Newcastle will be taking 7000 fans to Barnsley this weekend. I'd like someone to name another club in this country, from any league, that can say they have an away following like NUFC. This is exceptional even by our standards!

I've been searching for a decent and, most importantly, simple wiki solution now for the past few weeks. I needed something easy to use and manage for Snaggr's documentation. All of the potential software I found were either too bloated or too shithouse to use.

Maintaining documentation using a simple medium with a decent built-in search and suggest system is pretty important. Especially when it comes to writing pages upon pages of instructions and standards for something that's constantly changing and growing. I shouldn't have to think about how to use the software, I just want to fucking post shit and easily organize it.

Even though I'm on a pretty tight, self-imposed, deadline for the API, I actually took the some time off yesterday and began writing my own wiki solution on top of the Kohana framewok. Three hours into it I decided to take a small break and search around on the net for other APIs I could potentially integrate into Snaggr. I happened upon a nice little service named Ember.

According to Ember it's:

"... the best way to share your design inspiration with the world - from webpages to screenshots, design to illustration, Ember is built for creatives looking to build an online design scrapbook."

Ok.

Well, the screenshot and illustration part caught my attention and I quickly discovered they provide a simple API. Unfortunately, according to it's online documentation, it doesn't support text-based search, but that's besides the point of this post. I noticed that Ember's support documentation is externally hosted by another service; Tender Support.

Apparently, it's by the same guys who created Lighthouse, which is an issue tracking system I used to use. I really liked working with Lighthouse and figured if it's by the same guys, Tender Support must be alright as well. I signed up for the 30 trial and began working.

Tender pretty much has everything I need to get the documentation up and running quickly. It's also very simple manage all your data. It even has built-in discussion forums for support and feedback as well as issue tracking. This is perfect for API support when things go wrong. So, what the hell, I liked it so much signed up for the basic plan.

A very large chunk of the API documentation has already been completed and I'm hoping to get most of it done by this weekend. Hopefully, if all goes well, I can get a few people together to begin testing the API out.

Stoked!

Yesterday I read a very interesting post by Silvia Tolisano (@langwitches on Twitter) where she explains that as a teacher trying to implement 21st century teaching, you can often feel as you are in your own bubble"floating in a different dimension or even on a completely different planet"! In her post, she refers to a German saying “Allein auf weiter Flur stehen” which means that "one is walking a lonely hallway with no one around or even running away as they see you approach". This is exactly how I often feel in school. I mean, my school is deeply lacking technology but even though, I know that technology is not the only mean to become a 21st century teacher. It is all about sharing and collaborating, which you can do even if you don't have the latest technology at your fingertips. I feel that I am only/ mostly sharing good practice with my wonderful PLN on Twitter, Google Reader, Facebook, now starting on Google Wave, but very rarely in school!

Silvia Tolisano along with her Twitter network has created this wonderful picture which exactly describes my feeling at the moment.

"There are three ways to contribute to this image by adding keywords describing how the inside and outside of YOUR bubble looks like.

  1. Leave the keywords as a comment on this blog post
  2. Leave a comment on the image’s Flickr page
  3. Send a Tweet to @langwitches"
I am still looking for some new words to add to the picture but all the ones I have been thinking of so far are already on it!

Yesterday, I also read a similar post by Shelly Terrell (@shellterrell on Twitter) about educators and what she believes sharing and collaborating can bring. She takes the example of this "educator from Nepal who uses one computer in his house to help the teachers in his village access the information other educators are sharing for free."If someone in Nepal with very scarce access to technology can share information, why can't we?
So, I have decided to take action and my goal is to set up a collaborative club in my school where teachers can meet and share ideas, resources, good practice.... I need to think about it but I really want to start something so that we feel we are part of a community supporting each other.

What about you? How do you feel?

The concept behind a mentorship is brilliant:

  • The mentee has access to an invaluable resource: someone to go to for advice/support/general input, who is experienced in the industry.
  • The mentor has the opportunity to help shape the mentee's career path and gain satisfaction from seeing him/her develop as an individual.

I spoke with my mentor yesterday at an event and we had a great chat about our recent progress, long-term goals and life in general. I really appreciate the time and effort that my program took to develop and maintain this mentorship program. But I think mentorships should be more widely implemented..

Mentorship programs should be mandatory in schools.

Every student can benefit from this. Most are lost at least at one point in time about "what they want to do when they grow up", or what they seek to achieve in life, and I think the extra guidance and support from a mentor could really help the individual.  Even for the fortunate(?) few that know what they want to do at in early stage, the mentor would be able to help them get there.

Support from family and friends is always nice, but they may not be knowledgeable about the industry of interest, and it helps to hear advice from a insider's perspective. While there will probably be a small cost to establish a mentorship network, I don't think it would be difficult to find mentors who want to help students, and the small cost would be well worth the taxpayers' money in the long-term.

It might also benefit society as a whole, if mentors help mentees stay focused and steer clear of negative influences (e.g. drug abuse). Dropout rates may decrease. Motivation levels and academic performance might increase. A (healthy) mentorship would be beneficial for every industry:  entrepreneurship, business, arts, sports...you name it.  The world (or country) would be a more inter-connected place than it already is.

In a broader sense, companies should consider them too. Many already do, and I think it's important that the remaining firms implement it as well. Leadership skills and job satisfaction would likely improve, and company succession plans would be stronger. In essence, it helps improves the communication between middle/senior management and entry level employees, making the organizational structure flatter and more efficient.

In all the above points, I mention the great benefits of a mentorship. There are certainly disadvantages as well - potential competition, confidentiality (where do you draw the line?), and so on, but I think the positives outweigh the negatives by a great deal.

Some inspiring quotes on mentorship that I'd like to share:

  • "Mentoring is a brain to pick, an ear to listen, and a push in the right direction." — John Crosby
  • "The unselfish effort to bring cheer to others will be the beginning of a happier life for ourselves." — Helen Keller
  • "We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give." — Winston Churchhill

What do you think about mentorships in general?

Have you ever been in a mentor-mentee relationship? If so, did you find it useful?

Should mentorships be implemented in a wider basis?
