an interactive exhibit i saw at the mofah a while ago. in houston the exhibit was on three smaller, horizontal screens so it could be used by three different groups of people at the same time, but was otherwise the same. it was pretty cool, but kind of sad. the song in the background is the instrumental part of personal by stars, which is really sad. i have put the song up if you'd like to hear the whole thing (it was also on the playlist i posted earlier this week). don't listen to it if you are in a good mood, though.

in a similar vein, another song on that playlist, bellyful, has an interactive website that is strangely mesmerizing.

Though it’s not the end of the year yet, the year is coming to an end. In this entry I will list my top 10 favorite albums of the year and state why I like, just thought it would be cool. Music has been very important in my life this past year, although I still don’t know sh*t about music, I love it. I appreciate it helps me with my schoolwork, my photography, my perception of things and so on. It is in a certain way my first connection with the world where the right side of the brain dominates. It is important that you understand that I am not an expert, my reviews are base on feelings and feelings only, would love to read your list and maybe discover something new.  Note the list is not written in any particular order (choosing ten albums was enough rating them would involve liying)

So

1)    The pursuit –Jamie Cullum

Jamie if I may refer as to Mr.Cullum as such, has been one of my favorite jazz artists for about two years now. I think he lived and expressed “The clash” of twenties, you know that feeling where the only and already coexist. Although he turned 30 this year, I still consider that he is the Jazz voice of generation Y. Compared in it’s early days with Buble, he managed to stay soulful while I feel like Buble separated himself from his music.

2)    Junior - Royskoop

This album started the year musically for me, it’s quite an impressive album, and from it I learned to appreciate a whole new genre. Electro-music that tells a story and does not only sets a mood. I loved melody A.M their previous album but the symphonic qualities of a song like “Roysksoop forever “ made them one the bands I will continue to follow on the years to come

3)    Wait For me – Moby

I don’t know if it’s because ‘Last Night” his previous disappointed me so much but I really enjoyed and still enjoy from time to time “Wait for me” the music is gentle, smooth makes feel good. Moby is one that experimental artist that I admire

4)    The Boy who knew Too much – Mika

I have often neglected pop music, but this album redefines Pop, it doesn’t follow any particular trend. the fact that it is more mature than his freshman album ”Life in cartoon motion”, made it for me. Musically it’s daring the Caribbean flavored "bllue eyes" is simply one to be recommended.

5)    American Classic- Willie Nelson

Country music was never on my mind until Willie sang “Always on my mind”. The Album has a very jazzy production, it just feels right, and Willie’s Vocals are incredible. It’s a classic. Although it came out last year I also recommend “Two men with the blues” where Willie collaborates with Jazz giant Wytnon Marsalis to give a tip-top album

6)    Us - Brother Ali

Every year I hear one sentence from the media, hip-hop is death, but such or such artist revived or redefined or set a new benchmark. Hip-hop is not death but I guess it is out shadowed by hype trendy mainstream “Hip-Hop”. The underground have been producing incredible artists and Brother Ali is one of them. This album is probably not going to be remembered as being great probably because it’s not great but it’s soulful, brother Ali tells a story, gives a message and one that he believes in. it’s soulful Hip-Hop and I love it.

7)    Man on the moon- Kid Cudi

I am not sure how I should describe this album; I can surely not listen to it all the time. Quite on the sadder side, something I cannot always associate with Hip-Hop or do not want to feel at all time. This album feels like “808’s Heartbreaks” that Kanye released last  but less catchy. It tells a story that is less impulsive; the character analysis is quite impressive. It’s  an album I’ll go back to for some time since it has yet to be absorbed. He put on the moon with a listen but left me enough space to discover it the moon that is.

8)    The Blueprint 3- Jay-Z

Hit, hit album, it killed auto-tune, which I was never a big fan of. Showed me what it takes to run the town or even the map, put me on an empire state of mind and got decide to stay forever young. The singles are great; the album itself is highly descent. No I.D beat definitely killed auto-tune. This album is one of these arrogant cocky Hip-Hop albums that I Love to have on my list for that confidence boost.

9)    Zee Avi –Zee avi

A sweet album like this one is absolutely necessary to be on rotation. The album is sweet, the music smooth, the vocals soothing; it’s an album I can sleep too.  I can listen cooking on a Saturday afternoon or while having breakfast on a sunday morning. It’s soulful, photographic and did I say sweet.

10) Guns don’t kill people Lazers do –Major lazer

I know it’s weird, I know it’s different but there’s something about thins album that amuse me. It’s fun, it’s messed up, it’s dancehall and its new an original, a genre that needed something fresh. The album doesn’t remind me of anything I am use too. It’s violent sometimes, most definitely aggressive a bit revolutionary even. Not in the lyrics, that is rather on the empty but in the music, in the arrangements.

Honorable mentions: Wolfang Amadeus Phoenix- Phoenix

Fantaisies- Metric

Battle studies-John Mayer (Should be on top but not yet absorbed)

Love 2- Air

Not entirely sure where I got this; I think from my friend Percussionist and photographer Peter Salo. Some of you (and you know who are) have been in these situations before. I'm fortunate enough not have had it happen too often. But from a distance, it's quite enjoyable. :)

This Monday, we began a guest curation series at our Free Music Archive portal. Rather than attempt to distill the vast landscape of CC-licensed music on our own, we thought it better to reach out to those on the ground working to support and expose these type of artists in their given communities. What better way to start then with a selection of tracks from ccMixter admin/developer/mentor Victor Stone:

For all the activism in the Open Music movement, nothing pushes the ball forward like brilliant, evocative music. While there is plenty of underground music of all sub-genres at ccMixter, there is also a growing collection of mainstream, above-ground producers who understand the value of sharing as a means of boosting their own creativity along with their exposure.
