If there is one thing that can cause tremendous damage to our finances, it would have to be irregular expenses.  These expenses do not happen every pay period or every month, but they often come up at some point during the year.

That may seem odd when you first look at it because we can, in fact, prepare for these costs.  The unfortunate fact, though, is that the majority of us do not plan for them at all.  Like those emergencies that often blindside us, these bills also catch us off guard.  They sneak up on us, and we find ourselves in a financial dilemma when it comes to figuring out how to pay them.

Let's review a couple of the more popular irregular expenses.  Since a lot of problems with home budgets happen during the holiday season, let's start off with the major expense involved in gift giving.

Gift giving

Every year, people go into debt because of the holidays.  The spirit of the season takes hold of the checkbook, and, before you know it, we are spending the entire new year paying off credit cards.

I am going to share a secret with you.  It is really important that you get this.  If you need to save this article for a reminder, please do so.

There are very few constants in my life, but there is one thing that I have noticed:  there has never been a year when Christmas did not fall on December 25.  I think I may be able to predict that Christmas will fall on December 25 again next year.  Don't quote me on it, but I just have this feeling.  As silly as it may sound, it amazes me how many people are out on December 23 and 24, pushing and shoving their ways through the stores, buying last-minute gifts.

In that same respect, I will never forget those 31 hours over 2 hot June days that I spent in the hospital waiting for my daughter to make her debut.  Most mothers that I talk to have fond memories of their delivery-room experiences.  Yet, parents scramble at the last minute every year, trying to put together their children's birthday parties.

I cannot understand the undue stress that many of us place on ourselves when shopping for Christmas and birthday gifts.  There is a simple solution:  plan ahead.  If we start preparing for Christmas and birthdays right after the last one, we actually have 12 months to plan and get everything right.

For example, if we want to spend $600 on gifts, then we know that we should be putting $50 each month into a gift envelope.  Then, as sales and gift ideas pop up throughout the year, the money is there to take advantage of the opportunity.

Expenses for the home

A second major irregular expense revolves around the home.  Whether you own or rent, there are always little things that come up.

For homeowners and renters alike, appliances and furniture may need to be replaced at some point.  Repairs and upgrades may need to be done.  These can be major budget breakers if not planned in advance.  Any of these expenses can possibly take a whole paycheck and set us back on our other normal monthly expenses.

If you know that you would like to replace the furniture or appliances, start putting money away each month toward that goal.  If you plan to spend $1200 on new furniture in four months, then plan to set aside $300 per month prior to the purchase.

The best way to avoid being thrown off course is to turn the expected but irregular expenses into regular monthly expenses.  Add them to the monthly budget, and set money aside every month until the funds are actually needed.

Turning these irregular expenses into regular expenses will not only enable you to stay on budget, but it will also keep you from accruing interest on a credit card as well as keep you from adding another bill to your budget.

[A Mother's Day Post from Amanda Steinberg of DailyWorth care of Get Rich Slowly << one of my favorite blogs of all time!]

Recession talk is everywhere, even on Mother’s Day. At work, at home, at the supermarket, at the library, at soccer games, and on play dates. Everyone hates this recession, and most everyone is being affected by it. Especially mothers. Why? Because we are on the front line of the budget wars. Let’s face it, as far as we have come in our efforts to shore up equality among the genders, moms are still largely in charge of household budgets for food, clothes, birthday presents, discretionary items, track-team uniforms, new tennis rackets, and so on.

So when the economy heads south and prices go north, it’s mom who usually decides what the family can do without. But instead of being the financial heavy on this day of all days, look for the silver lining: An opportunity to teach our children about financial responsibility. Maybe you’ve had to tighten your monthly budget or take a less expensive vacation, stay in and cook rather than eat out, forego new additions to your summer wardrobe or your house. Instead of just saying “no” without explanation or example, use the recession as an educational tool.

Here are some practical things you can do with your children from ages 4 to 18 to teach them about the value of money.

Age 4: Dollars and Sense Most four-year-olds can count, recognize letters and numbers; some have even started to read. What better time to introduce the concepts of an allowance, spending and saving? A couple of books, The Berenstain Bears Dollars and Sense and Alexander Who Used to Be Rich Last Sunday, illustrate just how quickly that weekly payout can burn a hole in your pocket if you’re not careful.

Age 7: Amortize Your Cherries The next time you’re in the supermarket with your kids during cherry season, buy a pound without choking on the price. That’s what Fran of Dallas, TX used to do. Then, when her hungry offspring started scarfing down the cherries, she would point out that they could either eat them all at once and have no more for a long while (with a gentle reminder of the price), or they could eat just a few cherries at a time and enjoy them for several days. You can also ask your children to help pay for those things they really want out of their allowance. They seem to have a better understanding of the value of money when they’re spending their own.

Age 12: Future Entrepreneur Encourage your child to start her own business. What better way to understand the ins and outs of cash flow? Some jobs for a 12-year-old include dog-walking, plant & animal care, mother’s helper, gardening and more. You’ll find that kids get more excited about earning money — and saving it for something special — when the enterprise and the earning power is theirs alone.

Age 15: Checks and Balances Take your son or daughter to the bank and have them open their very first checking and savings accounts. Remind them to bring cash or a birthday check to deposit — half in savings and half in checking. And then remind them that when the checking account runs dry, they’ll probably be paying a monthly maintenance fee until they put more money into the account. Just a little incentive to spend more thoughtfully.

Age 18: You Can Never Go Home Again… At 18, let your kids know that after college, they’re not allowed to move back in. Shelly of Philadelphia, PA told her daughters that when they graduated from college, there would be no moving back in with mom. Once they were done with school, they were on their own, because she respected their ability to find their own way. “I told them that my love was deep and constant, but that nudging them out of the nest to deal with life on their own would prepare them for anything that came along,” Shelly says. “Roots and wings are the most precious gift a parent can give.” Maybe you can’t go home again, but you can always stop by, have dinner and do your laundry.

Be an Example Kids can learn the value of money at pretty much any age. It just takes some thought, a little effort and plenty of credibility. That means we, as mothers, need to practice what we teach. If we expect our children to tread the path of good money sense and fiscal responsibility, then we have to set the example. Starting today, the day when we all celebrate our mothers and what they have done for us. How hard can it be? Okay, it may be hard. But the payoff will be a whole generation of kids who know how and when to save and spend — thanks to Mom.

Many of you may have read the recent post 15 ways stores trick you into spending money by MSN Money. If you have not, you should, it really is a great read. And if you can recognize the 15 tricks the article exposes you should be able to save a grip of money next time you visit the grocery store.  But, here is another secret (actually secret is a poor word choice  because I want you to tell everyone about it) you can use to save money every time you go to buy groceries - walk in with a budgeted amount of cash in an envelope.  Guess what, you are not allowed to spend any more money than the envelope contains.  This is a little budget help the envelope budgeting way!

I think the current mortgage crisis is evidence that money management ability is not on the list of "strengths" for most Americans. In other words, we all need a little help in cutting back on bad spending habits.  For decades, people have found that budget help with the envelope budget system.  Today's money management software allows you to ditch the physical envelopes in exchange for virtual envelopes, but the system has remained the same.

You can find literally thousands of success stories from individuals who have lived by the envelope budgeting system.  Of course, there are dozens of other budget programs, so go out and find one that works for you.  Remember, the stores can get as tricky as they like, but it will have absolutely no effect on your spending habits if you live within a personal budget.  Good luck.
