Violence of whatever denomination (physical, psychological, social, political, etc.) can be perpetrated agaisnt many: another person or group of people, a principle one holds dearly, nature and the environment, some aspect of self, etc. In any case a common result of an act of violence is our identity disappears and that my friends is the truth.

Thanks to Gigi for these reminders about violence as well:

The rush and pressure of modern life are a form, perhaps the most common form, of its innate violence. To allow oneself to be carried away by a multitude of conflicting concerns, to surrender oneself to too many demands, to commit oneself to too many projects, to want to help everyone in everything is to succumb to violence. More than that, it is cooperation in violence. It destroys one's own inner capacity for peace. It destroys the fruitfulness of one's own work, because it kills the root of inner wisdom which makes work fruitful. (adapted from Thomas Merton)

"We live in the fullness of time. Every moment is God's own good time, His kairos. The whole thing boils down to giving ourselves in prayer a chance to realize that we have what we seek. We don't have to rush after it. It is there all the time, and if we give it time it will make itself known to us." - Thomas Merton

This time it’s not Jesus or the Virgin Mary popping up in some obscure location; but it’s nonetheless interesting.

Face of the giant panda sign:

I've just discovered a curious medical finding that can be detected on MRI brain scans called the 'face of the giant panda sign' where, quite literally, it looks like there's a panda face in the middle of the brain, indicating a specific pattern of neural damage.

The image you can see on the left is the 'face of the giant panda sign' that appeared in a brain scan of a patient with multiple sclerosis who started showing unusual sexual behaviour and is taken from a 2002 study. Click the image if you want to see the whole scan.

The pattern is apparently caused by "high signal in the tegmentum, normal signals in the red nuclei and lateral portion of the pars reticulata of the substantia nigra, and hypointensity of the superior colliculus".

It is most associated with Wilson's disease, a genetic condition which causes a toxic build-up of copper in the body, but obviously can appear in other disorders as well.

Thanks to Twitter user @sarcastic_f for alerting me to this.

It's not just pandas that appear in brain scans of course, the Virgin Mary has also been known to make an appearance.

So, 21 years into my fruitful yet scary life I have decided to share my thoughts, ideas and interests with the rest of the human race I so kindly share this Earth with. Inspired by several people, such as my classmate Emlyn (read his blog here: http://emlynakoto-dwemoh.tumblr.com/ ), this blog will bring to you daily snippets of the business world, the technology world, the music world and, well, I guess, my world.

This is me and this is my blog...

Did it!, approximately 5 hours (I am still waiting for official timing) but my wife and I made it round the Melbourne Marathon yesterday. In a lot of ways I owe it to books like Chirunning and Zenhabits especially post such as this one about Smiling, Breathing & Going Slowly - my favourite motto in life.

About 3-4 weeks ago, I injured my knee, through a combination of Chi Running and barefoot running ideas I managed to change my running technique in a only 3 or so weeks so much that I went from being unable to run 3-4 KM to running 42KM!

Truly, our goal was to make it all the way to the end with a hope that we would do it in less than 5 hours, I cramped up with about 6KM to go and had to drink a LOT of Powerade to help it go away but it did give me enough to speed up and in fact sprint the last lap around the Melbourne Cricket Ground which was pretty cool.

Jenny has an injured knee too which strangely only really hurts if she stops or walks so strapping and determination got here there too! Honestly she was awesome and ran every kilometre, I could not have a better running partner.

On top of this, I came down with a cold on Thursday and felt pretty rough Sunday morning but went anyway, it was either going to:

  1. Sweat it out
  2. Get worse

My body chose option 2 :) I feel pretty lousy now but it was worth it, next up? maybe the Marysville half marathon and definitely a few more mountain bike races.

Mangala, or Mars, tried twice to create the world with seeds. The first attempt failed because he had only one seed. On his second attempt, Mangala used four sets of twin seeds. This (twin!) experiment was better, and soon a universe was growing within a cosmic egg. Ultimately, however, one of the male twins, Pemba, grew tired of being confined. In attempting to escape, he proved treacherous. The rip he caused in the cosmic egg begat the Earth. It also compelled Mangala to seek a sacrifice of atonement. For this, Mangala killed Pemba's innocent fraternal twin, Faro. When Faro's remains were scattered on the newly formed Earth, fertile land was formed.

The Earth is the result of the treason of an evil twin and the sacrifice of a good one. Sounds about right.
