GLITTARAZZI’S KELLY ANN COLLINS & E.LUND ENTERTAINMENT PRESENT 'ADULT SWIM: A PHILANTHROPIC POOLSIDE BIRTHDAY SOIREE'

PlayPumps International To Benefit From Pool Party That Will Celebrate Washington Fashion, Celebrity and Philanthropy

Washington, D.C. (July 30, 2009) - This Sunday, August 2nd marks the birthday of Kelly Ann Collins – philanthropist, writer, entrepreneur and founder of Washington-based blog, Glittarazzi at The Liaison Capitol Hill, an Affinia hotel.

To celebrate her big day, Kelly Ann Collins will bring new meaning to the phrase, "save water, drink champagne," by joining forces with E. Lund Entertainment to present "Adult Swim: A Philanthropic Poolside Birthday Soiree." The event will benefit PlayPumps International, a non-profit organization that helps to improve the lives of children and their families by providing easy access to clean drinking water to millions across Africa.

In its fifth week, the Adult Swim series of pool parties has successfully brought together more than 400 Washingtonians each Sunday to experience an extravagant South Beach resort feel of poolside indulgence in our Nation’s Capitol. The weekly event has attracted a wide variety of partygoers – including everyone from models and professional sports players to reality TV show cast members and fashion designers.

"One in six people still don't have access to clean water and sanitation – a living condition that can be linked to 80 percent of sickness in the world," said Kelly Ann Collins, a PlayPumps supporter since 2005.

"Access to clean water is critical for survival and for improving quality of life," she said. "Therefore, my friends and I view it as our responsibility to support PlayPumps in its mission to install 4,000 systems by the end of 2010, providing clean water to nearly 10 million people."

Donations to the cause will grant guests complimentary admission from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. There will also be a raffle featuring items provided by event sponsors – Washington  Sports Club, Glittarazzi, E.Lund Entertainment, Aidah Collection, Dar Be Dar swimwear, i.d. x-change by Igal Dahan and Hair Lounge Salon.

In addition, Cuffs of Love, by i.d. x-change by Igal Dahan – a favorite among celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Paris Hilton and John Mayer – will make its East Coast debut at this Sunday’s event, and Dar Be Dar swimwear (recently featured by Daily Candy) will be on-site with designer Tala Raassi.

For more information about the event, please log on to www.dcpoolparty.com.

I have supported the WHS for years by volunteering performing surgeries for them at their National Capital Area Spay & Neuter Center, and am excited that the first event at our new hospital will support the great work that the Washington Humane Society does in our community."

"We want the event to be family-friendly, as we want to establish a long-term relationship with our clients, their families and their pets. We will host an open house to showcase our new clinic and look forward to serving the Alexandria community, as well as surrounding area.  ” Dr. Nia Perkins said. About Dr. Nia M. Perkins, D.V.M

Dr. Nia M. Perkins is a native of Chicago, Illinois where most of her family still resides. She received her undergraduate degree from Xavier University in New Orleans, Louisiana (her second home) and her DVM degree from Tuskegee University School of Veterinary Medicine in May 2002.

Dr. Perkins came to Alexandria,Virginia right out of veterinary school and has practiced at various clinics in the area. She mainly takes care of dogs, cats, and the occasional pocket pet, but Dr. Vyfhuis is determined to make her more exotics savvy. Although she is not a specialist, Dr. Perkins does have a special interest in skin issues.

In addition to spending time with her four year old son, Jourdan, and their Japanese Chin, "Miles Davis" (in the picture), she loves going to the movies, scanning entertainment blogs (her favorite is theybf.com founded by her sister Natasha!), and just enjoying  friends and family.

About Dr. Elton Vyfhuis, D.V.M.

Dr. Vyfhuis' veterinary career began with a promise from his parents, that he would get a puppy from a family friend.  He begged and pleaded for this puppy, and even though his parents never gave in, his favorite aunt did. She asked him to dog-sit her Chow puppy for a few days, and he never let go! She surrendered the pup, but retained visiting rights.

After that, Dr. Vyfhuis started accumulating pets, including a temperamental cat, an unpredictable dog, a hamster, budgerigar, 5 chickens, 2 rabbits, 2 more cats, 9 more dogs and 2 snakes.

Of course, it takes more than a love of animals to become a veterinarian. When faced with the decision of what degree to pursue as a senior at Banneker High School in Washington, D.C., his interest in medicine, nature, and the art of science made it a "no-brainer".

As an undergraduate at University of Maryland, Eastern Shore, in the honors program for animal science, it was the core pre-vet coursework in which he excelled. "Things come a lot easier when you enjoy doing them".  He graduated from his college a "Super Senior" in 1997.

Dr. Vyfhuis went to vet school at Tuskegee University in Alabama in 1998. He is grateful that Tuskegee stressed hands-on experience, as much as learning the scientific advances in the veterinary field.

"Maybe because my parents resisted giving me a puppy for so long, I still get a thrill out of seeing what species will show up in my exam room."  Dr. Vyfhuis has no children but does have one great dog, "Ubu", a 10 year-old black female chow-lab mix who works as resident greeter. He also has a ball python named

"Sylk," who was rescued from squalor conditions in Tuskegee Alabama in 2000.
"I hope to help as many snakes, birds, rodents, cats, dogs and any other animals as I possibly can".

About The Washington Humane Society

The Washington Humane Society is the oldest animal protection agency in Washington, D.C. Since 1870, WHS’s open door policy has served homeless, lost, and abused animals in DC; providing protection from cruelty, shelter from the elements, and a second chance at a loving home. No call for help goes unanswered, and no animal is ever turned away.

Following up the success of the launch, week 2 of these poolside events kicked off with a pre-opening party for the Green Cup of Polo. The party was a great success. SCREEN ON THE GREEN

PARTNERS ANNOUNCE FILM SCHEDULE, INCLUDES CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE

FREE OUTDOOR FILM FESTIVAL RETURNS TO NATIONAL MALL CELEBRATING ITS 10th YEAR

WHAT:          Washingtonians will gather on the National Mall to kick off the 10th Annual “Screen on the Green” film festival on July 20th when HBO, Comcast, and The Trust for the National Mall  present the 1977 sci fi classic, “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.”   The free outdoor festival will continue with screenings each Monday evening at sunset through August 10th.

WHEN:           Monday, July 20th, 2009, at sunset.  Films will run every Monday through August 10th, 2009.

WHERE:         Each film will be shown on a giant 20' x 40' outdoor screen on the National Mall between 4th and 7th Streets NW.

WHO:             Everyone is invited.  Screen on the Green is free and open to the public.

2009  Schedule:

July 20                        CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND (Sony/Columbia)

Watch the skies!  Richard Dreyfuss embarks on an obsessive quest for answers after witnessing a low-flying UFO.  Legendary French director Francois Truffaut plays a scientist seeking communication with the (friendly?) aliens.  Stephen Spielberg takes us from Mexico to Mongolia, from India to Indiana to show that we earthlings are not alone.  The majestic musical score was Oscar-nominated, but double nominee John Williams lost to himself for “Star Wars.” Pre CGI, “Encounters” is movie magic of the first kind. 132 Min. (1977)

July 27                        DOG DAY AFTERNOON (Warner Bros.)

Sonny (Al Pacino) sets out to rob a Brooklyn bank to pay for his boyfriend’s sex change operation.  The job doesn’t go as planned.  Based on a true-life story, the screenplay won an Oscar and a Writer’s Guild award though reportedly much was improvised.  No matter, “Dog” is great stuff.  Director Sidney Lumet gets the New York flavor just right and Pacino is simply stupendous.  Memorable support comes from Chris Sarandon and the late John Cazale.  All together now…”At-ti-ca!  At-ti-ca!” 125 Min. (1975)

August 3
            ON THE WATERFRONT (Sony/Columbia)

Powerful, man-vs-union-racketeers drama set on the New Jersey docks remains a contenda.  Winner of eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director (Elia Kazan).  Marlon Brando was named Best Actor after being shut out the 3 previous years.  Lee J. Cobb, Karl Malden and Rod Steiger were all nominated for Best Supporting Actor.  All lost.  A very pregnant Eva Marie Saint, however, picked up an Oscar for her effort.  108 Min. (1954)

August 10                   REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE (Warner Bros.)

Landmark tale of teen angst is still disturbing today.  Natalie Wood and James Dean star as the tragic lovers, while Sal Mineo provides sensitive support as the outcast, Plato.  Direction by Nicholas Ray takes full advantage of the wide screen canvas.  111 Min. (1955)

Classic Animation provided courtesy of Warner Bros. Studios.
