It's super smooth to do a screen capture in Mac:

1. command + shift + 3 to capture the whole screen.
2. command + shift + 4 > click + drag to capture part of the screen.
3. command + shift + 4 > spacebar > click to capture a window.

In all cases, a png image will appear on your Desktop.

The people at Digeus provided me with a copy of SnapIt Screen Capture Software to review. This is what I learned.

1. SnapIt is snappy. It starts up quickly (after a hassle-free typical install). It doesn't slow down my machine. It runs in a little Taskbar icon.

2. It can be set up to mimic behaviour 2 above:

2.1.Press Prt Scrn and your mouse pointer will change to crosshairs. Click and drag the portion of the screen that you want to capture.
2.2. Right-click the SnapIt icon in the Taskbar and click Save As.
2.2.1. Or, set up the Preferences to autosave the image wherever you want - I save mine as pngs on my Desktop, mimicking my Mac.

3. And that's about it. SnapIt doesn't do 1 and 3 like the Mac does.

3.1. But I'm happy - SnapIt allows me to capture my Twitter Serendipities well enough! Give it a go - it's free to try.

I recently received the attached email (names blurred out to protect those concerned)

In it, I am told I can get a free licence for a product if I add a link to my blog.

While it's nice that somebody thinks my blog has a value, this is definitely not the way to get me to endorse a product.
I know nothing about this product and I'm certainly not going to endorse something without having found it useful myself.
I use a rather excellent piece of Screen Capture Software called LittleSnapper, which makes it easy to grab and organise images, blur out text, etc. I used it making the image for this post.

If you want me to endorse your product, here's the steps I would recommend.

1. Convince me why I would find the product useful.
2. Give me access/the ability to try it out.
3. Wait a while, and ask me if I found it useful.
4. If I did, ask me if I would consider writing about it.

If I find something of value, I may well choose to share that.

And you may be able to increase the likelihood of me writing about it with some reward - if we're already at step 4 - ie I've decided I like it and am open to sharing my experience.

But the reward has to be of value. A license for something I've not used is not a reward. And this email gives me no incentive to care about the product.

On Windows, I press the Prnt Scrn key, open Paint, paste in the image, save as jpg, then crop as needed. Very messy. Is there an easier way? Maybe I'm just being a Windows n00b and doin it rong. Feel free to correct me, if I am.

In the mean time, I'm going to review SnapIt Screen Capture Software. I'll see how it goes and let ya know.

I was messing around with a database for a new subdomain. And for some reason all other databases on my server were rendered inaccessible in the process. Sill waiting for a support response.

As I mentioned in the video, Jing can also do video capture (up to 5mins)

It’s completely free for basic use, and works on both Mac and PC.

Here is a demo video that i created for a client of ours for our Analytics software for Websites

aviary screenshots Do you want to capture a full screenshot of a web page without installing any software or browser extensions?

Well, here’s a simple trick.

Open the web page that you want to capture, go to the address bar of the browser and type "aviary.com/" just before the http:// part of the URL.

For instance, if your web address is something like http://labnol.org, the new URL will become aviary.com/http://labnol.org - hit Enter and there you have an editable screenshot image of that page.

Or add this bookmarklet to the bookmarks bar and you can even save yourself from typing aviary.com every time you want to capture a screenshot.
