Have you ever heard of binge eating bulimic Seagulls?  They actually ate the crickets, went for a little drink in creek, then vomited them up and went back for more.  This went on for 3 WEEKS until all the crickets were gone!

For those of you who don't know this story, the mormon pioneers just settled in the Salt Lake Valley (summer of 1848), they were into their 2nd year settling there in the valley, and they just went through a very hard winter, and desperately needed these crops to grow or they would starve.  Drought, and late spring frosts killed lots of their crops already, and now the crickets were getting ready to finish off what they had left.

check out the quote:

“We were fearfully alarmed, for all of a sudden, circling above our … fields, appeared great flocks of screaming gulls. ‘A new plague is descending upon us,’ was our first thought. Down the gray and white birds swooped in hundreds, then in thousands, uttering shrill … cries as they pounced upon [the crickets]. … Then a strange thing happened. As soon as they had gorged themselves, they sailed over to a nearby stream, took a few sips of water, disgorged [vomited] and returned to join their screaming companions. All our people stood in wonderment! Our prayers were answered” (quoted in Grant, p. 446).

The seagulls came back day after day for about three weeks. They ate crickets until all the crickets were gone. The Saints knew their prayers had been answered in a miraculous way. They were grateful that their crops and their lives had been spared.

So I have entered into an alliance with Sea-Gull of China and Soprod of Switzerland, and will be offering their movements. Unless we offer a special Vintage piece, we will NOT be offering ANY ETA based watches. This is not saying I am limiting the range to these companies; other options are still being investigated.

While movement choice, as both technically and price driven, it is more, an ethical choice.

Great post about making a movements choice by Orange Watch Company (ORANGE). What problems do small watches manufacturers face from the very first steps of watchmaking.

Starting as they mean to go on, Bristol Old Vic's new artistic director, Tom Morris, and executive director, Emma Stenning, begin with a wonderfully audacious idea. Bristol Jam is the first British festival of improvised performance and will cover all art forms, from classical drama to clowning to storytelling. In nine days of exploration and playfulness, local and international artists will be acting spontaneously, often encouraging audience participation. Check the BOV website for developments, but confirmed companies and artists include The Factory with Hamlet (Fri to 18 Oct) and The Seagull (17-18 Oct), plus female clown Angela de Castro, comedian Phil Kay, beatboxer Beardyman, and the hugely enjoyable Showstopper! The Improvised Musical (21-22 Oct), in which a full-length musical takes shape from audience suggestions.

Old Vic, Fri to 24 Oct, visit bristololdvic.org.uk

This brown pelican and seagull remind me of the Mutt and Jeff comic strip. Years ago that reference was commonly made when a pair were tall and short. Anyway, these two birds were sociably perched beside the Bon Secour River.
