This? Is the greatest story in the history of the series of tubez.

First of all, it's a story about a Jesus sighting, which of course I love. Secondly, there's a picture, which I can't resist:

Third, everything about it is just perfect. The headline: "'Jesus face' spotted on the toilet door in Ikea Glasgow." The picture caption: "Jesus, or possibly Gandalf, as spotted on the door of the gents' toilets in a Glasgow branch of Ikea." The lede: "A bearded face, with long flowing hair, is plainly visible on the wooden door of the men's toilet in the Braehead outlet of the Swedish furniture and meatballs giant." The quote from a shopper: "It's certainly not what you expect to find in an Ikea store. Mind you, you need a lit! tle divine intervention to get out of here sometimes." The store take on the visage: "In a further twist, Ikea bosses claim that the image is really Benny Anderson, of the Eurovision Song Contest-winning Swedish 1970s Europop outfit ABBA. A spokeswoman said: 'Swedishness is engrained in every part of our stores'."

And then there's the related article call-out:

The King of Pop, in his infinite grace and wisdom, has returned to mortal realm by making his face appear in an ultrasound of fetus inside a British lady's uterus.

Dawn Kelley is pregnant with a girl, who at 20 weeks bears striking resemblance to Jacko. Said father William Hickman:

None of us are really Michael Jackson fans. I mean I like him, but we're not crazy about him or anything.

Dawn notes, "It is my seventh child, and they say seven is a mythical number."

This is one of the best ice cream shops I've ever been in. It's Fenocchio's, in Place Rosetti, Old Town, Nice. They don't seem to mind people spending a while choosing from the zillion flavours. One day, I'll try 'tomato basil'.  Or beer. Maybe.

1. Snipers' alley - one of several. Burnt out Hotel Bristol. Wide open roads like this meant anyone crossing them - as people had to do, from time to time - was an easy target for snipers in the hills

2. We deduced from books that this was the corner where Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife were assassinated in June 1914, which was a precursor to WW1. There is no plaque and nothing marked on city maps. Our interpreter said it was 'too soon' to mark it....meaning that it was still a sensitive issue, given the assassins were Serbian nationalists

3. Me sitting alongside the river. In the background traditional ecclesiastical architecture is seen next to a bit of Communist brutal school. Elsewhere in Sarajevo the mosque, the synagogue and the Orthodox Christian cathedral sit within a stone's throw of one another, a reminder of Sarajevo's ethnically and religiously mixed past

4. Postcard, showing how easy it was for the Bosnian Serb gunmen to maintain their assault during the siege. Sarajevo is the centre of a saucer, surrounded by hills

I learnt on the news today that political tensions are running high once more in Bosnia Herzegovina. I did a short contract for UNICEF in Bosnia in 2000, and one of my souvenirs was a copy of the famous siege map, commemorating the 3.5 years that the civilian population of the city was held isolated and in constant danger by Karadzik's Bosnian Serb forces in the hills.

12,000 civilians died in the city in that time, and there were 50,000 wounded. Targets included the bread queues, the water queues and even the maternity hospital. The drawing shows the tunnel (top centre) which was built after a few months, 1.5 metres high,  800 metres long, that allowed food and other supplies  to come in friom the airport (bottom left).

It chills to think all this could happen again.

ZHENG Dexun shows off a humanshaped heshouwu, or Chinese knotweed, yesterday in Langzhong in southwest China's Sichuan Province. The herb, weighing 5.8 kilograms and standing 62 centimeters high, resembles a naked child. Zheng, 63, a farmer in Datianba Village, discovered the oddity five days ago while digging for the herb, which is used as a tonic for the kidneys and to treat weak bones and hair loss.

Ron says...

Violence of whatever denomination (physical, psychological, social, political, etc.) can be perpetrated agaisnt many: another person or group of people, a principle one holds dearly, nature and the environment, some aspect of self, etc. In any case a common result of an act of violence is our identity disappears and that my friends is the truth.

Thanks to Gigi for these reminders about violence as well:

The rush and pressure of modern life are a form, perhaps the most common form, of its innate violence. To allow oneself to be carried away by a multitude of conflicting concerns, to surrender oneself to too many demands, to commit oneself to too many projects, to want to help everyone in everything is to succumb to violence. More than that, it is cooperation in violence. It destroys one's own inner capacity for peace. It destroys the fruitfulness of one's own work, because it kills the root of inner wisdom which makes work fruitful. (adapted from Thomas Merton)

"We live in the fullness of time. Every moment is God's own good time, His kairos. The whole thing boils down to giving ourselves in prayer a chance to realize that we have what we seek. We don't have to rush after it. It is there all the time, and if we give it time it will make itself known to us." - Thomas Merton
