Tracking Bird Migration (broadcast Friday, October 9th, 2009)

The weather's getting chilly, and birds up north are embarking on their yearly trek down to warmer climes. Geese head south for the winter, and each spring the swallows return to Capistrano - but how? Some species of birds undertake multi-thousand mile journeys, stopping off at key locations along their routes. In this hour, we'll talk about how birds make their migratory journeys, and how scientists are trying to study their travels. We'll take a look at how some birds use magnetic fields as flight maps, and how scientists track their routes -- with radar, sound, heat sensing, and even telescopes aimed at the moon. We're broadcasting from Ithaca, New York this week, as the guests of WEOS. Tune in!

I've been testing out PFHoe, an inexpensive 3D tracking application. I shot a short shaky handheld video of my edit desk, tracked it in PFHoe, then brought the tracking data into Cinema 4D where I added and animated a little brick-like object.

A box for life is an initiative by the Columbia sportswear company to promote the reuse of boxes used to ship purchases made from their online store. The programme allows consumers to track the path and life of their boxes through Columbia's “A Box Life” website. Customers can enter a box's unique tracking number or QR code and see where it's been, how far it has travelled and find out about the other people who have passed the box on. In just over one month after launch in 2009, over 66% of all Columbia's orders were being shipped in reused boxes.

Could something like this work for Very?  It might be an interesting way to build upon the promise of ‘social shopping’ by combining the physical packaging of deliveries with an online experience.  Plus if Columbia’s stats are to be believed, it’s an environmental win too.

Figuring out your funnels is one of the most important things you can do to increase your quantitative understanding of your website. It's critical to get the starting measurements - the dropoff and conversion rates - before you change anything.  That's the only way you can know the effect of the changes you make. By constantly tweaking and measuring, you should be able to really improve your number of conversions.

Mixpanel has a set of functions that can be really useful for a company in the Web. While I still had no chance to compare their functionality to what Google Analytics provides, other than being real-time, I'm planning to spend some more time playing with it.

Mixpanel has a free 10K "data points" account (http://mixpanel.com/pricing) which is sorta confusing for a person like me. I'm more like thinking in visits, page views or things like that. But thanks to Tim Trefren from Mixpanel, who explained this to me:

"A data point is counted every time you track a visitor action. So, in terms of pageviews/month - if you track one event per page, you will use exactly the same number of data points as pageviews."

And, well, Mixpanel wouldn't be something you'll use to put on every page (like you can do with Google Analytics). You'd want to put it only on subset of them, linking to specific actions. Or you will probably use Mixpanel's API to assign "data points" to some triggers in your Web application' actions. This is, by the way, could be also a pretty useful feature.
