My Board of Advisors: Martha Stewart, Mr. Bean, Dave Ramsey and Seth Godin...
When faced with a decision that requires some thought, I go to my board of advisors because, based on their various experiences and expertise, I'm given a variety of answers to choose from.
For example, several months ago I was faced with a dilemma. The company I ordered my packaging from had changed the tins on me and now instead of a flat lid, the lid was raised. This meant I could not longer use my labels. I was stuck with an order of 100 tins and had to make a decision, so I went with my "What Would You Do?" question and imagined what each of my imaginary board members would do:- Martha Stewart (I look to her sense of style, quality and no-nonsense business talk): The raised tins would not be good enough for Martha. She'd insist I send them back.
- Mr. Bean (he's only there so I make sure I don't do what he would do): He would mail out empty tins to customers when they order, come up with a convincing sob story, and ask for handouts of spare change to be mailed back to me.
- Dave Ramsey (chosen for his financial expertise): He would advise me to take whichever route would keep the business out of debt. He might also get the supplier on the phone and insist on a refund, shipping included.
- Seth Godin (chosen for his marketing genius): would use the tins as a freebie for kids who come to my farmer's market booth. He'd fill them with Tic Tac's with a note tucked in that says "MadeOn Lotion is neither s-Tic-y nor Tac-ky ... try it today!"... hoping the parents would see it.
- My husband: would see it as a sunk cost, advising that I find a new packaging company, and let the children have at the unusable tins for their button, rock, roly poly, coin, and baby teeth collections.
What I did: I knew I couldn't use the tins, and I was hoping to get some money back. I called the packaging company and told them of my dilemma. Without needing to even ask, they promised to return my money, shipping included, and had a truck over the next day to pick up my tins. Because of their excellent customer service, I still use them for my other packaging needs, and I recommend them to others.
