Lovely new functionality from Absolute radio on the ipod, meaning you're forever saved from tunelessly humming to friends in an attempt to identify what that great track was called. If you hear a song you like on the station, you can now tag it, and buy it next time you sync to itunes. Simples.

Mob films are great because they really aren't about the mob. They are almost always about something else (business, family, class warfare, moral relativity etc). You can always find a parallel to your own life.

One of the great "Mob truisms" is the idea that when you are on top you never see the person that’s gonna “whack” you. It always seems like a surprise, except by the time the films done, not so much. This is true of the business world too. The people you think you are competing with, are almost never the people who will eventually “whack” you.

In the year 2001, I doubt Sony saw Apple coming. They had everything in their favor. The Sony Walkman was the iPod of its time. They literally invented the idea of being able to walk around with “your” music. They owned record labels, film studios and the best TV on the market. All of these elements should have cemented them as THE media player of the future. But it never worked out that way.

For some reason Sony never created the iPod first. For some reason they resisted the move to digital music. For some reason they lost the game to Apple, and a few years later once again to Xbox. Why? They had a history of inventing ground breaking consumer products (Walkman and Trinitron) and already had all the pieces. The integration of music, film, TV, computers and gaming should have been a no brainer for them.

Why? I don’t know for sure. Perhaps they were protecting their stake in the CD printing business, perhaps their R&D departments didn't speak to one another. I’m guessing they just plain missed out on the dominant trend that would define their industry. And the need to connect that, to what people would want if the future could make it.

The hifi was going wifi and they weren’t ready. Soon the family stereo would disappear from the American home and be replaced by a computer could do so much more for the same money. The game console would go social and consumers would stop playing levels and start playing their friends.

Both Apple and Xbox gave consumers exactly what they wanted. A better, cooler, easier experience. They embraced the “ideas” that the future would be made of, “simplicity, customization, connectivity and community”.

If Sony had the vision and perhaps the guts to make what people wanted from the future, Apple and Xbox would not have dethroned them. Seriously, what consumer didn't want thousands of their favorite songs with them at all times, or the ability to play their games in real time with people all over the country. If they had the foresight to organize around the ideas that would dominate the future, they could have owned it.

But the movies teach us that the mob boss gets wacked when he feels most comfortable. How comfortable are you feeling? What trend are you not heeding? What would your consumers choose if the future would deliver it to them?

What IDEA is about to make you irrelevant?

We've allready tested the app for programatic bugs and I'm proud to say that it is quite well polished. After carefull consideration we decided to move up the release date for Movie Buff and we're currently doing our final checks on the questions database (making sure there are no spelling mistakes or incorrect answers). It's all looking good and our testers are happy with the app.

I'm the reigning champion right now with a highscore of 116 (although Ali, who wrote our questions got to 220 once, but that was before we had our internet highscore system up so he has no way to proove it :)    )

A couple of weeks ago, the first iPhone worm appeared, spreading on jailbroken devices with the SSH application installed (vulnerability being the fact that many users haven’t changed the default root password). As far as worms go, this one was quite benign, merely “rickrolling” users; i.e., changing the background image on the device to an image of Rick Astley.

Now, according to early reports of strange activity by Dutch ISP XS4ALL, and later confirmed by Sophos, there’s a new worm in the wild, and this one is far more malicious.

The new worm is called “Duh” or “Ikee.B”, and it uses the exact same vulnerability as the first one. The fix is thus identical – change the root password in the SSH application to something other than the default, which is “alpine”.

Failing to do so might result in very serious consequences. According to Sophos, Ikee.B is “designed to connect to a server in Lithuania and to follow orders from remote hackers.” It can find vulnerable iPhones on a wide range of IP addresses, including IPs in several different countries, for example the Netherlands, Portugal, Australia (Australia

), Austria, and Hungary. Furthermore, it changes the root password on the iPhone to “ohshit” (as discovered by Paul Ducklin, head of technology in Sophos Asia Pacific.)

Users who haven’t jailbroken their iPhone or haven’t installed the SSH application are not affected by this vulnerability.

Fortune Magazine (23 November 2009) named Steve Jobs of Apple, the CEO of the decade.

Steve Jobs’ unveiled his “digital lifestyle” strategy in 2000 when Apple was worth about $5 billion. Now almost a decade later, Apple is worth about $170 billion—slightly more than Google. Apple has revolutionized the markets for music, movies, mobile telephones, as well as computing.

Steve Jobs embodies User-centric leadership in every way:

Customer is #1—Apple’s products satisfy customers. “He may not pay attention to customer research, but he works slavishly to make products customers will buy.” There is intuitiveness to Steve Jobs’ understanding of people and technology. He knows what customers want even if they don’t or can’t articulate it and he designs the technology around the customer. Think iPhone, iPod, and Mac—they are some of the easiest and most customer friendly technologies out there; hence 100,000 applications for the iPhone, 73% of the MP3 player market, and some of the best PCs on the market today.

Innovation is key—Apple is consistently ahead of the curve. Their products are leaders, not follower-copycats. Despite losing the PC wars to Microsoft Windows, the Mac operating system, functionality, and design has been the one setting the standard for ease of use, speed, and security. The iTunes/iPod completely upended the music and movie industry, and the iPhone is the envy of just about every professional and consumer out there who doesn’t yet own one.

Holistic Solutions Delivery—Steve Jobs delivers a comprehensive solution’s architecture for the customer, and it shows with his merging of hardware, software, and service solutions. For example, “over the course of 2001…Apple launched iTunes music software (in January), the Mac OS X operating system (March), the first Apple retail stores (May), and the first iPod (November).” In 2002, Jobs told Time, “We’re the only company that owns the whole widget—the hardware, the software, and the operating system. We take full responsibility for the customer experience.”

Design Genius—The design of Apple’s products are sheer genius. They are sleek, elegant, compact, mobile, yet user-friendly—they are timeless, and pieces such as the G4 Cube have actually been showcased in The Museum of Modern Art and The Digital Design Museum. Even the Apple store in Manhattan with its winding glass staircases and cube entrance is a tourist destination in NYC.

Big Picture, Little Picture—Jobs is a master of balancing the strategic and tactical aspects of product execution. Jobs set the vision, but is also involved in the execution. “He’s involved in details you wouldn’t think a CEO would be involved in.” Apple is his passion and his desire for virtual perfection comes across the spectrum of both product and service from the company.

Mastery of the Message—he rehearses over and over every line he and others utter in public about Apple.” And it’s not only the contents of the message, but also the timing. Jobs knows how to keep a product launch secret until just the right moment. MacWorld, for example, has been used to strategically communicate the launch of new products, and this has kept both Apple fans and competitors closely tuned to these events.

Steve Jobs is a true model of leadership excellence due in no small measure to his relentless pursuit comprehensive product solutions based on innovation, design excellence, and customer service excellence.

Great Jobs!
