MO Love - Springfield to Kansas City
After a tour of the ridiculously huge Bass Pro Shop, where Sarah Palin stopped while doing bang up campaigning in Springfield and I posed for a cheesy gun photo, headed to Anton's Coffee Shop for blunch (yes, blunch) around 11am. Had the 937 omelet (turkey, spinach, mushrooms, cheddar) with egg whites and choice side of grits. (By the way, did I mention Brad Pitt is from Springfield? Yes, I care deeply.) Full and digesting, departed for Kansas City. It's about a 3-4 hour drive from Springfield to KC.
En route to KC, enjoyed some [more] interesting signage, and not just for "God loves you" as is evidently popular in these regions. Feeling cheesy again, pulled into the Osceola Cheese Company which was right on highway 13. They must have had over 100 varieties of cheese and you could sample most of them by popping a toothpick in one of their many sample containers containing cubes of the cheese you were checking out. Some flavors included blueberry white cheddar, apricot apple muenster, fajita, bacon smoked, and many others, often spicy or fruity. We bought a few snacks including low fat turkey sticks, flax corn chips, beef jerky, smoked string cheese, and a potluck bag of cheese cubes. "Ewe's in the Country" they said. Indeed. More road ahead, belly satisfied with an option other than fast fat food.
DQed, then down for the eve in Springfield, MO
Staying with some real friendly folks (family of my friend) in Springfield, MO this evening. A lovely home cooked dinner including venison burgers, corn on the cob, other local grown veggies, and some ales I hadn't tried before. Saw a baby bat on their back porch which was lost (we set him free).
Also admit to a virgin experience by stopping at DQ (Dairy Queen) on the ride to Springfield as I was famished. Ate fried bad stuff. Gulped strawberry milkshake. Passed out cold after and woke up painfully needing water. What do they put in that food?? Must be something that makes you binge eat then pass out so you can't exercise. No wonder america is fat. <cringe> I think I gained 5 pounds so far on this trip with pit stops, beer, and sitting on my ass in a car. If true, will ditch the extra girth on the second half but will not ditch the beer...yet.
