different could it be from a pool? I dive in, and start with a nice calm slice through the water, first stroke, second ... third ... and oh boy, that’s when it hit me how terrifyingly different ocean swimming is compared to a pool.

Every sense is the first to get hit by the sheer vastness of the ocean. There is a pressure that pushes into you. This changes how you breathe; it’s definitely no cosy blanket! The lack of anything to look at or judge yourself against is tremendously mind blowing. I had to get out. I panicked. I needed to breathe, steady myself, calm down, all at once.

I did however; notice that the wetsuit did keep me surprisingly warm. And floaty! Alright, calm myself, take a breath, and go once again. This time I was prepared for the infinite mass of water, prepared for how incapable I actually was. But I started swimming anyway. That’s when I hit my other problem. This one apparently is a biggie-navigation. You think your swimming in a straight line, but are you? You can’t really see anything below you and since your breathing to the side all I saw was trees and more ocean. And then there’s that thing that makes oceans go round, currents. Well the flow of the water drags you completely off course. I can honestly say that within the first 250 meters I adjusted myself at least 4 times.

Finally I made to the first yellow buoy. Towards the second I had to stop and correct my course every now and then which not only annoyed me but meant that I was swimming more than I had to. I’m not complaining though, swimming more than I had to gave me a little more time to get comfortable in my wetsuit. It’s a huge jump, swimming in togs to a wetsuit. The feel is totally different. Swimming a little more also gave a chance to get comfortable in the ocean which was my main concern. You have to understand how there is that little bubble of panic at the back of your head, but as you swim, stroke after stroke, you control your breathing you learn to tell it to pipe down and very soon, by time I was at the second yellow buoy, all I wanted was to get to the red pole. The red pole you can hardly see from the yellow buoy, but that’s exactly what I did. Made it to the red pole. Sure I was all over the place, on the way back from the red pole I almost swam all the way to Rangitoto, but gosh I loved every second, every stroke and every breathe of it. Okay maybe not the first 10 that I fumbled through, but what an amazing experience.

That was my first time ocean swimming, a week from which I will swim 2.8 km’s across the Auckland harbour. And wowzers am I looking forward to that!

Earlier this fall, I decided that I was going to compete and complete a sprint triathlon in 2010.  I am a Pilates teacher, and on-again, off-again cardio junkie and I prefer getting my workout through a hard advanced Pilates workout as opposed to running, biking and swimming.  So why, you may ask, did I decide to do a triathlon?  I have no idea.  I wanted to continue to challenge myself, that much is for certain, but I think the biggest factor was the fact that I don't know if I have ever pushed my body in this way before.  So, with all that being said, I officially started my triathlon training today.  Blind, with no plan and minimal training knowledge.

I belong to an amazing gym that has a beautiful lap pool, am great cycling studio and any and all equipment that I could ever need to train.  I decided that I could easily knock out 10 full laps in the pool.  Easy task right?  That's what I thought.  I jump in the pool, put my goggles on and pushed off the wall.  About half-way into my first length of the pool, I realized that I am VERY out of shape and that this is going to be much harder than I was expecting.  With the help of a kick-board and a lot of rests after each length of the pool, I did finish my goal of 10 full laps.  I think prepping for this is going to be far more work than I was anticipating.  I am starting to dread my first spinning class this week.

On deck tomorrow - 60 minute group power class and a two mile walk/run with Dani.

Thank goodness the Chicago triathlon is over nine months away.  Plenty of time to prep!
