Dear City of Winchester, you convert streets that have been one-way for 50 years....and you FAIL.

Example....you mark the road pavement near intersections (such as my house) with white "slashes"  to indicate "no parking." Fine. However you neglected to paint the curbs yellow to inform those citizens that are not as savvy not to park on them. FAIL.

You also fail to tell the City Police that in fact these pavement painted "slashes" are designated NO PARKING. FAIL.

At this time, there is a vehicle in direct violation of this (because I don't want to be responding to a wreck by my bedroom). I notified the Police who responded and agreed that this vehicle was in fact causing a hazard, but however givin that the legal side of this is a "yellow curb" violation and that doesn't exist, she could not enforce any parking restrictions. FAIL.

I've emailed the City Super of Public Works (we're on a first name basis) to seek some clarification. It seems that there is a disconnect between this paving, new sidewalk, 2-way street fiasco and the Police that actually have to deal with it and enforcement. FAIL.

....and from speaking with Officers they are none too please with the parking or the 2 way conversion. It's caused problems and 3 accidents in front of my house since the switch over. Before, we had NONE. FAIL.

Oh, did I mention the blazing new street lights that turn night into luminous stark white day???!! FAIL.

That's my next post.

A stretch of Interstate 10 that runs above North Claiborne could be ripped out to usher in more green space and light rail transit.

Removing that two-mile stretch of the I-10 expressway is part of the city's masterplan, but officials said it would take hundreds of millions of dollars and several years.

A few weeks ago, my friend sent me a link to an article from Yale Daily News. I was a bit confused as to why she was sending me a link to Yale's news website, but I checked it out anyway. The article was about the Bladderball. My friend had been at Yale and actually saw the return of the Bladderball game to Yale's campus on October 10th.

The game was originally banned 27 years ago, but somehow it reappeared this year. It was a tradition that Bladderball was played on the weekend of Yale's football game against Dartmouth. The video below will give you a better idea of what the game entails, but a huge ball (this year's was six feet) is bounced around by a huge crowd of Yale students. Teams are made of students from each individual college, who fight to get the bladderball back to their respective colleges. Nothing stops the flow of the game, even if that means taking the game to New Haven's streets.

Soon after I read Yale's article about the Bladderball and saw pictures, I considered how these students defied American society's rules about space and order in streets. Streets are meant for motorized vehicles and bicycles, and pedestrians are only allowed to walk on them when given permission by authorities or when walking on a crosswalk. These students were definitely not given any permission to move their game out into the street. They used the street as their playground.

Streets are also meant to have a relative amount of order. That is why there are different lanes, street signs, etc. The Bladderball game caused great disorder. Traffic was stopped or slowed down and people were running in every and any direction.

I found it interesting that in the first few seconds of the Youtube video above, a bystander asked a police officer if there was a law against the Bladderball game. This is an example of how our society has laws about the use of specific spaces, and people refer to these laws when they feel they are being violated. I was surprised that it took a while for the police to really intervene. They directed traffic, but according to the Yale article, the game started at 4 pm and the police did not start forcing students off of the street until 4:24 pm.

Wonder what it would be like if Bladderball came to Ball State University and rolled down McKinley?
