I just scored tix to see the UK premier of "It Might Get Loud".  It is going to be at the, star-studded, mind you, Hammersmith Apollo on the 15th December

Do you know of it?  It is a documentary about three guitar players from three generation and three very different backgrounds. Maybe you heard of these guys: Jimmy Page, The Edge & Jack White. The scene is set for these three gun slingers to meet on an empty sound stage, start talking about their own story about how got into the guitar and then, [cue the spontaneity] hopefully a three-pronged jam will breakout.

Here is the trailer:

I like rock documentaries much better than I like straight-up rock concert films. I want to learn something when I watch music. I love the stories behind songs and albums and artists. I sued to love the Behind the Music series on VH1. Even when they had an artist on I didn't particularly like, I still watched for the story.  Too bad it got drunk on hubris. I kept watching until I could no longer stand to see its show formula dry hump the legs of the performers until it turned into a parody of its former self.

Rock-Docco best done by someone who is passionate about the subject. Taylor Hackford is a great rock-docco/film director. He did Hail! Hail! Rock and Roll, the biting look the life and (fucked up) times of Chuck Berry.  He did his best to make a glory film about Chuck even thought Chuck gave him a shit fight of a time. The deluxe version has loads of great interviews with rock and blues legends.

There is a GREAT interview with a very, very drunk...absolutely shitfaced...Jerry Lee Lewis on the deluxe version that is worth the extra bread (couldn't find it anywhere on the web).

Scorsese is another one. While I didn't really like all that he did with his latest on the Stones ("Shine a Light"), he has done some damn good work, a la The Last Waltz" and  the Bob Dylan docco, "No Direction Home".

If you want to see a PHENOMENAL music documentary, watch "Respect Yourself: The Story of Stax Records" RIGHT NOW! If you don't fall in love with this, you have no soul. Here is a promo clip for it.  When I saw Steve Cropper & Duck Dunn (remaining MGs) in Sydney two years ago, they played this clip from the movie before the show. The MGs were opening for this young Aussie wanker-pop-star. He went to Memphis to blood suck the soul music legacy to supplement his lack of creative song-writing talent. Cropper produced his album and was supporting it on this punk's Aussie tour.

I guess you know who I was there to see.

They showed this to make sure the Aussie audience knew that they knew just who the hell was up there...MUSIC LEGENDS. My old buddy Nev, owner of Mojo Music in Sydney, used to say about Cropper (one of his heroes): "Steve Cropper...never played a bumb note in his life. Agreed, Nev.

Here is a list of all of my music DVDs. You'll see that the majority of them are rock-doccos:

because grady and i weren't able to get off of work early the wednesday before thanksgiving we decided to stop half-way down to mom and dad's and stay at a hotel.  we were worried how mojo would act, but luckily she only barked twice and then slept with us all night.  i think she liked the king bed!!  maybe the next time we move we'll have to upgrade from the queen to a king.

thanks dad for the points!  :)

beautiful advice from a friend today:

"Try taking a walk sometime to a bridge.  Look first at the water leaving from the bridge going away from you.  Either drop some leaves in the water or fix your gaze to things moving in the water away from you.  Transfer things you want to get rid of emotionally onto those leaves, and just let them go down the river.  Try to capture that image so you can remember it forever.  Whenever there are people, problems, worries or anything out of your control but that you no longer want to hold onto, gently think of them floating down that river.

Then switch your  view to the other side of the bridge.  Think of the water coming to you as life's journeys coming at you, of which you have little to no control. Yet there is something wonderful there in welcoming what comes naturally.  Prepare yourself to welcome these people, images, experiences like an open book.  You are in the present. Always.  Anything in the past or in the future belongs on the other side of the bridge. But this is you being "here" and free of those stresses.  The better you get at this, the more time you'll spend here - looking at the splendor and mystery of life.

That, to me, is the essence of Zen."

nothing worse than walking into the office on Monday morning, seeing your usually inspiring leader, and feeling like you'd rather be anyplace but here.  looking for signs from the universe.

I've had a really good run of not having to think too much about a chronic health issue that's plagued me on and off for over 20 years. And suddenly, with little warning, it's back.  Barely able to walk right now and feeling quite vulnerable and alone.  Drugs are at least a week away and hard to say whether they'll be effective - the problem seems pretty persistent this time.  My bike is taunting me from across the room...how far I am from riding it.   there is almost nothing that depresses me more than dealing with this. again.

normally mojo is the queen of the loveseat, but recently she's been sharing her thrown with king rudy!  it's funny, because now that i'm working from home all the time i get to see what they really do when we're not home.

observation 1: mojo and rudy cuddle A LOT!
observation 2: mojo and rudy like to sit outside in the backyard together
observation 3: everyone in the house likes a nice sunbath on the black leather sofa in the basement!

i can't imagine what life would be without any of our wonderful creatures!!  i think back to when i got stella and she was my little college buddy.  she was always the life of the party.  everyone wanted to pet her and love her.  then we got rudy...we were worried that him and stella wouldn't get along.  a couple months later they were cuddling on the couch.  then we decided to get mojo...we were worried that she would terrorize stella and rudy.  a couple months later mojo and rudy were playing together and cuddling.  still worried about mojo and stella since stella would always run and mojo would follow right behind.  but it's awesome now because they have both grown up so much and don't bother each other anymore.  they can be in the same room with nothing happening now!!

it's great, because now whatever room we're in, our pack of three are never more than 15 feet away from us.
