Punisher_11_SecondPrintingVariantWhen the news first broke about "FrankenCastle" and Marvel sent out the original PR images, many fans thought (or at least were hoping) that the House of Ideas was pulling our leg.  But when Punisher #11 his comic shops this month, we knew unfortunately that Marvel officially has lost it's mind... after a fight with Daken and suppossedly killed, the Punisher gets "reanimated".  How's this for worst idea of 2009?

Aniboom and Marvel have chosen their Motion Comics Competition finalists who will compete for $10K! Here are the Hulk vs Wolverine finalists!

Just to bring those of you who haven't been following this up-to-date. Marvel (the biggest and best comic book publisher) and AniBoom (the virtual animation studio) teamed up to have a contest to see who could make the most entertaining & imaginative motion comic while staying true to the comic book feel. Marvel provide the images from the comic book, the script & audio from two of the greatestest comics books: "Nova" & "Hulk vs Wolverine".

For more details on the specifics of how the contest was/is run check out http://www.aniboom.com/Competition/Marvel/about.

Here are the three Hulk vs Wolverine video that made it as finalists! Which is your favorite?

"The Worst Part About Getting Your Memories Back" by BurningCold

This is a very solid and clean entry. There is a lot of detail here that can easily go unnoticed because it is so well done: Wolverine's breath, falling stones, and a great touch when Wolverine uppercuts Hulk and blood splats on the camera lens. I really liked the timing after the Hulk drops the boulder on himself. You almost start to feel like Wolverine. Hey, maybe the Hulk is down... just to watch him get up and crush you. I liked the transitioning near the end to illustrate that Wolverine may be just dreaming which really wraps it up with how began the video with a negative (b/w) effect. Small details make the difference with this video.

"The Strongest" Bigjohn3d

Very cool 3Dish work! Definitely the most original I've seen of all the Hulk vs Wolverine entries. I would have thought that this was against the rules to change the images so much, but apparently not (since it made it to the finals) which is great to be able to see such a different take! Its a little more cartoony than the other videos but makes quite the impact to see it like this. I almost feel like this should be in a Hulk vs Wolverine video game. This video really broadens the idea of motion comics! It could prove to be the future of motion comics!

"Fragmented Memories" by guicho

This is a Wildcard entry. Guicho appropriated renamed it "Fragmented Memories". I love the way he flashes a whole bunch of panels in a row: It keeps the pace going and it really reflects how you see/remember memories. I think this entry does a great job of letting the images tell the story. You almost don't need the audio to follow perfectly what Wolverine is thinking. It got weaker (in originality) towards the end, but I think it has a great shot at winning.

I'd like to know your thoughts of these animations. Which do you think should win?

I remember pretty clearly sitting around the lunch table in 7th grade with my fellow geeks-in-training and having the discussion of whether DC was ripping off Marvel or vice-versa.  It was pretty evident with a comparison between the huge cross-overs Secret Wars and Super Powers (the big event was not nearly as popular as it is these days) and with the token African-American hero in the major super hero team (Iron Man / Green Lantern), that clearly one of the companies was taking it's lead from the other.  This conversation has been echoes now for next twenty some odd years with the big two trying to out-event the other.  The most recent rip-off failure that comes to mind would be when DC tried to copy Marvel's Ultimate success with their All-Star line, which mostly flopped within a year. But I think Marvel has gone leaps and bounds beyond the lameness of the All-Star line-up.  The tagline of the new X-book event X-Necrosha is "The Dead Rise", dealing with dead heroes and villains being raised as zombies to fight the living.  Where might have I seen something like this recently.... hmmmmm.  Anyone?  Anyone?  Geoff Johns, Dan Didio and anyone else over at DC must have literally laughed for hours at this johnny-come-lately attempt from Marvel to copy the success of Blackest Night.
