Watch this cool video of him riding on the West Side bikepath in Manhattan. It's a place we spend a lot of time on and echo his sentiments of riding. He talks about bike-friendly cities and also suggests NYC puts the West side Highway underground " if you want to keep the damn highway". Nice!
I had an odd moment recently where, in an odd way, I met myself. It evolved from a conversation with a new friend in which this person's frustrations, attitudes, and concerns were a direct carbon copy of my own. It's a startling thing, hearing your own thoughts directly voiced back to you. And it was uplifting because with an unquestionable confidence with what I saw in this person I was able to honestly reassure them and indirectly my own self in the process. And I said to them "Everything is going to be alright".
Yes, it's the name of this blog but for a reason I've never fully explained. At the end of the day, when times are their most tough, it's the only words I want to hear. I've learned it's not just myself who needs to hear it, but everyone. They are words of great power and comfort that so many of us need to hear and so few do. Everything is going to be alright is a daily blog for a reason. A variation of these words first had an effect on me back in high school when I was watching a movie I had loved since a child. It was The Survivors from 1983 starring Walter Matthau and Robin Williams. To many it's a throwaway comedy while to others it's not even on their radar. But for me it's one of my very favorite movies and contains what may be one of my favorite endings of all time. There comes a point when the Williams character faces a breakdown, having lost everything important to him and his belief in something better coming his way. It's a fascinating scene for what is a broad comedy but the Williams' desperation and the concern on Matthau's face for his friend is always heartbreaking. Watch the scene below, beginning at the 2:51 mark. The Talking Heads song This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody) is one of my favorite songs of all time and from what I gather from the countless covers it's meaningful to a great number of people also, rising in the ranks of comfort songs alongside classics like Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah. And I feel it can only be because it's a song that tells you there's somewhere/someplace for you at the end of the day. We're all looking for that variation of what we consider home. Everytime I hear it brings tears to my eyes.
As you listen to the song today, taken from the Stop Making Sense live version, consider what you hear and read the lyrics listed below. And if no one else tells you in some way today then let the song tell you "Everything is going to be alright. It is. And whenever you need it to hear it, this where I'll be. That friend I assured the other day has given me an new inspiration and has reignited an idea I have been meaning to write for some time now. Can you guess what the title is?
