Garden Grove – One More Productions heads back to ancient Rome with its third show of the season: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. Performances will run from November 19th to December 13th at The GEM Theater in Garden Grove.
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is the story of a slave named Pseudolus who tries to earn his freedom by helping his master win the heart of the beautiful Philia. The plot displays many classic elements of farce, including puns, the slamming of doors, cases of mistaken identity (frequently involving characters disguising themselves as one another) and satirical comments on social class. The show’s title derives itself from the line that vaudeville comedians often used to begin a story: "A funny thing happened on the way to the theater.” With a book by Burt Shevelove and the late Larry Gelbart and music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum won several Tony awards during its initial Broadway run in 1962.
The setting for A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is a street in ancient Rome, in front of three adjacent houses. First is the brothel of Lycus who takes his profession of peddler of flesh very seriously. Next is the house of Senex, his wife Domina and their son Hero. Last is the house of Erronius who continually bemoans the unsolved kidnapping long ago of his son and daughter.
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum features a terrific cast including Jay Schenk as Hero, Kyle Myers as Pseudolous , John K. Wilson as Senex, Jennifer Moraca as Domina, Nicole Cassesso as Philia, Robert Edward as Marcus Lycus, Christopher Harper as Erronius, Ryan Coon as Miles Gloriosus and Jara Jones as Hysterium.
Completing the cast is an ensemble of talented performers including David Miller, Sergio Mitre, Pablo Perfecto, Andie Prabhu, Anne Schroeder, Kathleen Scott, Carly Taberski and Stephanie Zellhoefer.
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is being directed and musically directed by Damien Lorton, produced by Nicole Cassesso and choreographed by Andie Prabhu.One More Productions’ curtain time is 8 pm for evening performances (Thursday, Friday, Saturday) and 3 pm for matinee performances (Sunday). The GEM Theater will be closed on Thanksgiving Day and Saturday, December 5th.
