Pogoplug have announced their second-generation device, and it aims to build on the usability of the original multimedia sharing brick. As well as a new hardware design, with four USB 2.0 ports versus the first-gen model’s single port, there’s also new software with better integration with social media and online galleries such as Facebook, Twitter and MySpace. The core concept, however, remains the same: a sixty-second setup, basically amounting to plugging in at least one hard-drive, an ethernet connection and power, and registering the Pogoplug serial number to a free account online.

"The company expect the second-gen Pogoplug to ship in time for the 2009 holidays, and are taking pre-orders now with an MRSP of $129; there are no ongoing service fees." ... more details, pics at link

I have to be honest I'm not really big on social music and yes I only listened to this song because Nas was featured on it and the title caught my eye. After listening to it though I had a different feeling about soul music like I could really listen to it and maybe learn something. It's very "soulful" as it was said on TheLIfeFIles. Hopefully you enjoy the song as much as I did.

The late night workout of Total Body Burn after a Tuesday night outing to The Golden State (thumbs up for a delicious burger, jalapeno slaw and scoops ice cream; thumbs down on parking). Bonus were celebrity sightings we actually care about like Zev and Justin from The Amazing Race and Amy Poehler and Louis C.K. from Parks and Recreation (and they were actually filming!)

Yesterday I reflected on an interesting (at least to me) difference between the NASB and the ESV in a particular passage. Today, I will show some differences between the current NASB (NASB95) and the 1971 NASB, as well as differences between the current NASB95 and several translations. From here on is taken from the Lockman Foundation web site, except my comments in BOLD.

How does the Updated NASB compare with the original NASB?

Updated NASB = red underline text
NASB Original = blue cross-through text

Ex. 15:7 "And in the greatness of ThineYour excellenceThou dost Youoverthrow those who rise up against Thee You; Thou dost You send forth Thy Your burning anger, and it consumes them as chaff.
Is. 35:6 Then the lame will leap like a deer, And the tongue of the dumb mute will shout for joy.
Matt. 1:19 And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man, and not wanting to disgrace her, desired to put planned to sendher away secretly.
1 Cor. 9:27 but I buffet discipline my body and make it my slave, lest possibly so that, after I have preached to others, I myself should
will not be disqualified.
Rev. 1:13 and in the middle of the lampstands I saw one like a son of man, clothed in a robe reaching to the feet, and girded across His breast chest with a golden girdle sash.
Rev. 16:5 And I heard the angel of the waters saying, "Righteous art Thou are You, who art are and who wast were, O Holy One, because Thou didst judge You judged these things;

Those seem like very good updates to me. But how does the NASB95 compare with other modern translations? Actually at their site they compare more than with the ESV and NIV, but for brevity that is all I will uses here.

Prov. 1:17

NASB Indeed, it is useless to spread the baited net in the sight of any bird;
ESV For in vain is a net spread in the sight of any bird,
NIV

How useless to spread a net in full view of all the birds!

Prov. 26:7

NASB Like the legs which are useless to the lame, so is a proverb in the mouth of fools.
ESV Like a lame man’s legs, which hang useless, is a proverb in the mouth of fools.
NIV

Like a lame man’s legs that hang limp is a proverb in the mouth of a fool

Is. 33:3

NASB At the sound of the tumult peoples flee; at the lifting up of Yourself nations disperse.
ESV At the tumultuous noise peoples flee; when you lift yourself up, nations are scattered,
NIV At the thunder of your voice, the peoples flee; when you rise up, the nations scatter.

Is. 41:3

NASB He pursues them, passing on in safety, by a way he had not been traversing with his feet.
ESV He pursues them and passes on safely, by paths his feet have not trod.
NIV He pursues them and moves on unscathed, by a path his feet have not traveled before.

Matt. 4:19

NASB And He *said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
ESV And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
NIV “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.”

Matt. 16:19

NASB I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven."
ESV I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."
NIV I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."

Anyone wonder why the striking difference in this last comparison from Matt. 16"19?

In the worship service today the word was read from Acts 21. When we came to verses 30ff I noticed something interesting. The ESV translated as follows:

30 Then all the city was stirred up, and the people ran together. They seized Paul and dragged him out of the temple, and at once the gates were shut. 31 And as they were seeking to kill him, word came to the tribune of the cohort that all Jerusalem was in confusion. 32 He at once took soldiers and centurions and ran down to them. And when they saw the tribune and the soldiers, they stopped beating Paul. 33 Then the tribune came up and arrested him and ordered him to be bound with two chains. He inquired who he was and what he had done.

I was reading along in the NAS (an older version) and noticed how different it was:

30Then all the city was provoked, and the people rushed together, and taking hold of Paul they (BD)dragged him out of the temple, and immediately the doors were shut. 31While they were seeking to kill him, a report came up to the [a]commander of the (BE)Roman cohort that all Jerusalem was in confusion.32At once he (BF)took along some soldiers and centurions and ran down to them; and when they saw the commander and the soldiers, they stopped beating Paul. 33Then the commander came up and took hold of him, and ordered him to be (BG)bound with (BH)two chains; and he began asking who he was and what he had done.

Hmmm. I checked the word out in my reverse interlinear and a Greek lexicon. Here is what I found. The word translated tribune (ESV) and commander (NAS) is χιλίαρχον. Gingrich and Danker's Shorter Lexicon defines the word as "military tribune, commander of a cohort, about 600 men, roughly equivalent to a major or colonel."

But why would the ESV translate it as "tribune?" Well Webster helps us understand. Tribune: "a Roman official under the monarchy and the republic with the function of protecting the plebeian citizen from arbitrary action by the patrician magistrates" As we read here and on in the passage and into the next chapter it becomes apparent that this "tribune" or "commander" was doing what he was supposed to. He extricated Paul from the mob to determine what was going on.

But still, why actually use "tribune" these days? Why not commander? Who knows and/or even uses "tribune" unless we're referring to The Chicago Tribune? I think the ESV would have been more helpful here to follow the NAS in this case.

The new Synology DSM 2.2 firmware permits (among many other new features) to use your NAS as a Time Machine destination to store Mac OS X backups. Here's how to configure it:

  • Connect to your Synology Disk Station Manager
  • First create a shared folder, name it whatever you want (TimeMachine in my case)
  • Then enable the AppleTalk protocol and choose your previously created shared folder as Time Machine destination
  • Open Time Machine preferences on your Mac and choose your NAS disk
  • That's it, you're done!

As with any Time Capsule appliance, perform your first full backup over a wired link. It will take some time. Afterward, incremental backups are no problem over WiFi.

I could only muster 30 minutes of Hip Hop Abs Total Body Burn after nearly a week off from formal working out. This is also after a weekend in which I ate largely off plan (with a particularly decadent Sunday of cookies, cakes, burgers, fried onion strings, and the like). And also a weekend in which The Lady was in LA.

The extra 3 pounds and the poor workout today were all worth itbecause it was time well spent with her.

You may commence your awws now.
