Amazing presentation by Paul Debevec demonstrating the technology behind digitally constructing a human face. Photographers take note on how the lighting on the face was used here.

Using a face-scanning sphere with 156 white LED's to light her face to ensure perfect lighting. They used polarizers to block the specular light reflected off of her face.

They turned the polarizers to get the specular light to show the texture of the face (skin pores and muscles...etc.) to create the mold/map of the face which is used to make animating the face as real as possible

The system used in that presentation is called Light Stage 5. You can see another demo here of Light Stage 6 here

So...

"Despite lasting longer and being more efficient than both incandescent and CFL bulbs, LEDs haven’t caught on because of their sky-high prices. But now Panasonic wants to bring LEDs to the mainstream — at least in Japan — with a 60-watt household bulb that the company claims can last up to 19 years, or 40 times longer than incandescent bulbs."

- Great news, we're sure to be seeing more LED products reaching mainstream over the next few years.

Visible Light Solar provides businesses, municipalities and educational facilities with retrofit as well as new solar/LED lighting solutions that save money, reduce maintenance costs, and are environmentally sustainable. Visible Light Solar is a member of the Illuminating Engineering Society, US Green Building Council and the International Dark-Sky Association. The company is backed by Noribachi, a venture accelerator firm (www.noribachi.com). " target="_blank">Visible Light Solar Technologies Company, has been selected by the City of Santa Fe Mayor’s Office and the Parks & Public Works Department as the top local design for solar/LED lighting throughout Frenchy Field Park.  The site of a historic former dairy farm, Frenchy Field Park is a recreation area landscaped with native wildflowers that links to the Santa Fe River and the City’s open space network of trails and parks

Qnuru’s line of landscape lighting products combine efficient LED technology, advanced solar engineering and integrated control systems. Each lighting fixture is designed to illuminate architectural features, walkways and plantings; all are Dark Sky compliant with non-glare directional down lighting for parks, campuses, cityscapes and parking areas. Digital microcontrollers provide intelligent power management and a full complement of features that can be custom selected and wirelessly programmed.

“In this, Santa Fe’s 400 Anniversary year, we are thrilled to be able to help design a new park lighting fixture that reflects the beauty of our city’s natural setting and harnesses the abundant sunshine with which we are so blessed,” said David Dross, Santa Fe mayor.  “As we look forward to our next 400 years, we know that it will be environmentally sustainable solutions like Qnuru’s solar and LED lighting fixtures which will help preserve this precious planet.”

According to Fabian Chavez, Director of the city’s Parks, Trails and Watershed Division, “The lighting system we commissioned from Qnuru is the first in the country to feature solar and LED technologies in a system that is free from the grid and powerful enough to illuminate large public parks and trailheads where no electrical infrastructure exists.  We expect it to set a national standard that other cities and parks will emulate.”

“The new Qnuru lighting fixtures for Frenchy Field Park give customers a completely integrated solution that has the least human imprint,” said Dee Dennis, CEO of Visible Light Solar, Qnuru’s parent corporation.  “Not only are these lights Dark Sky compliant but they give Santa Fe a solution that respond to concerns about energy usage.  We’re out to change outdoor lighting with our solar and LED solutions, ensuring the right lighting for safety while reducing overall environmental impacts.  That’s a win, win, win.”

Naming Contest

As part of the unveiling of the new Qnuru light fixture design for Santa Fe’s Frenchy Field Park, the city’s Public Works Department, in conjunction with Qnuru, are launching a contest among school age children to officially name the new light fixture.  The student whose name is selected will win an Amazon Kindle ebook and $100 worth of downloads.  Details on the contest will be posted on the city website, www.santafenm.gov, in the coming weeks.
