The long tail of search demand has been around since the dawn of web search and, since that time, search marketers have been attempting to tap into the powerful stream that high quantities of unique content can provide. I recently came across some great data from Hitwise (about 1 year old, but still highly relevant) showing off just how substantive the long tail can be. Bill Tancer's post - Sizing Up the Long Tail - gives some stats:

...the head and body together only account for 3.25% of all search traffic! In fact, the top terms don’t account for much traffic:

• Top 100 terms: 5.7% of the all search traffic
• Top 500 terms: 8.9% of the all search traffic
• Top 1,000 terms: 10.6% of the all search traffic
• Top 10,000 terms: 18.5% of the all search traffic

This means if you had a monopoly over the top 1,000 search terms across all search engines (which is impossible), you’d still be missing out on 89.4% of all search traffic. There’s so much traffic in the tail it is hard to even comprehend. To illustrate, if search were represented by a tiny lizard with a one-inch head, the tail of that lizard would stretch for 221 miles.

Top 10,000 Search Terms by Percentage of All Search Traffic

The truth is my research is still greatly understating the true size of the tail because:
• The Hitwise sample contains 10 million U.S. Internet users and a complete data set would uncover much larger portions of the long tail.
• The data set I used filtered out adult searches.
• I only looked at 3-months worth of data (which were some of the slower months for search engines).

To help put this in perspective, I made a few spiffy charts that can help to illustrate these points:

Long Tail Search Traffic Distribution

In this first chart, you can see a representation of Hitwise's data from the four chunks Bill broke down.

The Search Demand Curve

In this next representation, I'm showing the classic "long tail" style curve, but color-coded to help show the various areas of keyword demand. Note that you could conceptually say that the 9,000 of the top 10,000 terms should technically fit into the chunky middle. Bill classified them thusly in his post, but I tend to think that at those demand levels, we're still talking about "head" of the curve figures.

For both of these graphics, there's a large, high-res version available by clicking the chart. You can find lots, lots more on our Free Charts page :-)

Not sure why Apple has waited today to announce 100k apps in the App Store, which we and other announced  about a week ago

Of course this is a fantastic achievement and Apple does not forget to quote top success like T-Pain app

But what Apple is missing in their PR is the fact that the BIG majority of apps don't enjoy that success

Please take again a look at this stat we provided regarding the %of apps that are installed in more than 50% of the users...The conclusion is obvious

The store is built for hits. Not for the rest.

Don't look too far for the explanation. it is mentioned  by Apple

Apple continues to improve search and discovery with new features including Genius for Apps, App Store Essentials selections, sub category listings and more valuable customer reviews

So let's see how they play it out. At Appsfire we believe the solution is not in the App Store or even the Genius. And this is why we are growing day after day.

"Long Tail") dieser Kurve.

Shawn Fanning’s infamous 1998 project (Napster to the unfamiliar) was my first taste of technological disruption in music.   Since then, the business model for record labels has steadily eroded: physical media sales continue to drop, although at a slowing rateAnd despite ridiculous RIAA lawsuits and high-profile cases like The Pirate Bay, piracy remains normative: a new study of college kids finds, “kids know that piracy is illegal, but they do it anyway.”

With the music business in freefall, what positive effects has technology brought to music?  A huge one is social discovery.  Facilitated through social networks like Facebook or services like Last.fm, Pandora or imeem, it’s never been easier to share, discover and enjoy new artists.  Still, the monetization of these services has been a long, slow struggle as they experiment with combinations of advertising, subscriptions, and premium access.

In additional to social technologies, the longtail brings promise to the music industry.  What does this look like today?  Recent research grounds us from the hype:

  • “U.S. album sales in 2008: More than 115,000 albums were released, but only 110 sold more than 250,000 copies, a mere 1,500 topped 10,000 sales, and fewer than 6,000 cracked the 1,000 barrier.” - Chicago Tribune
  • A study last year conducted by members of PRS for Music, a nonprofit royalty collection agency, found that of the 13 million songs for sale online last year, 10 million never got a single buyer and 80 percent of all revenue came from about 52,000 songs. That’s less than one percent of the songs. - New York Times

In other words, most of us still listen to and support only a few mainstream artists.  Outside the online world of social discovery, the incumbent, defensive power of labels remains strong: terrestrial radio, MTV and BET devote the majority of airtime to the same top 40 songs.  Whenever I listen to the radio, it feels like the same 12 songs.

How can we shift the music industry’s archaic model to be more consumer-friendly and profitable?

  • Embrace music as promotional, even free, content...  According to Wired, “The best-selling MP3 album at Amazon in 2008 was Nine Inch Nails’ Ghosts I-IV, which was released free...”  This may not be viable for all bands, because NIN (and Radiohead with their similar In Rainbows experiment) already has a massive audience.  But the ease of distributing content illegally cannot be ignored.  Heck, even DRM is easy to break.  Make content free and link to merchandising and live concerts.
  • ...and extra(s)! extra(s)!  Fans want more than an mp3.  Take a cue from the iTunes LP and give us add-ons like song lyrics, extra tracks and high-quality album art.  We'll pay more, if it's worth it.  Despite the $250 price tag, many diehard fans will buy the recently released box set of the Beatles discography.
  • Be social. Rather than fight social music services with paralyzing royalty rates, see these services as your allies.  Use innovative social platforms like those offered by CultureJam to promote music on Twitter by creating a sense of 'social currency.'
  • Don't ignore the longtail.  Although mostly potential to-date, the longtail is as vibrant as it ever has been.  And will continue to grow.  In tandem with the eventual death of mainstream advertising, the value of niche will become ever-important our flat world.

The gist of 1,000 True Fans can be stated simply:

A creator, such as an artist, musician, photographer, craftsperson, performer, animator, designer, videomaker, or author - in other words, anyone producing works of art - needs to acquire only 1,000 True Fans to make a living.

A True Fan is defined as someone who will purchase anything and everything you produce. They will drive 200 miles to see you sing. They will buy the super deluxe re-issued hi-res box set of your stuff even though they have the low-res version. They have a Google Alert set for your name. They bookmark the eBay page where your out-of-print editions show up. They come to your openings. They have you sign their copies. They buy the t-shirt, and the mug, and the hat. They can't wait till you issue your next work. They are true fans.
