Yeah, I got a new Macbook Pro. It happened in much the same way I ended up with an iPhone: the previous techno-gadget broke. I wasn't in the market for an iPhone, since I'm the one in charge of paying the phone bill, but my crappy free t-mobile phone died. The very next day (and $600 later) we were bona fide iPhone users. I got a new laptop because Kyle's ancient Dell (which has smelled like burning candles for the last two years and was really only being used to synch his iPhone anyway) finally bit the dust. (Sure, he did help it along a *wee bit*, but it really was time for it to be put out of its misery.) So I got a new Macbook Pro, Kyle has made the "switch" to my old Macbook Pro and I'm out $2500. I love/hate new techno-toys. *Sigh*

So a little annoyed with Apple today.

I asked for people to give me Apple store gift cards for Christmas and birthday gifts over the last couple of years - this was so it would make it easier for people so that they wouldn't need to go online and get confused with getting a giftcard for the online store.

I went in to the Apple store today to see how customizable the computers are in-store, and they only do RAM and matte screens.

Which SUCKS, because I wanted to upgrade to a 3.06 GHz processor on the top-of-the-line 15" and a faster hard drive.

I guess the silver lining is that getting a replacement hard drive doesn't void AppleCare, so I can always change it down the road if needs be. Just a little annoying that I'm being hampered from getting my "dream machine", but I suppose I'll end up saving about $350 and still have a good amount of power (it'll be 2.8 GHz).

I also picked up some trades at lunch:
  • Usagi Yojimbo vol. 20: Glimpses of Death
  • Usagi Yojimbo vol. 21: The Mother of Mountains
  • The Boys vol. 5: Herogasm
  • The Immortal Iron Fist Vol. 5: Escape from the Eighth City
I foresee great reading in my weekend!

And in a total show of faith in customers, the guys at the Hairy Tarantula gave me a copy of Usagi vol. 19 to hold on to when I complained that the copy I had had 8 pages misprinted and put in upside down. All I need to do is bring the misprinted copy in the next time I'm in. That's pretty awesome customer service.

All in all, a fairly productive lunch. I'll eat later - my lunch is actually defrosting on my desk.

Jonathan Ive speaks on the brilliance of Apple design [Video]

Featured, News

Objectified is a 2009 documentary about Industrial Design, and Apple design guru Jonathan Ive was naturally a perfect choice to be interviewed for the film.  Ive, of course, has behind some of Apple’s most memorable designs, such as the iPod, the first iMac and its subsequent updates, and the iPhone as well.  Below, check out Ive’s contribution to Objectified where he discusses the impetus behind what he feels signifies good design.

Solid stuff, and one of the more telling quotes, we feel, is when Ive discusses the design of the iPhone:

a lot of what we seem to be doing in a product like that is actually getting design out of the way, and I think when forms develop with that sort of reason, and they’re not just arbitrary shapes, it feels almost inevitable, it feels almost un-designed, it feels almost like “of course it’s that way, I mean, why wouldn’t it be any other way?”

Indeed, when you look at an iPhone, the design seems so blatantly obvious that it’s sometimes hard to appreciate Apple’s design prowess until you hold and use devices from other manufacturers.  There’s a quote from the under-appreciated TV Show Futurama that aptly describes Apple design - “When you do things right, people won’t be sure you’ve done anything at all.”

And lastly, make sure to get a good look at the Apple design facility wherein Ive is interviewed - it’s probably the most extensive ‘tour’ of the place you’ll ever see.

simply talented.

Liebes Bergvolk, wie ist das so mit der Höhenluft? Führt die zu solchen Einfällen? Wenn ja, werde ich weiterhin Urlaub an der Nordsee machen.

Objectified is a feature-length documentary about our complex relationship with manufactured objects and, by extension, the people who design them. It’s a look at the creativity at work behind everything from toothbrushes to tech gadgets. It’s about the designers who re-examine, re-evaluate and re-invent our manufactured environment on a daily basis. It’s about personal expression, identity, consumerism, and sustainability.

Below a snippet from the docu featuring Jonathan Ive, as he talks about the Mac, and specifically the Unibody design of the MacBook/MacBook Air & MacBook Pro.
