Days like today when it's snowing in the Tri-Cities, render solar chargers useless. Some solar chargers are dual mode and will retain their charge so that they can charge your device whenever you'd need it without being dependent upon the sun. Check out this write up about RAYvolution brand chargers: http://bit.ly/6gs4qy or check out the SOLIO brand at Sprint on East Stone Dr in Kingsport, TN next to Applebees. "The SunCatcher solar thermal system, developed by Tessera Solar and built by Stirling Energy Systems at the Sandia National Laboratories’ National Solar Thermal Test Facility, captures solar energy at 31.25 percent efficiency, the highest ever achieved by this technology. Each of SunCatcher’s 38-foot-wide dishes collects enough heat energy to run a Stirling engine that can then generate 25 kilowatts of electric power. The system will fulfill two of the world’s largest solar contracts, providing a planned 1,600 megawatts to Southern California by 2014. It improved on its predecessor with a new design that makes each dish substantially lighter and cheaper to manufacture."

Powering the UK solely using its own renewables would take up an area of land comparable to the size of the country, according to the new chief scientific adviser to the Department for Energy and Climate Change.

Speaking at an event organised by the Institute’s London and South East Branch and held at its London premises in October, Prof. David MacKay showed that even a windfarm the size of Wales would only supply around a sixth of the UK’s power requirements.

A dose of realism form the author of Sustainable Energy: Without the Hot Air. "I just want an energy plan that works," said Prof. MacKay.

EXCERPT:

“Until solar cellphones were introduced, charging a phone in remote areas, off the electricity grid, entailed a bone-jarring journey to the nearest town, where the phone battery could be charged at kiosks run on generators for relatively hefty fees.”

Kudos to the gang at Wired for making this story easy to understand. One thing we should all take away from this is that the Chinese are deadly serious about solar power and seem to be intent on conquering the field, despite the deep recession in that industry. For all the noise about limitless, green energy I just don't see the factories tolling up over here to make it happen. And that's a shame. Can't we build these things and also drill, baby, drill at the same time?

During the past week or so I've heard a lot about Google's plan to reduce the cost of solar power. Surface journalism has called this a benevolent act that will lower our electricity bills and other reporters have said that this is a strategic way to earn positive PR points. I give both opinions credit, but it seems strange that no one has even mentioned how important this is to Google's business.

Is this so apparent to everyone that it isn't worth mentioning, or have we overlooked the important part? As it stands, Google spends more than $2 million dollars per month on electricity. Of course they want to research lower cost energy consumption. It'll only help business.

Solar panel technology is slimming down and research at Niagara College has its eye on thin film solar cells. Less may not be considered more in terms of electric output, but fabricating such slight solar panels makes their application nearly limitless. Really, it's all about surface area rather than focusing on developing the most efficient unit. For example, existing windows at a hospital or office building could be coated with this technology, rather than a complete overhaul and switch-over to a new system.

How thin are these things? Human hair thickness varies in diameter from 20 to 180 microns depending on genetics, but 80 to 100 microns can be considered average. The test cells at the college weigh in at a lean six microns, clearly in the ultra-super-light-sneeze-and-and-you-lose-it weight class. There's a fine balance in selecting materials to layer, and it's only a matter of time before the winning formula emerges.

Just 496,905 square kilometers. That's really nothing compared to the total world area: Less than the surface of Spain (504,030 square kilometers) covered with solar panels, distributed across deserts and areas with almost 24/7 sun, all year around.
