Kelly's fireplace trick
On Saturday, 07 November 2009, I received from Kelly this postcard of the north entrance to the Menil Collection. On the left side is the sculpture "Charmstone" (1991) by Michael Heizer.

Our first morning show in Cape Breton. We are all very excited about our first audience here. We arrive at Boularderie School bright and early, the drive to the school really woke us up... very pretty. And the view from the school is breath-taking.
Ms. Penny is eager and all set for us when we burst through the school doors.
We are shown to the gym and get an estimate of the number of students. David usually decides which direction is best to face while performing. Then the set comes in and the props and mysterious fabrics and marvelous gadgets are pulled from plain looking boxes. The tent raising is always a team effort, with Kenny directing the operation.
Then the cast finishes the set up and takes some time to get ready as actors. Kenny and Kelly each have their own ‘warm up’ they do. It's very like athletes before a big game as they flex and stretch and in addition they prepare their voices for the show. With months on the road we can’t afford an injury like a sprained ankle or a pulled muscle. And an actor losing a voice on a tour is something that just doesn’t work. In those big gyms, in cold mornings, with lots of quick dialogue from many characters the unprepared voice will take a beating.
Frequent check ins are taking place with the principal and school as we confirm when the kids will be coming to the gym.
We are always careful to mostly hide the ‘magic’ from the show. We try to keep each character secret until they enter in the story itself.
So while the cast of characters is behind the stage, the actors are very visible in their brightly coloured shirts as they greet the students. Each class files in and goes to their place on the floor in the gym.
The show starts and the actors all get lost in telling the story and don’t realize how the show is going until they catch their breath in the bows after the last note of music has been played. And it was a great show! Thanks, Ms. Penny and Boularderie.

Welcome to Cape Breton!! We have a lovely place to stay here. This is the view from just across the road from our place. What you can’t see is the pair of Eagles who hunt this river. So beautiful.
This is Kenny’s old stomping grounds and he assures Kelly and me that we are going to have a great time.
Already the weather is growing milder, which is a real pleasure as we know we are driving closer and closer to winter.
The company finds some time to relax and recover from our super exciting week in Newfoundland. Home-cooked meals, family visits and Scattagories [a really fun board game], even David had a GREAT salad!

First a late night of packing our bags and un-making the homes we had made in Newfoundland. When you are traveling it takes very little time for a place you are staying to become comfortable, and even after such a short time it can be hard to move on.
In the morning, however, we were all excited about our new adventures. So we head out for our special show at Bishop Feild School. As we approach Bishop Feild, we are amazed at how beautiful the old building is. And inside the place we get to do the show is a lovely old auditorium. The stage even had FOOTLIGHTS!!
Ms. Gard-Puddeste welcomed Kenny, Kelly, and David into the lovely school, and the students were warm and sweet. Thanks for the hugs!! Lots of questions about how the giant works, how the troll works really showed how much positive energy the school puts on Arts. Thanks you all for being so welcoming and for the milk and snacks!
Woo-hoo, Bishop Feild!
I just got this spontaneous feeling that I'm going to find a girlfriend soon. It may be completely false, but mix tapes are always good.
This is the mix tape I will make for her:

Bump'n'Grind by R. Kelly
Daylight by Matt & Kim
Wishing Well by The Airborne Toxic Event
Secret Crowds by Angels and Airwaves
I Go Blind by Hootie and the Blowfish

Underneath It All by the No Doubt
Linger by the Cranberries
