Embrace, be humbled by tempations that remain steadfast...

With the passing of summer into fall, I have decided to speak on my summer album.
Each summer an album hits me and kind of just fits into my memories of that summer. This year it is the wonderful, beautiful, lovely, gorgeous Gather, Form & Fly by the great North Carolina band Megafaun.
I saw them live with another great NC band, Bowerbirds. It was one of the best concerts I've been to, and I'm hoping they show up round these parts again.
Anyway, to the album.
It is a mishmash album in all the best ways. You have straight folk songs like "The Longest Day" and folk rockers like "The Fade", which stand out as the two most accessible songs on the album, and would draw anyone that enjoys music in, I would figure. At the first few listens, one might enjoy these songs the most. They're easy to access and they go down like a really great beer. But the more you listen, the better things get. The two real gems on this album, in my humble opinion, are "Impressions of the Past" and "Columns". I literally really saw the greatness in "Columns" about 3 minutes ago.
"Impressions of the Past" is a multi-themed romp that almost introduce 30 seconds of lyrics. But don't ignore the other five minutes. If you really listen, they're wonderful.
"Columns" ends with this great noise section that really makes the tune. Many tunes on this album do that, but Columns really does it well. It's a 3 minute song then you've got 2 minutes of very pleasant ambient noise.
This isn't an album review though; just some of my thoughts on a really really really well made album.
It has sufficiently wrapped itself around me this summer to keep me warm this winter, and I have a feeling it'll hold up just as well (if not better) through the winter months.
Go get this.
