Earlier today, the UK Telegraph ran a story “Vatican condemns Hallowe'en as anti-Christian.” You’ve got to drill down 4 paragraphs of sensationalism to get to the source of the claim:

The Vatican issued the warning through its official newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano, in an article headlined "Hallowe'en's Dangerous Messages".

The paper quoted a liturgical expert, Joan Maria Canals, who said: "Hallowe'en has an undercurrent of occultism and is absolutely anti-Christian."

Now there is a fellow named Fr. Joan Maria Canals, CMF, a liturgy official with the Spanish Bishops’ Conference who has been pushing the idea that as Spain appropriates this U.S. holiday it ought to do so in a life affirming way as opposed to celebrating the occult and death. Catholic News Agency wrote about that effort and similar efforts in France and Chile. I expect L’Osservatore wrote a similar report. I’m certain the Pope didn’t comment in the article. Unfortunately, L’Osservatore does not archive their articles, so the first sensational or misrepresentative press piece about any article in L’Osservatore becomes the source – no other source being available.

Then it descends from there. One Spanish priest is quoted in L’Osservatore and soon enough, The Daily Mail blares the headline:

Halloween is 'dangerous' says the Pope as he slams 'anti-Christian' festival

The Mail’s original article has been significantly altered so as to remove the false references to the Pope it originally contained. If you click through, you’ll notice they also toned down the headline. But too late, the American press has picked up on it and is running. We’ve had press inquiries from local affiliates here wanting explanations as to why the Pope is condemning Halloween and what we’re going to do about it.

I think there are two lessons here:

1. If your going to re-report on what another news organization has reported, you should check their sources.

2. If you’re going to be a news source as significant as the Vatican’s newspaper, your articles shouldn’t disappear after 24 hours.

UPDATE

The Times (U.K) takes the cake, combining the aforementioned sensationalism with the ignorant anti-Catholicism now apparently commonplace in England. I lived and worked in London 97-98 and didn't notice much anti-Catholicism, but things must have changed. The article begins, my emphases:

When Victoria Romero, 6, dressed up as a witch for a Hallowe’en party this week she could hardly have imagined that she was provoking the wrath of God by attending a celebration akin to a Black Mass — at least in the eyes of the Vatican and the Roman Catholic Church in Spain.

Wearing skeleton suits, dressing up as vampires, witches or goblins or slapping on fake blood is not far removed from communing with the Devil, according to the country’s bishops.

However, the bishops, with Vatican backing, have reserved their venom for the millions of parents who allowed their children to celebrate this “pagan” festival.

Later in the story we find the sole basis for the charge of Vatican venom against millions of parents:
“Children dress as witches, vampires, ghosts, masks, corpses, skeletons, and parents favour this type of festivity which plays with elements of death,” Father Canals said. “But when a relative dies they prevent them from seeing the dead relative.”

So a very mild and probably true cultural observation by a priest in Spain, when quoted by L'Osservatore, translates to Vatican venom against millions of parents.

Again, "the Vatican" is treated as if it was a hive mind.

If some monsignor ordered spaghetti carbonara for his lunch with a journalist, the "reporter" would write "Vatican Endorses Carbonara."

Did he die or didn't he?  That's the question being posed today about former Black Flag, Suicidal Tendencies, and Danzig drummer Chuck Biscuits and whether or not his death was a hoax.  You can read more info about it here:  http://www.nme.com/news/black-flag/48125  If he did die, then RIP.  If he didn't, well, it's Halloween's Eve and a perfect excuse to upload the shock horror sounds of Danzig.

Rumor is Danzig lives in my neighborhood.  Don't know if this is true but that would be amazing if it was.  I think if I saw him I'd burst into a glorious bellow.

Mother comes from Danzig's self-titled debut album with that awesome album cover that sets you up glory.  Look at that below.  Beautiful!

“Jonathan

Closer Jonathan Papelbon(notes) has been an All-Star for the Boston Red Sox since he came into the league in 2006. He's saved 151 games for the team and is the owner of the record for the most consecutive scoreless innings in the postseason with 26. And now the team is supposedly considering trading him.

ESPN's Steve Phillips said as much in an interview on WEEI radio. He says Papelbon will be used to bring a big bat to Boston, which is good because Jason Bay(notes) supposedly wants to move back to the West Coast, where he has a home in Seattle.

After all, the guy has two more years on his contract and there aren't many good closers that will be available this winter through free agency. If Papelbon does get moved, though, he'll have to choose a new entrance song. He currently arrives at the mound to "I'm Shipping Up to Boston," by the Dropkick Murphys.

Both the premise of this article and its headline annoy the heck out of me. Why? Because it's misleading, and the average person who doesn't look closely enough will assume that complete and utter speculation = proof that the Red Sox are exploring this deal.

Are any Red Sox team sources cited in this story? No. The linked post that is supposed to support the premise that "the team is supposedly considering trading him" doesn't even come close. The team isn't supposedly considering trading Paps... rather, Steve Phillips is saying they SHOULD consider doing this! Big difference, and it doesn't even qualify as a rumor IMO. Yet somehow this is enough to slap on the ridiculous headline. Why not go with something like "ESPN's Phillips: Red Sox Should Trade Papelbon"? At least this would be closer to the truth.

I want to like Yahoo! Sports because it's a nice alternative to the ad-intensive goliath that is ESPN.com. But they're going to need to do better than this if they want to win my eyeballs.

Has Cygnett let the cat out of the bag by publishing info on its new cases ahead of today's Apple event? Matching previous rumors, here the Touch looks to have a built-in camera, while the nano has an elongated screen.

No spec information is listed, but certainly looks believable. We'll find out at 10am. [Cygnett via Crave Asia]

I usually don't partake in this hype, but hey it's a slow morning!

'It's Only Rock and Roll' Rumor Roundup

Tuesday September 08, 2009 12:16 PM EST; Category: iPhone, iPod
Written by Eric Slivka

With Apple's "It's Only Rock and Roll" media event scheduled for tomorrow, months of rumors and speculation are coming together to generate a picture of what may be in store for the event.

New iPods with Camera

A report from mid-May was the first to suggest that the iPod touch and iPod nano would see the addition of digital cameras. Additional confirmation and mockup images of the next-generation iPod nano appeared shortly thereafter, and the new iPod nano is also rumored to carry a wider-aspect (1.5:1) screen ratio.

Over the past several months, a number of third-party case manufacturers have been advertising cases for the next-generation iPod touch and iPod nano designed to accommodate digital cameras on both models, as well as the new iPod nano screen size. Believable images claiming to be a prototype of the new iPod touch were also revealed last month:

Additional word appeared late last month that Apple has contracted for 3.2-megapixel cameras for not only the iPod touch and iPod nano, but also the iPod classic. Finally, iPod resellers have also reported dwindling stocks of existing iPod models and discontinuation of product codes for those models.

Last minute reports from multiple sources claim, however, that Apple has run into production problems with the cameras on the new models. While the issue may delay shipment of the new iPods, an introduction remains very likely for tomorrow's event.

iTunes Store - "Cocktail" and Pre-Cut Ringtones?

Apple has been rumored to be developing "digital album" packages of interactive content, code-named "Cocktail", that the music industry hopes will help spur sales of full albums via iTunes. Major record labels are also rumored to be developing their own competing format.

Another report last week also claimed that Apple has secured the necessary rights to distribute pre-cut ringtones via the iTunes Store as an alternative to the custom-designed ringtones currently available for many tracks in the store.

iTunes 9

A report from early last month suggested that iTunes 9, likely to be introduced at tomorrow's event, will offer support for Blu-ray media, as well the ability to organize iPhone and iPod touch applications within iTunes. Claims of social media integration also surfaced, along with several groups of questionable screenshots.

Other Rumors

- Beatles: While numerous observers have pointed to several Beatles-related product introductions tomorrow as something possibly more than a coincidence, AllThingsD reports that there will be no Beatles-iTunes announcements tomorrow.

- Tablet: Apple's much-rumored tablet computer has been the subject of significant attention in recent months, with Apple CEO Steve Jobs reportedly focusing nearly all of his attention on the project since his return from a medical leave of absence in late June. Despite some suggestion that the tablet could see an introduction as early as this month, the vast majority of reports claim that it will not be introduced until a later date, likely early in 2010.

- Apple TV: A recent slip in shipping times for the low-end Apple TV has led to speculation that an update to the device could be in store, but sources have indicated that no such announcement will be made at tomorrow's event.

DENVER - SEPTEMBER 21: Brandon Marshall #15 of the Denver Broncos heads to the line of scrimmage the New Orleans Saints during NFL action at Invesco Field at Mile High on September 21, 2008 in Denver, Colorado. The Broncos defeated the Saints 34-32. (Photo by Doug Pensinger/Getty Images)(Photo by Doug Pensinger/Getty Images)

And the rumor clock keeps on ticking.

Three days ago, I suggested Denver Broncos wide receiver Brandon Marshall should be traded to the 49ers for Michael Crabtree and Alex Smith.

Not possible.

Yesterday, I speculated based on a Scout.com rumor that the Broncos could engage in a three team trade that would send Marshall to the Cardinals, Anquan Boldin to the Chiefs, and Matt Leinart to the Broncos.

Not happening.

This morning, I will speculate on yet another Marshall trade rumor, one that seems to have at least a little bit of life to it.

According to Pro Football Talk through Bob Glauber of Newsday, the New York Jets are contemplating a trade that would send wide receiver Brandon Marshall to the Big Apple.

There is no doubt the Jets are in dire need of a premiere wide receiver, but a similar report from the Denver Post thinks this is all just hooplah.

Per the report from Jeff Legwold's Denver Broncos blog, the Jets are unwilling to part with a first round pick, and Legwold thinks the Broncos should stand firm in their asking price of a first and fourth round draft choice.

My question to the Jets would be this, "Why would you even pick up the phone if you are not willing to part with what the Broncos want?"

The Broncos are in no place where they have to trade Brandon Marshall. Has he been a nuisance? Sure, but the Broncos technically can hold on to his rights for the next three years. And if another team wants him, they are going to have to pay top dollar.

So, if the Jets want Marshall bad enough, they will shell out a first and fourth round draft pick, or there likely will be no deal, and the Broncos will move on and try and win football games with their disgruntled receiver.

It is as simple as that.
