Another week, another batch of tunes to keep you moving along...

Last week, I slacked on picking up the Blakroc album (probably because music almost never drops on a Friday), and boy was I disappointed in myself. A hip-hop album featuring Mos Def, Ludacris, The RZA, Q-Tip, Pharoahe Monch and ODB (and even Jim Jones?) produced by The Black Keys? You guessed it: its certified dope.
The LP opens up with "Coochie" featuring ODB and Ludacris, and what a way to get things jumping off! The beat is heavy and has just the right groove to suck you in immediately. As off-the-wall as we all know ODB was, his verses on this are surprisingly on-beat and on-point - a welcome change - while still holding true to the craziness that we all love Ol' Dirty for (R.I.P.)... and as always, Luda comes thru delivering a fun and party-filled 16 bars. There's been something about Luda from day one that appealed to me; his voice, flows, and the vibe he gives off always seems to do no wrong. Mos Def is featured on two of the tracks on the LP, and as one of my favorite MCs, he can do no wrong. Even the usually-too-heavy-to-listen-too-long M.O.P. member Billy Danze shows up on two tracks, both of which aren't too abrasive not to play on repeat. Nicole Wray, who my old friend Feller posted about on One Stupid Mop (with his review of the LP) is on 4 of the tunes, and her voice breathes a real soul into the tracks, just amping up the cool. This one comes highly recommended, and with good reason. The album also features Raekwon and Noe, and was conceptualized by Damon Dash, of previous Rocafella fame.

Tuesday saw the release of the newest EP from Hotflush head honcho Scuba (Paul Rose), entitled Aesaunic. Scuba's sound has always been a little off-the-beaten-path for what you're used to hearing from the dubstep scene, as are most of the releases from Hotflush... and it still remains one of my favorite labels out there. This EP sees Scuba doing something a little closer to 4/4 stuff, though you can hear his signature melodic, dreamy sounds throughout. Some out there might juxtapose this with some of Burial's stuff, and I can understand it. The echoes and delays on some of his drums and the sounds are Burial-esque, but Scuba's sound is uniquely his own. If you're looking for something to lounge out to, and still need something to keep you listening intently, this is one to check out for sure. I forsee a tune or two off this EP finding its way into an upcoming mixset.

In the past, I haven't really dropped singles or random one-off tracks into this blog, but as I find myself coming across more and more added to my library, here are some things floating around the interwebs that you may want to check out:

This one has been posted all over the place, but I'm gonna re-post it anyway: Steve Aoki remixed Drake's newest chartbuster "Forever," and I'm sure if my local area had even the most remote EDM scene, you'd be hearing it for weeks to come. I've read mixed reviews on it, but I guarantee, like it or not, this one will get asses moving on the dancefloor. Sure, the verses have been chopped, and speeding Drake, Weezy and Kanye up while slowing Eminem down might not make sense to all of us, but play this one for the ladies - I promise they'll appreciate it.

"Forever" has also gotten the remix treatment from Travis Barker... And this version is just sick. Travis has been putting his touch on alot of different things recently, and his work ethic and prowess working in multiple genres is just awe-inspiring. This post quotes him talking about doing the remix, and supplied me the video posted below.

Speaking of Travis, the word of DJ AM Nike Dunks surfaced this week. A tribute to the recently passed DJ, they're not my style, but still pretty dope. Seeing this post got me thinking again about AM and had me pull out his mixtapes with Barker. Both editions, entitled Fix Your Face, are a testament to how good a DJ he was, and how he pushed borders and genre bounced on his own, not to mention going way outside the box to team up with Barker on the TRV$DJAM project. I really regret never seeing him do his thing live, but I'm sure he's destroying heavenly dancefloors day in and day out.
TRV$DJAM - Fix Your Face (Volumes 1 and 2)

Lastly, I want to share something from khal's Dubplate Digest blog I mentioned last week. Now, I'm not a fan of Christmas carols (especially since they've been pumping through the PA at work since November 1), but if you're gonna listen to one, why not make it a drum and bass remix, right?? Mariah Carey gets the remix treatment from Blade... and you never know; this one may find itself being a closer tune the next time I play out somewhere in the St. Augustine area (just for kicks).

Take care everyone! Till next time...

OK. Previously I sang in public. I made the mistake of not recording some of it so Future Me would believe Present Me. Anyway, that's pretty easy since I will never ever see those goggly-eyed strangers again.

What's a million times harder is to sing for someone you know. Especially someone you care about. Someone whose opinion of you matters.

Step 1: I will sing for Boyfriend. But not live though. Because I know I don't have a pretty singing face. And I will die if I make horrible faces while I squeak in front of Boyfriend.

Step 2: In the flurry of the moment I recorded my version of Clarkson's A Moment Like This which I would so sing at my wedding if I ever wed, and if I ever have the nerve to offend my lovely guests and possibly induce New Husband to whip out the PreNup.

Step 3: Here it is. He won't hear it til later today.

Disclaimer: I do not have Clarkson's voice AT ALL so please don't expect high-octane shrieks. I spared you that.

"This young woman sang this song in her PJs, in her bed, cross-legged and hugging her pillow. She fears imminent Death should Boyfriend guffaw as he is wont to do upon listening to her sing. Her vocal chords are crossed."

A Moment Like This_To Koen - Nurhayati

Step 4: If you know me, please pretend you never heard this. Shh.

Mariah Carey

Mariah Carey has spent an amazing $1.5 million while in London, while waiting to perform on XFactor and she hasn't even started the party that she is said to be having after her performance.

According to Britain’s Daily Mail newspaper, the pop superstar splashed out $400,000 for bedrooms on the entire top floor of The Dorchester hotel, $24,000 to hire a Rolls-Royce and a Bentley, thousands of dollars on first-class flights and thousands more for her bash at Jalouse nightclub in Mayfair on Thursday to promote her new albumMemoirs Of An Imperfect Angel.

Guests drank $2,400-a-bottle champagne while watching her music videos on a big screen.

“Mariah wanted a VIP area complete with white flowers, cupcakes, a white carpet and an $170,000 diamond-encrusted ice bucket,” a source said.“There was $500,000 worth of Angel champagne on the tables.”

How much would this money benefit people that don't even have enough for food and drink! And she's prancing around with butterfly's coming out of her ass trying to promote her album that truely sucks!

I'm in LA kicking it with Ibn and his fighter.  Unfortunately, the man hhis fighter was suppose to fight cancelled an hour before they were suppose to get in the ring.  So we are just kicking it in his room and he shows me this.  I'm going to hell for watching this, laughing at this, and sharing it with you to laugh at and share.  God forgive me.

Since he's been watching Yo Gabba Gabba, my 2-year-old son, X, has developed some wicked beatboxing talent. Sometimes he and I sit at the table and have beatbox contests. I rarely win because X has skillz.

This morning, I walked in on X dancing to Mariah Carey's "Fantasy" with my wife, KayEm. I didn't protest because this song has the most creative rhyme ever uttered in hip-hop (Me and Mariah/Go back like babies and pacifyas. - OBD). Eventually, I had to intervene because too much Mariah Carey is not good for anybody.

"Yo, X," I interjected. "You wanna kick it old school?"

"Ol Kool," he repeated.

Any old school hip-hop rotation has to start with Run-D.M.C. I queued "Sucker M.C.s" on the iPod and pressed play. X immediately protested.

"No, no," he yelled. I was shocked. What son of mine doesn't like Run-D.M.C? I considered calling Maury Povich, but my wife wouldn't have found the humor in that.

Maybe Run-D.M.C. wasn't old school enough for him, I thought. I decided to shift gears. I searched through my iPod until I found Mantronix's "Fresh is the Word." X was excited when he heard the hi-hat intro, but he quickly lost interest when MC Tee started rapping.

"No, no," he protested. But this time he started beatboxing.

"Oh," I said. "You want hear some beatboxing?"

"Yes!" he responded.

"I have something that I think you will like." I scrolled through the iPod again until I found the perfect song. "Here's your buddy, Biz Markie." I said as "Make the Music With Your Mouth Biz" blasted from the stereo.

"No, no," he protested again. Now I was confused. He loves watching Biz Markie on Yo Gabba Gabba, but today, Biz got the "Gas Face." I was perplexed. If he didn't want to hear Biz Markie, what did he want to listen to?

Doug E. Fresh? No!

Blake Lewis? Hell, no!

As I sat there watching him beatbox, the lightbulb finally went off. I frantically searched my iPod until I found what X was waiting for. The speakers boomed with the sounds of "Brrrrrr, stick 'em. Ha ha ha, stick 'em. Brrrrrr, stick 'em. Ha ha ha, stick 'em. Brrrrrr, stick 'em. Ha ha ha, stick 'em. Gonna rock the beat box and a fresh, funky rhythm."

X pumped his fist and yelled, "Yes!" He started beatboxing with the song and displayed a littler swagger while doing so.

All this time, my son was a Fat Boys fan and I didn't even know it. I had to play the song at least five times, before X grew tired of it.

Sorry, Biz. It looks like Buffy is the real Human Beat Box. But in a few years, I think X will take the title.

Only 30 minutes yesterday but a full workout today. I'm back in the swing even if my mind isn't in it. Work has it racing, chasing, trying to predict what new crazy the next day will bring. It's pointless though. So, as I said earlier this week, I will continue to wear my zen-breezy cap of elasticity. We'll bend and flex. Roll with the changes. Accept the new and keep bouncing.

Keep it movin' y'all. It's the weekend.

Christina Aguilera says, "Your best quality is that you're loving me 4 me."

As music sales continue to drop like they’re not so hot throughout the industry, Island Def Jam Music Group is jamming on a new business model: integrating brands into artists’ CD booklets.

The first deal, created for the Mariah Carey release Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel on Sept. 15, is a 34-page co-production with Elle magazine that includes lifestyle ads from Elizabeth Arden, Angel Champagne, Carmen Steffens, Le Métier de Beauté and the Bahamas Board of Tourism. Providing the experiment goes well, the label is eyeing bigger brand deals for booklets of CDs by Rihanna, Bon Jovi, Kanye West and other artists.
