Is RSS dead in the age of the stream? Not for me. I still use Google Reader a lot. It's how I keep ahead. And while I still believe RSS won't catch on with the mainstream it's still a very important technology to watch. Emerging services like PubSubHubbub will help RSS will get faster and power new real-time services.

If you use RSS chances are you're a news junkie. One of my favorite complementary services is Instapaper, which allows you to save articles for future reading on any mobile device.

Over the weekend Marco Arment posted a killer update to the code that makes it easy to bookmark any article in Google Reader directly off the desktop and/or mobile version. This works faster and better than other solutions. Not only does this save a news item for future reading but Instapaper will also follow the link to the original source too and cache it. You can learn more here.

Google’s new Send-to feature includes built-in support for Instapaper.

The Instapaper bookmarklet now supports Google Reader natively as well. Simply invoke the Read Later bookmarklet when you have an item in Google Reader selected, and Instapaper will automatically save that item. This even works on Google Reader’s iPhone version.

Podpora Instapaper (ukládání článků pro přečtení později, s odstraněným formátováním pro mobilní čtení) se nyní nachází v nové funkci Send-to v Google Reader. Z Instapaper se tak stává opět daleko mocnější nástroj.

Using the Instapaper bookmarklet on the iPhone in mobile Safari or on any Mac or PC browser, the entire thought process of, "Oh, I'll just bookmark/print/save/email/store this article to read later," may just end up having a happy ending after all (i.e., you read the article later).

Rather than hiding the link somewhere to come back to it later—which, you never will—Instapaper gives you the easiest, fastest bookmarklets I've come across. You click it; it saves, and all of your "I'll read this when I have time" links are stashed away in a single location.

But now, they're accessible from anywhere. Ah yes, it does require an iPhone, however. The Instapaper iPhone app fires up and instantly you're greeted with a list of all those bookmarks you've saved with the best intentions of reading—eventually. Instapaper even downloads the entire web page for you in the background and formats them perfectly for the iPhone's screen.

Needless to say, it's come in handy while waiting for a plane to take off, or an appointment, a meeting, for a child to be born, or just while sitting in traffic.

Kill your boredom with all those articles you meant to read but weren't really going to anyway. Instapaper makes it all seem so easy—because it is.

I took a quick trip uptown today to learn more about Tumblr and meet with their team. (I will have a video interview next week up with Tumblr's co-founder, David Karp.)

While I was there I shot this five-minute interview with Marco Arment, who developed Instapaper as a side project. (Follow him on Twitter @MarcoArment)

If you haven't tried the fantastic Instapaper service, be sure to check it out. Instapaper, which works on many mobile devices, is really for active web readers. It makes it a snap to save articles for future reading. Though we don't have it on video, Marco showed me some of the forthcoming features in Instapaper 2.1 for the iPhone. The new version, which should be out in a few weeks, has stronger integration with Twitter and Tumblr.

Watch this screencast - particularly the part where the New York Times is added as a folder. Note that the app doesn't just pull down the text in the feed but the full text of every article - and then makes it available in a mobile format on your device.

Instapaper Pro for the iPhone got a nice upgrade last night that turns it into a mini feed reader of sorts. The best feature is that it will automatically download the full text of the top articles on Techmeme, not just the links.
