Simulator Shows Danger of Texting Behind the Wheel (from WDTN)

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - Many people think they have skills behind the wheel, but when it comes to texting and driving...no one wins. Teens like Katie Glander say texting and driving is quickly becoming a way of life.
"Um, I have seen people texting while driving."
Teen driver Kasidy Muncy admits she's guilty of it.
"I acutally have done it myself now that I have a touchscreen phone I can't do it as much."
According to to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, drivers younger than 20 had the highest distracted-driving fatality rate among all age groups last year. The NHTSA said nearly six-thousand people died last year as a result of distracted driving.
How dangerous is it? I found a virtual driving course on line that forces the user to go through gates by pushing a number on the keypad. Once you add the texting part, it all goes awry. I'm hitting gates and can't keep myself in the lane.
You might ask yourself, how realistic is that? When you're in a car you're not trying to use a keyboard or a mouse while you're trying to text and drive at the same time. Instead, I used my blackberry to send a text message to somebody. I thought the familiarity of my own phone would help me out. Unfortunately, I still hit the barriers and could not text successfully.
"Texting and driving is as bad as driving drunk," Jeff Caldwell, a driving instructor at PDS driving school said.
"I mean you just see pictures all the time on the news where people are running into other people because they're paying attention to that phone and not up where they should be."

I found this to be absolutely nerve-wracking. I took a long time to complete because I purposely tried to focus on the gates and not the cell phone in the beginning of the game. As I tried to figure out what to do to respond I found that I would easily be distracted from the gate numbers.
I don't know if it would have been easier with a regular cell phone than the on screen version, but I can guarantee that I was fully distracted at times.
I never saw the grey lady.

Substandard action, that is people/person, is the major cause of accident. 98% of accident cause is actually substandard action. In this matter, behavior based safety is much more important to prevent accident.
Fit Testing Workshop
Course #2This two (2) day workshop will provide detailed information and "hands-on" experience for conducting qualitative and quantitative respirator fit testing. Each student will be provided a variety of respirators including filtering facepieces, elastomeric half, and full facepiece respirators for participation in fit testing workshops. A combination of lecture and "hands-on" testing in the presence of a trained and experienced instructor will be used to help participants learn how to conduct respirator fit testing to satisfy regulatory requirements. Hands-on fit testing will include qualitative and quantitative methods. Lectures, demonstrations, and workshops are available on all OSHA accepted fit test methods: Saccharin sweetener, Bitrex, ambient aerosol (TSI PortaCount), controlled negative pressure (OHD Fit Tester 3000), banana oil, and irritant smoke fit testing. Class size will be limited to ensure a favorable faculty to student ratio. Students will learn how to set-up, operate, maintain, troubleshoot, analyze, and interpret fit test results. Where appropriate, students will learn how to calibrate testing equipment and record results. All course materials, supplies, equipment, and reference manuals will be provided.
Students will also learn how to disassemble, clean, re-assemble, and inspect respirators for common problems. The manual and workbook are a valuable reference for solving fit testing problems in the future. .
This course uses a combination of lecture and small practicum groups to ensure students have ample time to practice and learn fit testing techniques. The second day provides students sufficient time to concentrate on the particular method(s) of interest to them. A "Hands-On" approach is emphasized in this course. Students will fit test several different model and style facepieces, not just one.
This course is designed to teach fit testing techniques. Dr. McKay and his staff have many years of teaching and practical experience. We don't sell or manufacture respiratory equipment, therefore, our approach is to provide students the information needed to properly conduct fit testing. We have no hidden agenda. The information is presented in an unbiased, understandable, and professional manner. We have developed excellent visual training tools, comprehensive manuals, and provide plenty of equipment to enhance the learning experience. Who Should Attend:
This course is designed for individuals who need to conduct qualitative or quantitative respirator fit testing at their workplace. OSHA regulations are not intended to be cookbooks that tell us how to conduct respirator fit testing.Prerequisites:
No prior fit testing experience is needed, however, prior knowledge of general respirator standards and guidelines equivalent to our "Overview of Respiratory Protection" course is required. Proof of prior training may be requested. Students who do not have at least 7 hours of formal training should consider taking our one day "Overview of Respiratory Protection" training course (or equivalent) in advance.
