On Friday, November 6 I joined 2 million Yankees fans in lower Manhattan to watch the parade in the Canyon of Heroes.

A beautiful clear blue sky was visible where we joined to celebrate the victors of America's favorite pasttime:

While I viewed the parade on the packed sidewalk, others viewed it where they could:

And even from their office windows:

There is nothing like ticker tape in autumn:

You want to see the players. Here are some of the Boys of Summer. Joba!

CC!

Johnny...

Future Hall-of-Famer Mo:

A-Rod and friends:

And finally, the captain, Der-ek Je-ter! Der-ek Je-ter!

A beautiful day, joining with the millions who stayed out of school or called in sick to witness the parade. New York, New York!

From the Game Notes portion of the AP’s recap of tonight’s Yankees victory over Kansas City:

[Johnny] Damon played his 140th game, reaching the plateau for the 14th straight season. The only other major leaguers to play 140 games in at least 14 consecutive seasons are Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Brooks Robinson and Pete Rose…

I know you figured this out immediately because you’re smarter than I am, but I love this crap, so I’m gonna explain it anyway. So imagine the ‘you’ here is dumber than the you there.

Wait a minute, you say? Aaron, Mays, Brooks Robinson, Pete Rose, and… Johnny effing Damon? Where the crap is Cal Ripken Jr.? Where’s Lou Gehrig? Those guys played in two thousand some odd consecutive games each. How does this make sense?

Well, my friends: Gehrig played in more than 140 games (more than 145 games, actually) every year from 1926 through 1938. That’s thirteen straight years. Add in the 126 games he played in 1925, and there’s a 2,130-game streak in there somewhere. Ripken, on the other hand, played in more than 140 games (160 or more each year, actually) every season from 1982 through 1993 (twelve years) and then four more 140+-game season from 1995 through 1998. He just got screwed in the strike year, 1994, when he played in every Orioles game, but there were only 112 of them to play in.

Don’t you just love this crap??

Mark it down, it’s going to be another Babe Ruth. They sent Johnny off just like they sent off Babe Ruth. It’s going to be another big, big mistake. They made the biggest mistake of their lives.
