A little while back I heard about Help-Portrait, a way to give back to the community using our talents as photographers. I sat on it for a while and eventually signed up after seeing the video below. [youtube:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9tu1XrBn3A] Everyday I'm thankful for the things I have, the people around me, my job, my health, etc. But with the holidays approaching we're reminded that there are those who are less fortunate, whether they don't have a job, no family around, nobody to go home to -- whatever the case may be, there are people who don't have as much to be thankful for as I do. I've often wanted to find a way to give back, in some way, and help someone who needs it. I think Help-Portrait is a great way to do so, and if I can make someone smile by doing something I love, it's win-win! The Northern Virginia/Washington DC chapter of Help-Portrait could use some volunteers, whether they're photographers, people who can do hair/make-up, as well as those willing to bring food, donate books, blankets, clothes, etc. You can find out more and sign up here. We'll be getting together on Thursday night, November 12, at Busboys and Poets in Arlington to plan the official Help-Portrait day, which is Saturday, December 12. You don't need to be a pro (I'm not!), but you do have to be willing to help. If you can help, I hope to see you there! If you can spread the word or know of someone who can help out, please email me at robert@rekphoto.com or direct them to the website above. You can also find Help-Portrait on:

Thank you!

The original was seen on a national television show. This show continues to play through out the world.
The Brown Man must be framed and is discounted because the streacher bars have left slight marks in the painting.

I Rarely Work In Silence

Click

I rarely work in silence. There is always music or talk or something coming over the speakers that are to my right. For some reason, and seemingly out of nowhere I will run across a song that just captures the moment or the emotion of the moment and I put it on replay until I can't listen to it any longer. Well, this is the case with this song, Starving In The Belly of the Whale by Tom Waits. Anyway, listening to the song the other day I realized that I had never attempted to paint a whale in my life (let alone staring in the belly of one) so I figured it was about dang time I gave it a go. Well, I guess that could be said about alot of things that you have never tried before. It's just best to give it a go and hope for the best. Here is to hoping for the best...Enjoy! PS. I wish fish really looked like this. I would immediately take up scuba diving. Also, is it just me or does this whale just make you smile?

Raise Your Arms And Let Them In

Click

It is Halloween today. The paints are drying and I am listening to Tom Waits and he is Starving In The Belly of the Whale and he also says that God's Away On Business and that Misery Is The River Of The World and what does any of this have to do with the piece of art? I am not really sure I guess. I guess simply that this is today and this is what I was doing and this is the art that was created. So, with that, Riase Your Arms and Let Them In...Enjoy!

And All The Air Was Empty

I worked late last night. This happens more often than not and at those hours of the morning you don't need the vodka to help your mind wander because it will do it just fine on its own. Did I say that I worked late last night? At those hours there is a thin line between dream and daydream and the lines and the colors seem to work no matter how you shake it. It must have been close to three this morning and this painting was on the desk right before I tip toed up the stairs and slid into a cold bed and found her warm hand and in the morning I was still wearing socks. Did I mention that this happens more often than not?... Enjoy!
