I’ve just come back from a meeting of past and present holders of Researcher Development Initiative (RDI) projects organised by the ESRC. If you haven’t come across it yet the RDI is a great initiative from the ESRC that aims to stimulate the professional development of researchers by providing training and master classes in aspects of researchers practice (primarily advanced methodologies). I was involved in the TRI-ORM project which looked at training researchers in the use of online research methods.

The meeting was a good attempt to transfer good practice from one generation of award holders to the next and ESRC have stated an intention to support the next phase of the RDI with more meetings of this kind. The idea would be that RDI as a programme has the potential to be more than the sum of its parts. I’d applaud this and hope that ESRC will be able to continue to fund the RDI stream of activity. It seems like they are getting a lot for their money. It also seems important to me that in the context of the early career initiatives that have been associated with the Roberts agenda that funding councils do something to develop the skills of those of us who have moved beyond our ‘early careers’.

After almost a year of research and preparation I am so proud to officially announce the launch of Photo Journeys - a selection of workshops and photo holidays from yours truly.

These are photography workshops hopefully like no other. In addition to photographing wonderful locations (Venice, Paris, Northumberland, Durham and Newcastle initially) anyone attending these workshops will literally be taken on a journey - through the art, culture, food and drink of the area we're studying. Technique is one thing - we'll cover it - but soaking in the sounds, smells, movement and vibrancy of a location is another. For example, we won't just take pretty pictures in Venice. We'll eat 'cicchetti', examine the architecture and art, set up in St Mark's Square and shoot professional models with portable studio lighting at midnight.

That's not just a photo workshop - it's a Photo Journey.

The aim is to create workshops and learning experiences you'll remember for the rest of your life. Whether it's in the UK or abroad, for one day or more, you'll have images to take home like nothing you've ever shot and an experience with like-minded enthusiasts that you'll cherish forever.

This is not something I've undertaken lightly. The last 12 months has seen attendees on my workshops shoot TV stars and nationally-published models, learn professional photography techniques and create shots like never before. Our feedback has been overwhelming, with one corporate client declaring it was 'the best workshop we've ever attended'.

With absolutely zero promotion so far, we've already half-filled our Black and White Darkroom workshop in Newcastle.

For more information, check out the website at www.photo-journeys.co.uk, call me on 0191 3845600 or email me. Your own Photo Journey is waiting.

Dilbert cartoons always manage to mingle the agonies of workplace reality with the ecstasies of humour. This one was posted on Alex Chase's TEFLtastic blog.

Beneath the smirk there lurks a home truth: there are workplace powers and principalities that do not see the value of ongoing training. Then there is the fact that in an area where experts are self-taught and self-teaching, formal training may not present the answer.

As the t42 online, self-access training course in Web 2.0 for TESOL teachers evolves, I am curious to see how many will take the plunge into online self-education. My research data depend on their willingness to at least give it a try.
