First set closer in the last show of the three night run.

It was crazy because it wasn't like the place started going nuts when the opening notes were played. The arena literally exploded all of a sudden and seemingly without much cause, basically toward the middle of the song. Trey hit one of those huge chords and BAM! It was one of those moments that you really can't accurately describe, and can only paint a very broad picture with words. It's not like there was a huge buildup either, it just happened.

The moment it did, I turned to my brother and screamed, "WHAT THE F**K JUST HAPPENED?"

Phishing

Every once in a while your email spam filter lets an email slip by it and make it into the mail box that could be proclaiming anything from a bank asking its customer to “verify an account” to the Spanish lottery commission congratulating you on “winning the lottery”.

This kind of attack aims to pull a slight of hand trick on web users and fooling them into providing their private information to the attacker. In a phishing attack, the aim is to bait the user into believing that the email and website they are getting redirected to are legitimate. The scheme collapses once the user doesn’t take the bait.

"Some are building monuments and others are jotting down notes...((Tags: mind map, blog posts, Bob Dylan, London, Cafe, mobile, Twitter, Simply Tweet))

_____

Update: This is a note for all you twitter/posterous users.

I started using a new Twitter client on my iPhone: Simply Tweet.  Simply Tweet works well with Posterous (The 6149's blogging platform). It allows you to post long tweets to Twitter that are simultaneously posted on your Posterous blog. The Tweet ends up being the title of the post as well as appears in the body text.

In my first post, I used email subject syntax to add tags to the post on posterous. The tags showed up as I wanted them too, but they also showed up in the body text (see above).  I didn't want that.

SImply Tweet responded to a tweet I made about this and gave me a solution...within 5 minutes of my posting this. Here is what they said:

@Judd6149 ah. So you want to set Posterous tags? Use hashtags. #SimplyTweet converts hashtags to Posterous tags automatically so you don't need to use the email subject syntax. The advantage is if they appear early enough, they are included as hashtags in the tweet text.

That solves that. Great customer service from @simplytweet.  Give them a try if you need a (new) mobile twitter client.

And now back to our regularly scheduled program...

The picture in this post was taken at a cafe around the corner from where I am staying in South Kensington, London.  I was on the way home from the gym and decided to stop off for a double-espresso and some early morning sunshine inspiration.

I mapped out a flew blog posts ideas for The 6149 (do you think my blog knows I am talking about it in the third person?).  When I was doing this, I started singing the lyric that is the title to this post.  It is from Bob Dylan's "The Mighty Quinn". It is off his second volume of "Greatest Hits".

Here is some commentary from The Bob from his "Chronicles" book:

Dylan in his autobiography Chronicles Volume One (published 2004), makes further reference to the song: "On the way back to the house I passed the local movie theater on Prytania Street, where The Mighty Quinn (film) was showing. Years earlier I had written a song called "The Mighty Quinn" which was a hit in England, and I wondered what the movie was about. Eventually I'd sneak off and go there to see it. It was a mystery, suspense, Jamaican thriller with Denzel Washington as the Mighty Xavier Quinn a detective who solves crimes. Funny, that's just the way I imagined him when I wrote the song The Mighty Quinn, Denzel Washington"

Indeed, Bob. Indeed.

Tune Tags

As mentioned in a 6149 post yesterday, I am introducing Tune Tags.  I have dropped in a Tune Tag playlist here for you to put your ears on. This one is chock full of different versions of "The Mighty Quinn".
  • The Bob version is really from sessions in the basement of Big Pink with the band. I love the lazy, slurry, jangle-y feel to this one.
  • The Dead's version is a reminder of how much fun it was to go to their shows and anticipate what cover they were going to play. Great times at those shows (from what I can recall...I think everyone did dose when Quinn showed up.
  • The Hollies?  Yes, the Hollies did a folksy version of this, too.  Can you hear Gram Nash in there...?
  • Speaking of cover tunes...the curators of the cover tune, Phish do their best Dead doing Bob.
  • I had to include Manfred Mann, right?  There version is the widely know version.  Smart move covering Bob & Bruce.

Note: Apologies to @wolfgangsvault. Mate, I'll get the Tune Tags up higher in the post next time (heh heh)

The Goods

Here is another new feature I am going to use on The 6149.  The Goods is the section where I will add links that reference the post contents. It will be links, images, footers, etc.  I'll give this a go and see how it works in conjunction with Tune Tags. Let me know if it is "Too Much Monkey Business".
p.s. another technical note: I did not add the Tune Tag playlist via Simply Tweet. I did it in the editing of the post.

The most challenging musical moment of the first half of Joy is provided by quirky bassist Mike Gordon on his “Sugar Shack,” where the interplay of the four-piece is in the forefront of the composition; it’s simultaneously fresh while kindling memories of an early ‘90’s Phish mélange of various sonic genres; a little funk, a little jazz, a little reggae, all in the mix.

“Light” is a shining Lillywhite moment with its trippy psych intro, headstrong chords, and, for big-time Gordon fans, some of his best bass fills on an album to date. “Light” also proffers lyrics of accepting the inevitable: “Fending off fears, and hearing the call and finally waiting for nothing at all … And the light is growing brighter now.” These words are rendered more poignant in the context of Anastasio’s sister Kristy’s tragic, way-too-young death from cancer earlier this year, and Joy is dedicated to her memory accompanied with her photo. “Light” concludes with an a cappella outro that balances the track to perfection.

 Phish - 12/31/99 - After Midnight

Big Cypress - A peek into past Phish Festivals. A brand new experience is just around the corner in Indio, CA. Join us for Phish: Festival 8, Oct 30th, 31st and Nov. 1st. Visit phish.com/festival8 for complete details.

Phish - 12/31/99 - Big Cypress "Free" from Phish on Vimeo.

"The Big Cypress Box Set is the holy grail of Phish DVD releases."          (via @glidemag

Big Cypress was the fifth and largest of seven weekend-long festivals hosted by the rock band Phish. The event took place on the eve of the millennium - December 30 and 31, 1999, at the Big Cypress Indian Reservation near the Big Cypress National Preserve in southern Florida. 85,000 people attended, making it the largest Millennium Eve concert on earth that night, surpassing shows by Sting, Barbra Streisand, Aerosmith, Billy Joel, Eric Clapton, Rod Stewart, The Eagles, Eminem, Jimmy Buffett, KISS, Metallica, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Elton John.

In a 2000 cover story for Entertainment Weekly, three of the four Phish members declared Big Cypress to be the greatest Phish concert ever. It was also voted as the most popular Phish show ever by fans in the final volume of The Pharmer's Almanac. It was also the longest Phish concert ever, culminating in a seven-and-a-half hour second set from midnight on New Year's Eve to sunrise New Year's Day . Phish was the only band at the event, performing five sets of music (nearly sixteen hours) over two nights. As fans left the concert area at sunrise, The Beatles' "Here Comes the Sun" played over the PA speakers.

Peter Jennings reported on the huge audience in an episode of ABC World News Tonight. The band's performance of "Heavy Things" was broadcast during ABC's millennium coverage. Following the song, at the band's request, fans chanted the word "cheesecake" instead of cheering to confuse viewers at home (although in the end, the broadcast cut away before the gag could play out). The ABC broadcast was also shown to billions around the world apart of 2000 Today. At the beginning of the band's legendary seven-and-a-half hour second set, guitarist Trey Anastasio mentioned that the band had portable toilets onstage so they could use the restroom during the marathon set, and a team of security guards lined the stage to prevent band members from "wimping out" and trying to leave the stage. In a later interview with Charlie Rose, Anastasio stated that this was the peak of Phish's career.

Both of these video clips are of absolute supreme quality...from a time in the bands's history, in which many fans still feel was & will always be, the greatest night of music played by the band. Regardless of opinions on the band, their music, or their fan base, the all night NYE '99 party that took place at Big Cypress broke boundaries and set records across the board. Multitudes, of whcih, that will stand for a very long time before another band comes anywhere near achieving their equivalent in the near future. Unless, of course, Phish feels the need to do so at Festival 8.
