Dear City of Winchester, you convert streets that have been one-way for 50 years....and you FAIL.

Example....you mark the road pavement near intersections (such as my house) with white "slashes"  to indicate "no parking." Fine. However you neglected to paint the curbs yellow to inform those citizens that are not as savvy not to park on them. FAIL.

You also fail to tell the City Police that in fact these pavement painted "slashes" are designated NO PARKING. FAIL.

At this time, there is a vehicle in direct violation of this (because I don't want to be responding to a wreck by my bedroom). I notified the Police who responded and agreed that this vehicle was in fact causing a hazard, but however givin that the legal side of this is a "yellow curb" violation and that doesn't exist, she could not enforce any parking restrictions. FAIL.

I've emailed the City Super of Public Works (we're on a first name basis) to seek some clarification. It seems that there is a disconnect between this paving, new sidewalk, 2-way street fiasco and the Police that actually have to deal with it and enforcement. FAIL.

....and from speaking with Officers they are none too please with the parking or the 2 way conversion. It's caused problems and 3 accidents in front of my house since the switch over. Before, we had NONE. FAIL.

Oh, did I mention the blazing new street lights that turn night into luminous stark white day???!! FAIL.

That's my next post.

Today's main story in The Independent highlights the appalling behaviour of police forces throughout the UK regarding the over-zealous and deliberate misuse of Section 44 of the Terrorist Act whereby the police can search and detain anybody without a required reason to do so. This grey and bizarre legal instrument has been directed at photographers, amateur and professional alike, for taking innocent photographs of everyday subjects.

Our civil liberties are being eroded in a deliberate and Machiavellian way to grant insidious authoritarian powers to limit our democratic rights. If we don't stand up, speak up, and put a fight up, then the process will be irreversible and we'll have succumbed, by stealth, to what is effectively the seeds of neo-fascism (and yes, I'm serious).

And if you are interested in maintaining your rights and fighting back using the power of peaceful protest, then also check out this new group who I wish much success and who facilitate a dialogue between the public and the police.

The father, Edelmiro Gonzales, in turn was shot and killed by a police officer. "Seven-year-old Adrian Gonzales was pronounced dead at the scene, while his 11-year-old brother, Edryn Gonzales, and their mother, Johanna, were both hospitalized in critical condition." http://wcbstv.com/local/paterson.fatal.shootings.2.1338507.html

UPDATE: Now we find out that dad Edelmiro Gonzales who gunned down and murdered his 7-year-old son, has a history of domestic violence. It also appears that Mom tried to protect herself and her children by obtaining restraining order, which the father obviously ignored. And that there was a "bitter custody dispute" (harrassment of the mother? threats to strip her of her children, leaving them at a heightened risk of injury and death?) Families of abusers are often conditioned into knee jerk defenses of their actions, which we see here. For all the talk that Dad wasn't really a "violent man," his actions prove otherwise.

"A Paterson man who murdered his young son and shot his estranged wife and a second son on a busy city street Saturday had a history of domestic violence and was under a restraining order at the time of the shootings, police said... Authorities declined to speculate on a motive for the rampage, but Edelmiro Gonzalez’s daughter said Sunday that her father was locked in a bitter custody dispute with his estranged wife, Johanna Gonzalez, 31. 'He was just fed up with the situation,' said the daughter, Yulisa Robles, 30..."

[Charming. The daughter-defender is the same age, note, as the second wife he married when she was... 18?  19?] http://www.northjersey.com/passaic112909_Police_Paterson_Father_who_killed_son_shot_family_had_history_of_domestic_violence.html?c=y&page=1

Alleged model family man and father, baseball coach and all around nice guy Thomas Mangiantini wiped out his family under circumstances that did not (apparently) include a (formally) pending divorce or separation, or the ubiquitous media rationale of financial distress. We suspect: either there really was a possible separation threatened (for multiple possible reasons... someone cheat? someone commit a crime? etc.), or he wasn't really such the all-around nice guy the neighbors say he was. And once again a school system stupidly is calling out the "crisis management team" for students. http://www.dailyherald.com/story/?id=340178

SBY's position regarding the KPK-Police-AGO debacle... demonstrates a near criminal lack of leadership. Seen in a less charitiable light it could suggest outright participation in a criminal act.

I've just finished reading this very good blog post by Patrick (click on the link).

It got me thinking. The President has come under a lot of criticism (including from me) for being indecisive, for flip-flopping and sitting on the fence. Basically, a lot of people (including me) seem to think that SBY didn't do enough -- yet no-one has told us what he should have done.

These are the possibilities:

He should have stopped the Police investigation into Bibit and Chandra

That's called "interference in the judicial process". It's more Megawati's style (remember Prita?), and it is completely unconstitutional. The President must not interfere in the judicial process under any circumstance.

He should have fired the Attorney-General and/or the Police chief

Let's leave aside the question of whether he can actually do that for now. What would it achieve? It certainly wouldn't stop the case. And if it did stop the case, then couldn't you say that the President had interfered in the judicial process? Maybe not directly, but that doesn't matter.

Team 8 was a toothless tiger

It could only make recommendations. He should have given it more power. Power to do what exactly? Stop the case? See above.

The President shouldn't have fired Bibit and Chandra

Absolutely. This is the President's biggest mistake. But guess what. He did that after taking a lot of advice from some very smart people. He got really bad advice. If I was in his shoes, I would be seriously pissed off.

The President should have been more open in his support for Bibit and Chandra

Really? The Police chief and the Attorney-General both told him that they had undeniable evidence that Bibit and Chandra had received bribes. If I were the President, I would be carefully distancing myself from the KPK commissioners -- not supporting it!

All the accusations of delay and fence-sitting don't really amount to much unless someone says what the President should have done.

Most journalists in this country seem to have forgotten that this is a constitutional democracy and the President must abide by its rules.
