Flooding in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina caused arsenic levels to soar in New Orleans, according to a report due to be published in Environmental Research.

US authorities said high levels of arsenic found in floodwater sediment after the flooding was down to pre-existing contamination. But the new findings refute this claim.

About 600 mid-city homeowners are resisting the new VA hospital and don't want to sell their property.

The VA hospital is being built on property bound by Tulane, south Rocheblave Canal and south Galvez. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs said it expects to have all the land necessary by July 2010. The 200-bed VA medical complex is scheduled to open in 2013.
