Today, NEWSWEEK's Editor Jon Meacham has responded to critics. "We chose the most interesting image available to us to illustrate the theme of the cover, which is what we always try to do,” Meacham said. "We apply the same test to photographs of any public figure, male or female: does the image convey what we are saying? That is a gender-neutral standard."

At least they are honest... I mean, it's not honest reporting, but at least they are honest about their reasons.

Obama knows the long odds against a right-wing populist winning the presidency, no matter how good she looks in a skirt (or running clothes), brandishing a gun.

No matter how good she looks in a skirt? What would have happened to a conservative had they said that about Hilary?
Now don't you worry your pretty little head Sarah, let the men handle politics. You just go home where you belong and take care of your special-needs kid.
Why is it that liberal columnists get a pass on their sexist remarks? Talk about a double standard. I don't want the republicans to back Palin in 2012, but the sexism is getting old.

Sarah Palin's message for the day: Just stick to your story, regardless of how ridiculous or disproven it may be; the people who want to believe it will believe it

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin was invited to testify before the New York state Senate Aging Committee by its Chairman, Rev. Ruben Diaz. Instead of testifying, Palin has submitted written testimony, and publicizes it via her latest Facebook "Note."…

"A great deal of attention was given to my use of the phrase 'death panel' in discussing such rationing," Palin writes. "Despite repeated attempts by many in the media to dismiss this phrase as a 'myth', its accuracy has been vindicated."

That message is about 3,000 percent more useful to today's kids than Obama's stupid "Stay in school and study hard" bullshit.

No wonder she's gonna be our new Queen in four years, and Barack Obama's gonna be deported back to Kenya.

I know she's nothing but a fool, but seriously? Seriously? This now officially qualifies as DISinformation, as opposed to its inception as MISinformation.

As if she hadn’t stirred up enough baseless wrath, now Palin is using her celebrity to denigrate the U.S. Export/Import Bank.  Incredibly (or maybe not so, given the shallow understanding demonstrated in most of her statements) she is opposed to this program .

The Ex-Im bank lends money for foreign companies to use for U.S. produced goods and services. It is a LOAN, and it must be used by the receiving company, Petrobras in Brazil, for AMERICAN GOODS AND SERVICES. To be opposed to this is to be opposed to U.S. production.

From Politico :

In this case, Cogan said, the proposed loan would likely finance engineering services, sales of ships to service oil platforms, or drilling equipment.

"This is the government doing what it's supposed to do: Create jobs and make sure that Americans get a fair shot at selling goods and services — not the British or the French or anyone else — and to help American workers compete on a level playing field," Cogan said, noting that most developed countries have similar credit-export agencies.

Perhaps I should really be blaming the Wall Street Journal which is happy to publish opinion articles that seem to be giving Palin her ammunition. I think it’s pretty damn shocking that this pre-eminent business newspaper is okay with tearing down support for programs that support U.S. jobs as long as they get people to oppose Obama.

A New Trend says...

Yes, it is far too early to be polling potential 2012 matchups.  They are nearly meaningless at this stage (and for the next several stages) of the game.  But in the doldrums of August, these poll numbers are far too much fun to resist.

The Marist Poll is out with new numbers today showing President Obama soundly defeating former Gov. Sarah Palin 56 percent to 33 percent if they were the candidates in the 2012 election and if it was strangely held in August 2009.

There are a couple of clear and important warning signs for Gov. Palin in these early numbers.

She appears unable to create the near monolithic support among voters in her own party.  In this poll, Gov. Palin only receives support from 73% of Republicans.  Gov. Palin’s outsized popularity with a segment of the Republican Party may not necessarily translate to the entire Republican electorate in a general election.  By comparison, Sen. McCain garnered 90% of the Republican vote in his defeat to Barack Obama last November.

It also appears Gov. Palin has some continued work to do to turn her high profile resignation into a political plus.  61 percent of those polled said her resignation was a bad political move, according to Marist.  In fact, among Republicans, 51 percent believe stepping down from office the way she did may have potentially damaged her political future.

Perhaps the most devastating number in this poll for Sarah Palin is the basic measurement of her popularity with the American electorate.  Her numbers are upside down with 43 percent of respondents view her unfavorably, compared with 37 percent of respondents who hold a favorable view.

The Marist folks also took a look at the 2012 Republican field.  For all her name recognition and popularity among a segment of the Republican Party, Sarah Palin is in a three-way battle for 2012 GOP frontrunner.

Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney scores 21 percent support, Palin comes in at 20 percent, and former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee gets 19 percent in the poll of Republican voters.

I hope to god Palin is the Republican nominee come 2012, the final death nail to an out of touch party that needs to go back and remember there used to be a president named Lincoln that actually ran as one of them
