My church has been doing some fantastic things for the community. The growth has been a true blessing, especially during a time when people often wonder what the future brings or when they feel that there is no hope or salvation.

Fairhaven Church is reaching out further to make and build authentic relationships with people beyond the walls of the church. Relationships that can be built to help people take a journey to discover about Jesus Christ.

Here is a great video that was created by the media team at Fairhaven. It was shared with the congregation at services this past weekend.

This makes my husband so happy, I find it hard to argue with it.  And I have to admit it presents me with some lovely photo ops.  This certainly isn't something I want to do.  If I could just stick my arms out and rise quietly into the air, I would.  But the pack is heavy, safe landings require skill and they hurt if they're less than perfect.

I do like the wing a lot.  It makes me want to fly a kite.  Right now, most of our Ohio vultures have left for the season, but I look forward to their return because they will be lots of fun when John is gliding.  (Unless they are afraid of the motor.)  When I fly kites, the vultures come one by one, from very far away, to inspect the colored things I am floating in the air.  I hope they will come to hang out with the paraglider.  LV

While I'm on the topic of birds, just a photo-moment of gratitude to my back yard chickens who supply me daily with eggs that my egg-sperienced neighbors laud as "the yummiest eggs ever". Although Henry is beautiful, I confess I'm not very grateful to *him*. He doesn't lay eggs, and he's stabbed me twice with those spurs. The hen in the foreground is RedHat. LV

Wright State University Yellow Springs Ohio Health Care Clinic was Razed last week. Yellow Springs Dental Care and The Friends Care Center mourn the loss of our neighbor in providing quality care for Yellow Springs and environs. Healthcare Reform, Healthcare access. As our national debate on healthcare continues, there can be no doubt that healthcare will be less available in Yellow Springs because of this tragedy. We are all a little bit poorer for the loss of this Yellow Springs health facility.

Certain things that are ubiquitous and irritating in most settings can become very pleasant in a small town. I think our Chinese Buffet is one of those things.

It's next to the farm supply store.  The people who work there are Cantonese speakers, though once in a while I hear a little Mandarin when conversations are businesslike. I don`t understand either language- I can just hear a difference. The restaurant is small, and only busy right at noon and at dinner time. The rest of the time it is an unstylish oasis, always a little bit too warm from the steam tables, with the television running closed caption news in the overhead corner, and the electric picture of the Great Wall with twinkling lights that change colors.

I especially like the electric picture. It reminds me of the Miller High Life sign with its colored bubbles that hung in the bar of my grandmother's diner. I was never allowed to go into the bar.  If I wanted a soda, I had to wait in the kitchen door for my uncle to get it from the cooler and bring it to me.  So I feel priviledged and grown up when I have the chance to sit down in a place that has a twinkling electric sign.

I abstain from meat, so I like ethnic restaurants, where someone will cook me something filling and completely seasoned that suits my observance.  And, although I adore chocolate, I'm really not a sweets person.  Lots of different fruits, cut in pieces, are definitely my idea of dessert.  I can choose what I want, and no one makes fun - another subtle empowerment.

Centering and subtle empowerment were what I needed today.  Yesterday I worked a crushing patient load at the Five Alarm Hospital.  Recently, I was relieved to hear it isn't just us 50-somethings who feel like we've been beaten all over with a stick the next day.  Usually, a hard sleep and an energy shot revive me, but I was still feeling good for nothing today at noon.

The Chinese Buffet was my chance to feel balanced, grown up, and well-provisioned again.  LV

Um, don't try this at home...

Yes, that's my husband up there, dangling elegantly from a paraglider.  When he was younger, my husband used to do sensible things like sing opera professionally.  Now he teaches music grades K-8 and has recently taken up powered paragliding.  He's been taking lessons all summer, in hopes of being able to fly from the pasture of our farm.  ("What a nice evening, dear.  I think I'll jump out for a little fly.")  Our apples trees and the rolling landscape make our pasture a bit more challenging than the flat open fields his instructor used for teaching.  So it has taken John a few weeks and a few attempts to get that first nice evening flight.  But there it is.

Strangers drove up the farm driveway with their kids to watch.  I was a little bit worried that the photographer for our local paper might show up.  This is a little town, and folks will call Virgil whenever they see anything unusual.  But it was a short flight, and I was the only photographer on hand.  John glided about, wearing a big smile and frightening nearby cattle and wildlife.  He also pegged a perfect landing.  I was very excited for him.

Myself, I believe flying should involve substantially more equipment than a lawnmower and an oversized handkerchief.  But a fella in his middle fifties could choose worse diversions, I figure.  As a licensed health care professional, I do have a couple rules for my husband's flying.  Rule 1: don't fall out of the sky.  Rule 2: if you break Rule 1, please do so in one final tragic blaze of glory - no fair lingering in the ICU where your wife works.

    Congratulations to a daring guy!
