SeCOF Construction, The Buddy Blake Team + Coldwell Banker Sea Coast Realty are "Teaming Up" to help families in Central America!

Posted by Angela Batchelor on Monday, December 7th, 2009 at 3:40pm.

We all try to find a way to give back and give to those in need over the holidays. To quote St. Francis of Assisi, “For it is in giving that we truly receive.”

I wanted to share with you a cause that we are supporting this holiday season.  The Buddy Blake Team and Coldwell Banker Sea Coast Realty have embraced helping Save A Generation, a non-profit organization that helps feed over 1,500 children each week and delivers medical aid to families throughout Nicaragua and Honduras in Central America.

How we got involved

The Buddy Blake Team and Coldwell Banker Sea Coast Realty partners with local builder SeCOF Construction to help provide quality, affordable homes in the Wilmington area. When we found out SeCOF Construction had become greatly involved with Save A Generation, providing not only resources (such as food, money, and clothing) but also devoting their time and efforts to rebuild villages located throughout Central America, we wanted to know how we could help. Ken Coffer, owner of SeCOF, showed us what Save A Generation was able to provide with our help and we eagerly jumped on board!

Last year alone, Save A Generation provided food and medical assistance to more than 10,000 people across Central America. As a team, we hope that our involvement will make it possible for Save A Generation reach out to more people in 2010!

Click here to find out more about Save A Generation. You can also show your support by becoming a Fan on Save A Generation's Facebook Page. Through Facebook you can see what’s happening and photos of current and past mission trips. You can even make a donation too!

How will you give this year?

euskir music y el sentido de comunidad / euskir music and the sense of community

There's no chance for euskir music to survive without me, yes, Federico Antin, I'm the first brick in this wonderful and bruised project, and as many of you may know, I'd been having not so good times, then, something basic to build any kind of society, the sense of community, came to the rescue.

Between all those marvellous persons involved, the warm heart from my beloved friend Liz Gilbert (the creative mastermind behind anodyne2art & chordata, and many other fantastic creations in her amazing career), talented multi - artist, creating an emergency fund for euskir music, and beyond her immense work, the help from Elli, Dorothee, Sheila, Arlean, Cathy, Lisa, Sunna, William, Ali, Sean, Juan Carlos, Wilfred, Scott, Sigurdór, and not only money, very important these days to keep non profit projects as this alive, words, words of support, encouraging words, from the United States (from coast to coast), Switzerland, Germany and Turkey (at the same time!), Iceland, suddenly a big online community became an offline community, a real social network, to support Federico Antin, but also euskir music, and to the deep meaning behind that name, music, art, independence, culture.
I'm sure I'm forgetting someone, the names above are the link with all of you out there, thanks, this is your community too...

The emergency it's over now, and we're looking a steady income, of course my own wallet it's always ready to listen the euskir music's call, at the same time the image of our good friend Mad Bear (member of the Bear Clan of the Tuscarora, Nation of Six-Nation Iroquois Confederacy. An activist, medicine man and world leader), above at right, is the link to collaborate with euskir music, no matter the amount, if we can keep this sense of community growing and growing, each little, or big coin, will be back in the streets of the world, every day, helping to support music and musicians, because good music needs our help to survive, and euskir music, well, we can't do it alone, we're a small brick in this beautiful artistic community.

The Threadhead Records Foundation (a 501(c)3 non-profit) is pleased to announce its inaugural round of grant funding. Specifically, the Foundation has been launched to further promote the cultural heritage of New Orleans through grants and assistance to musicians whose music is in this tradition. The Foundation seeks to assist those musicians whose work is in this style and do not have the resources to produce and distribute their work, or in some cases to actively create their music because they lack basic financial resources to sustain their lives.  The purpose of these grants is to support musicians in creating music projects to encourage and promote New Orleans music and cultural heritage.

Applications for funding are invited from individuals and organizations residing in the State of Louisiana that support Threadhead Records Foundation's mission of promoting the cultural heritage of New Orleans. Applications for Round 1 Grant Funding commence December 7, 2009 and close January 3, 2010. Notification of grant awards will be sent by letter and e-mail by January 15, 2010. The proposed activity funded by this grant must occur between February 1, 2010 and May 1, 2010.

Up to three grants will be funded in this cycle. The maximum amount of a grant request is $4,000. Grant awards may be for less than the amount requested.

For information on application forms and guidelines, and/or to make a donation to the Threadhead Records Foundation visit threadheadrecords.com

Twitter and Talking Equals Twalkin. Twalkin, currently in beta and available only in the US (although Twalkin is aiming for international expansion according to a recent interview on net@night), lets you easily talk via phone with all your Twitter friends. An iPhone app is waiting approval from Apple. As their Web site states, Twalkin allows you, for example, to have a private chat with your closest friends, make a big announcement while your team or fans listen or hold a conference call with a select few speakers. This is an interesting application with the potential to be used in many creative ways. Twalkin's service is free although you will be charged according to your phone carrier's rates.

Currently Talkin requires a user to provide their Twitter username and password. Hopefully this will be changed to allow secure authentication through Twitter. Secondly, one's username and password are provided in the clear. That is, there currently is not a SSL/TLS connection (identified by https://) between' one's browser and server. To learn more about Twalkin, vist their Web site at:

As the economy continues to bite and charitable donations suffer, non-profits are looking increasingly towards the corporate sector for donations and fund-raising. This is a win-win for both parties - non-profits can benefit from larger companies and their employee numbers, and the businesses themselves find a perfect way to give back to the communities that provide much of their workforce and success.

At Maritz Canada, this is something that the company takes incredibly seriously every year. I've only been here two months, but already I'm incredibly impressed by how the culture is built around people, internally and externally. For such a large business, it has an amazing small agency outlook, and that's a very good thing.

Last year, for example, Maritz Canada made a holiday video card that showed the fun values in place within the Maritz building. They also donated $10,000 to the Parents for Better Beginnings non-profit, which helps children in low-income high-risk neighbourhoods from developing poor developmental outcomes.

This year is no different.

A paper Christmas tree has been set up outside the Maritz cafeteria, where the names of more than 200 children are attached. Employees choose a name and then buy a non-violent gift up to the value of $20, which will then be left under the main Maritz Christmas tree in the reception area and given to the child for Christmas.

If you don't have time to shop for the gift personally, then you can rent a shopper and gift wrapper, with all proceeds once more going to Parents for Better Beginnings.

There are many times that large organizations come under fire for corporate greed and not caring enough about their employees or local communities and businesses. I'm really happy to be involved with a company that not only cares on all fronts, but encourages its people to care as well.

As Maritz Canada shows, there are endless ways to help and give back. Something all companies could do, yes?

this sounds amazing, and allows me to pretend I'm Bill Gates even though money doesn't fall from the heavens each time I boot up a PC. my only question for this amazing micro-lending/egalitarian philanthropism: who am I going to fund?

Kiva is the world's first person-to-person micro-lending website, empowering individuals to lend to unique entrepreneurs around the globe.

The people you see on Kiva's site are real individuals. When you browse entrepreneurs' profiles on Kiva, choose someone to lend to, and then make a loan, you are helping a real person make great strides towards economic independence and improve life for themselves, their family, and their community. Throughout the course of the loan (usually 6-12 months), you can receive email journal updates and track repayments. Then, when you get your loan money back, you can relend to someone else.

All health related non-profits could benefit from creating, keep up with, and promoting a blog. In effort to keep constituents engaged with your cause and brand name, a blog is another marketing tactic that can be used to reach them, interact, and integrate value exchange situations. Beth Kanter of Beth’s Blog: How Nonprofits Can Use Social Media: http://beth.typepad.com/ is a great resource to get a broad glimpse of WHY you should be blogging (among other social media tactics). Additionally, Britt Bravo of Big Vision Consulting just posted a 5 easy step plan to actually get started: http://havefundogood.blogspot.com/

Basically, as Britt and the author David Scott of The New Rules of Marketing & PR will tell you, it all starts with reading and engaging with other blogs. Of course there are some basic ethics to follow such as, be honest, disclosure, and transparency, but the overall beginning point is pretty similar to any other marketing campaign -
Research
Strategize
Plan
Design
Test
Launch Maintain

Best advice I can give about blogging and social media in general is DON’T LET FEAR STAND IN THE WAY. Your constituents support you, now pay them back with a bit of online community building, information offerings, and human interaction.
