Pulitzer prize winning photographer Preston Gannaway produced a great series of photographs about a church marching band.

"Mount Carmel Baptist Church of Norfolk has an unusual way of ministering to God. Five years ago they started a 75-member band that performs at community events. They aim to have fun and to reach others outside their church."

As I stated before the photography is excellent and audio is well produced. The video however could have used a stronger narrative. I would have liked to hear one of the members or leaders talk about why the band is important to them. Also maybe a community members could been interviewed.

Even though a traditional storyline was absent from the video, a piece like this can also be judged as a "sights and sounds" story. On this level it was good but not great. The pacing was too similar and the producer should consider creating more sequences when the music and editing play off each other - such as the scene around 1:00 where the trumpet players dances.

Despite it's shortcomings the video is well-worth watching. The music is enjoyable and the photography is stunning.

Hope all is well -

Robert Frank's "The Americans" is beyond description good. However in this review Anthony Lane makes a nice effort at telling the readers of the New Yorker what photo-files have long known - The Americans is one of the most important photographic bodies of work ever.

On a related note - I saw the exhibit mentioned in this article and it is absolutely incredible. Find it and be inspired.

Hope all is well -

A Memorial to the Victims of 9/11

A pivotal moment in our history and a defining event in our collective conscious, the attack on "ground zero" - the twin towers of the world trade center in new york city, affected all of us deeply, disturbed some of us profoundly, and changed our way of life forever.

I could not take my eyes off the news - the papers, the TV broadcasts, and the nascent Internet news media. As I remember, that was when Google started its news section, including something new on its front page for the first time! During that period, I collected the outstanding work of the photojournalists featured on the front pages of every major newspaper in the United States.

I have created this visual arts mashup of the work of those professionals as a tribute to their photojounalism, as a memorial to that tragedy's innocent victims, and as a continuing reminder that we must all work together if we are ever to find peace.

We must never forget.

9 / 11 even elsewhere
thoughts in our head
3rd Worldwar
chaos, fear, confusion
thoughts:
back home now
work not important
our children, our love
nothing mathers more
together, each holding
the ones who you love
after 9 / 11
hope, hope for
a beautiful world
a world of peace
expect too much?"
