(IsraelNN.com) Seventy-nine percent of Israel's Jewish public disagrees with the Goldstone report's claim that the IDF committed war crimes in Operation Cast Lead in Gaza, according to a new survey by Tel Aviv University. Only 5% of the Arab sector disagreed with the war crimes claim.

The poll found that Israeli Jews familiar with the Goldstone report's main conclusion were almost unanimous in the opinion that the report was biased against the IDF: 61% of the Jews were aware of Goldstone's major finding, and 93.5% of these believed the report was biased. This opinion crossed political lines between Right and Left. The Jewish public is divided on the question of whether the government was right not to cooperate with the Goldstone committee. 46% thought it was right to do so, 20% believed it was mistaken and 34% did not know. The pollsters estimated that those who favored cooperation with the committee did so because they believed that cooperation with the committee could have softened its findings.

Among the Arab public in Israel, only 6% thought Israel's decision not to cooperate was right. 22% said it was wrong and about 70% had no opinion.

Asked whether Hamas's transfer of a video of soldier-hostage Gilad Shalit improved the chances of success in the negotiations for his freedom, 50% of the Jewish public said that it did not increase the chances, but nor did it decrease them. 37% said it increased the chances and 4% said it reduced them.

SCP Vitalife is ramping up what has proven to be a winning strategy of connecting the U.S. and Israeli medical industries.

The firm, which has offices near Philadelphia and Tel Aviv, used a $50 million fund, closed in 2003, to back three Israeli medical-device makers that have been acquired by U.S. companies: MediGuide Inc., bought by St. Jude Medical Inc. in December; Colbar LifeScience Ltd., which merged with Johnson & Johnson in 2006; and SightLine Technologies Ltd., snapped up by Stryker Corp., also in 2006.

That success enabled the firm to more than triple the size of its next fund, which closed at $180 million in March of 2008. As a result, it will be able to claim larger stakes in its Israeli and U.S. companies. While the firm held less than 10% of MediGuide, for example, it will now be able to take stakes of 20% or more, according to Partner Wayne Weisman.

Often, the firm finds opportunity in technologies originally developed for the military. The founders of MediGuide, for example, miniaturized a targeting technology used in fighter-jet cockpits to develop a navigation system used during minimally invasive medical procedures.

SCP is more than a financier. To keep its portfolio-company executives focused on product development, the firm takes the lead in striking business deals on their behalf. The partners negotiated agreements between MediGuide and companies such as Boston Scientific Corp. and Medtronic Inc., for example.

“Our management teams are very innovative and good at building a product,” Weisman said. “We tell them, ‘You continue to do that, and we’ll continue to do strategic deals for you.’”

SCP Vitalife is a combination of SCP Partners, of Wayne, Pa., and Vitalife, based just outside Tel Aviv.  Its former members include Israeli Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Ehud Barak, who was a partner of SCP Partners from 2001 to 2007.
