After having nice Thanksgiving and Black Friday, it's time to put up our Christmas decorations.  We spent the morning/early afternoon putting up lights around the house.

Then we took a break to watch the FSU @ UF game.  It was Tim Tebow's final game at the Swamp.  UF won 37-10.

In the evening we put up a Christmas tree in the living room and filled it with ornaments.

My favorite part leading up to Christmas has to be all the holiday lights. It doesn't matter the house or building if it has lights it seems warmer. It must be the comfort that they have the holiday spirit. Don't get me wrong there are levels of greatness. For example, looking at too many houses that where done by professionals. With their strands perfectly sized to match the eves. Every twinkly light perfectly straight. It makes you overly critical when looking at "do-it-yourselfers" homes. You know what I'm talking about; mismatched bulbs, mismatched lengths, randomly placed, extension cords visible. This year I have been seeing more and more where half the lights will be the regular old bulbs paired with LED's. Al Gore wants you to switch to LED's you know. Some stores were even offering a discount on LED's if you gave them your old ones. LED's are twice as expensive too.

Since we are talking about price. Watch out when deciding what strand to buy. I noticed that Walmart had a 400 bulb strand and 200 bulb strand both for $9.98. I was trying to decide which I should get for my front tree. I decided on the 200 bulb strand. MISTAKE. I didn't have enough. So instead of buying another 200 bulb strand. I ended up buying (3) 100 bulb strands at $2.00. If I would have just bought the 400 bulb strand I would have had enough lights for $10 not $16.

TIP: Always go for the bigger, more bulb, strand for the same money. You'll use them.

Even though I felt a little ripped-off, as soon as I was done I was beaming with pride. My wife and kids are happy too. However they did ask if I would put lights on the second story.

"No way!" I'm afraid of heights."

Hoping for sympathy because I admitted my fear. I got...

"scrooge"!

I don't care what they think, when I look at them I feel festive. Warm even.

Over Thanksgiving we went to see family in Benton, MS, via Greenwood. Here are some pics of our time with some dear G'wood friends, the Colemans and Robertsons, and Mrs. Bettye Jim. Wish we could have seen more folks! Anyway, Part 2 (family pics from Benton and Flora, MS) coming soon.

Shoddy and disjointed leftovers from Thanksgiving:

My dad asked me if I wanted to see New Moon. I was so confused. But then again, we used to fight for first dibs on each upcoming Harry Potter book.

It still shocks me to think that all the famous Romantic poets' lifespans are like layers of a Russian doll. Lucky Wordsworth. Poor Keats. On that note, I hunkered down and wrote another essay. Sad thing is it took me the whole frickin day to write. It was one of the laziest yet ultimately productive days I've ever had. As a result, I found a new Keats quote to love: "I will not be dieted with praise." (And he said it with such ferocity too---it's great!).

This morning I got up at seven to go to work. What an awful night of sleep. I dreamt I puked and out of my mouth flew the fattest pigeon I will ever see. Never will I overindulge my tummy past 10pm again.

I feel dirty every time I leave work. It's not easy to be immersed in ten hours of sordidness and come out with one's innocence unscathed. Today I wrote up my first felony... exciting, except it was against a 19-year-old. I also learned that there is such a thing as a felonious kiss. Besides that, I'm still shaking my head at the complicated and utterly boring vehicular case thrown upon me this afternoon. Really, I hate cars and people who steal them. The case took the whole afternoon to prepare, and I could barely understand the broken English of the guy I was interviewing. Frustrating. But at least it wasn't one of those "transit recidivist walks between subway cars" nonsense. Why bother arresting for that? Even judges hate those.

Hoboken. Finally went to Maxwell's for dinner after about a year of abstinence. Went to Grimaldi's, too. I don't think I can ever eat free Spec pizza after this break. It would be like weaning oneself off a macbook and switching back to a PC. Who does that?

I think I just killed a potentially savory moment with my flavorless technology comparison.

Regarding the above appended photo: that is my backyard in autumn. Yet we still feel the need to go super Asian and drive up to Bear Mountain every year. I don't complain, though. Either it's the elevation or just the way I was raised, I really, really like mountains. Oh my god - believe me, that pun was wholly unintended.

I.  Love.  Thanksgiving.  My favourite holiday by a long shot.  Lots of great food, four days off, no pressure with presents (either to think of things I want or to get people things they'll like... Christmas stresses me out).  Anyhoo, here's what's happened on my Thanksgiving, so far:

  • Read "The Road", which was perfect Thanksgiving reading in the sense that it made me realize that shit, I have a lot to be thankful for.  Starting with not having to be somewhere with roving bands of cannibals.
  • Made pie crust!  Kind of.  Also, learned to ask exactly what's available in a kitchen I'll be cooking in, so as to avoid having to peel apples with a knife.  Which is a pain in the ass.
  • Had big Thanksgiving dinner outside house I grew up in for the first time ever (except for college).
  • Had a tennis lesson from my brother, who is an absurdly good teacher.  Fixed my serve with exactly 2 corrections.  WTF?
  • Had dinner (not Thanksgiving dinner :-)) at Penny Lane Pub, one of my absolute favourite spots in Richmond.
  • Set my father's Garmin to Russian so he can "start learning" for when he comes to visit me.  (Hey, now he knows "right" and "left"... it's a start.)
  • Did Black Friday shopping online.  It's the way to go, suckers.
  • Caught a cold.  Bah.
Here are some things that are yet to happen:
  • Hair appointment where I'm going to get yelled at by my hairdresser for being completely incapable of handling a hair dryer like an adult.
  • Dinner at the only acceptable Mexican restaurant in Richmond, after which we'll come home and make nachos and bitch about how horrible the Mexican food is in Richmond.
  • Eat.  More.  Leftovers.
  • Taking lots of drugs.  NyQuil makes it all better.
Hope your Thanksgiving has been at least this good.

I hope you had a lovely Thanksgiving!  We had a delicious meal with an Italian bent, thanks to all of our friends' cooking prowess.  The menu included glazed ham, fresh cranberry sauce, roasted squash, brussel sprouts, asparagus with Frico, vegetable lasagna, and my contributions, sage stuffing and fennel mashed potatoes with rosemary.  After we stuffed our bellies, we sipped on homemade Limoncello while the boys held an impromptu music session, with Adam on the guitar, Greg on the accordion (!), and Anthony spitting some freestyle rhymes.  What a perfect night with great friends, food and conversation!

After much research, I think I decided on the perfect Thanksgiving sides.  The Sage Stuffing is a gourmet and modern update on my all-time favorite... Stovetop.  I made the buttermilk cornbread from scratch, as the recipe details.  But I left out the chicken livers.  Find the recipe form Epicurious here:

Sage Stuffing

Usually my go-to Thanksgiving mashed potatoes are made with roasted garlic.  This holiday, I went with my new obsession, roasted fennel.  These mashed potatoes have so much flavor and richness... you can't go wrong with rosemary, crème fraîche and a stick of butter!  And they can be made ahead and reheated in the microwave for added convenience.

Mashed Potatoes with Roasted Fennel & Rosemary
Ingredients (serves 8-10)

2 large fresh fennel bulbs, trimmed, quartered through core, center core trimmed and discarded, cut into 3/4 inch pieces
1 medium onion, cut into 3/4 inch pieces
3 tblsp extra-virgin olive oil
2 tsp fine sea salt, divided
3 lbs Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and cut into 1 1/2 inch pieces
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
1 1/2 tblsp fresh rosemary, chopped
1/2 cup crème fraîche

1.  Preheat oven to 375°.  Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.  Toss fennel and onion with olive oil, 1 tsp salt, and fresh pepper and spread in a single layer.  Roast until fennel and onion are very tender, tossing occasionally, about 1 hour 15 minutes.  Let cool slightly.  Transfer to a food processor and puree until almost smooth.

2.  Cook potatoes in a large pot of salted water until tender, about 25 minutes.  Drain well, cool slightly.

3.  Melt butter with rosemary and remaining salt in a small sauce pan.  Place potatoes in a large bowl with fennel puree, melted butter and crème fraîche...mash well.  Season with salt and pepper and drizzle with more olive oil. (Can be made 6 hours ahead.  Place in a microwave safe bowl and reheat on high for 4 minutes until heated through).

Thanksgiving hasn't even been gone for 24 hours.  And we're throwing all caution to the wind (wheeee!) and decorating gingerbread men.

They were pre-baked.  From a kit.  Hey, I made the icing!  (From a mix.)  Don't judge.

Oh yeah, some of the cookies were broken, so we ended up with extra feet and hands.  And you know what that means, don't you?

Ho ho ho!  The Christmas Cannibal!

Our kid is going to need so much therapy someday.
