My friend, John Fenastil shares what we've experienced when serving communion at Friendship Park and why we believe what we have now is not enough. More on John's work here: http://www.foundation4change.org/

If you have not heard, the redesign of Friendship Park has been completed. It is disappointing. No human contact is allowed to be made through the fences and only 25 people at a time are allowed up to the monument. It looks more like a prison set up, or cattle coral than the beautiful memorial it once was.

My greatest concern continues to be what the continued actions and policies of the Department of Homeland Security and Border Patrol do that insinuate an inherent illegal nature of people of Latin American descent. Some have said, that this an exaggeration. To those, I say, you are blind, naive or ignorant. This is what has happened and continues to. We are held captive by our own mindset. I am primarily concerned with how Christians engage this issue in San Diego.

Visit FriendshipPark.org and consider joining the vigil on Monday (information on the site) and partnering with Christians for Comprehensive Immigration Reform in changing the tide.

Dr. Soong-Chan Rah explains how this captivity I spoke of above happens very well in the video below (specifically 7:00 and on):

The first morning I was in Tijuana, I was up early as usual and sat back reading as the sun rose and illuminated the stair. I watched it for seemingly a long time until it reached a point of 'glorious glow' and I had to grab my camera.

I made several exposures, first with the normal and then with my wide lens, and chose the image out of the wide lens as I preferred the feel of this square cropping compared to the more literal, rectangular filled-frame crop.

There's something about the way the forms and shapes of the walls, stair, and the window's bright rectangle with that shining light all interact to elicit a feeling of peace and silence that reaches out of this photo for me. I find it very satisfying.

I was in Tijuana for a week, visiting friends and family there to celebrate my partner's birthday and the birthday of a friend's four year old son. It seemed there were at least a dozen parties although I know there were only a couple ... :-)

I was in a most un-photographically oriented mood, needed a rest, and ended up taking only a few photographs. But I still carried a camera with me almost all the time ... habit dies hard. At one of the evening parties this lovely woman gave me the gift of a great smile when she saw me pull out the camera. It was very dim, I didn't really have much hope that I'd get anything decent: I had just enough time to focus and squeeze the shutter release to capture her look.

A good reason to always have a camera with me! :-)

Saludos!
Y comentarios bien recibidos..

Over 350 people killed since September in Tijuana, including decapitations. Mostly drug cartel related, but it is oddly not covered much in the news - I guess it's not as psychopathically sensational as the crazy Mumbai terrorism.
