Engaged, Connected and Grateful...

Alex Hawkinson contributed to Social Media Today with a rather fitting post on his reasons for being thankful for Social Media.  And naturally this got me thinking on why I may be thankful for Social Media too.  I choose to refer to Social Media as Engaged or Connected Media rather because that's exactly what it is - Engaging and Connecting.

Engaged Media brings people together.  Engaged Media gives us the opportunity to (re)connect with relevant and significant others (individuals, groups, cultures, brands, consumers, even countries) that may share or invest in similar interests.

So what else can be we thank Engaged Media for, other than:

• providing a platform for connecting
• abilities to establish meaningful, relevant relationships
• establishing conversations directly with brands and businesses, whether they like it not
• reshaping traditional media

In addition to the above, I am also grateful to Engaged Media for*:

• granting people and communities the opportunity to become content creators in their own right (although quality assessment and regulation is another issue all together) and being able to create a voice that has the potential to be heard, e.g. blogs, mash-ups, video and audio, and ebooks
• providing networks and a means to share content over bounders, boundaries and through brick-walls, and breaking down any barriers to communication that previously existed in hindering these attempts to send these message out, e.g. blogs (such as Wordpress, Typepad, LiveJournal and Blogger), social networking services (such as LinkedIn, Facebook, MySpace, Bebo, FriendFeed), video sharing (such as YouTube, Vimeo, Metacafe, Hulu, and Ustream), photo sharing (such as Flickr, Picasa, Panoramio, Snapfish, and Shutterfly), location-based and geo-social networking services (such as Brightkite, Foursquare, Google Maps), microblogging and life-streams (such as Twitter, Posterous, Tumblr, Plurk, Jaiku), and social bookmarking and search (such as Newsvine, StumbleUpon, Delicious, Technorati, Afrigator, Diigo, Digg, and Muti)
• reshaping how people, businesses and brands connect, communicate, interact, and collaborate together making our global community local, e.g. real-time communication and collaboration (such as wikis, Wikipedia, Skype and Google Wave), Enterprise 2.0 collaboration (such as Microsoft SharePoint, Socialtext, Oracle Beehive, and Lotus Connections), community-based reviews (such as Yelp and Top Ten Reviews), web-based community group and social network creation (such as Big Tent, Ning and Google Groups), virtual worlds (such as Second Life, Kaneva and Active Worlds), and MMORPGs (such as World of Warcraft, Perfect World and Evony)

There are so many other reasons that can be highlighted to why Engaged Media is such a great tool - not too mention the impact and enrichment it brings to our daily lives.

В GoogleReader оказалось очень удобно читать ЖЖ (и не) френдленту, так смотришь на посты и щелкаешь по аккаунтам - намного эффективнее стандартной простыни. Туда же добавил ленту из posterous (правда читать там пока некого почти). А вот tumblr до сих пор не умеет rss генерить с дашборда, и не только не умеет, но еще и прикрыл единственный проект, который этим занимался >_< Косячнеги.

Huge Traffic Surge on the HikiCulture Forums

Since posting a popular article on Reddit, the HikiCulture forums have been receiving a huge amount of traffic.

Almost immediately after submitting the article (note: the word 'Reddit' above is hot-linked to the Reddit article), I had noticed a surge in traffic on the forums. At first, the traffic-surge wasn't dramatic, but there was still a greater amount of guests than the site normally has. The average amount of guests we tend to have on the forums is one or two people (often there are none though). Last night, there were around 14 people online when I had finally decided to go to sleep.

This morning, I got up, brewed some coffee, and logged into HikiCulture. Once I had logged in, I couldn't believe my eyes. The amount of guests on the site was at around 70 people or so. Very suddenly though, this number increased even higher. At the highest, the number went up to 105! The previous record for the most users online at once was 19. This beats the old record by 5x.

There have been a lot of registrations because of all this traffic to the site. I hope to see more soon.

The Forum Has Been Rather Dead Lately, But Things Have Been Fine

The forum has been rather dead lately; I'm not sure why. Things are going fine nonetheless though.

The IRC (Internet Relay Chat) channel steadily has ten or so users in it, the posts on the forum have been of high-quality. and (like always), there has been absolutely no flaming whatsoever on the boards. Besides having a random troll show up in the IRC channel a week or so ago (one who decided to spoof my identity), there has been nothing that has gone wrong.

When the troll showed up, Quasar had invited an IRCop to the channel to take care of him/her. This wasn't really necessary since banning the troll would have been easy enough to do because the troll's host-name had a constant non-dynamic part. Quasar didn't realize this and figured that the troll was using a well-encypted connection to connect to the IRC-channel. Anyway, the troll was 'taken care of' and has not returned.
